Went to the South Tower Observatory in early November 1997 (Autumn half term in the UK). I was 17 years old. Was in an awkward teenage phase and refused to have any photos taken of me, how I regret that now. I have one photo of the back of my head looking northward towards the Empire State Building. I distinctly remember how small the Statue of Liberty looked from up there and looking at the North Tower thinking how close it looked. Fantastic place and fantastic city, RIP to all those who were lost.

2:25, Philippe Petit's signature. For all those wondering, he's the guy who walked on a tight rope from one tower to the next. There's a recent movie of him and the Towers called 'The Walk'.

You could always tell if someone was new in the office. When the buildings swayed in the wind, they would look at you with a face that said” Is this normal???” They would see us un-phased by it and suddenly get relaxed.

Did anyone else notice the top of the former Duetche Bank Building at the 3:50 mark? Weeks after 9/11/01, they found mold, mildew, and body parts on the roof of the tower, and it eventually had to be torn down.

The South Tower had the observation deck. The North Tower had the Windows on the World restaurant. I found that out when I took an elevator one morning to WOW and asked where the observation deck is. The host said "Walk over to that elevator and push the down button. When it opens, push "G" for ground. Get off and leave the building. Go to the building nearby that looks just like this one--it's hard to miss. Get on the elevator there and push the top button." He probably said that 20x a day.

Thankyou for posting this video. It's great to see the inside of the Towers. I didn't get to go in inside the WTC when we was in New York in 1999. What a site to see in person just from the outside. Too bad we didn't know to go out if to park the car outside of the city and take the path back to the trade center. R.I.P to all those who lost there lifes on 9/11

Jet fuel happens to burn at high temperatures which caused the external steel support beams to buckle. That allowed the floors to collapse. I wish that they would rebuild the towers taller. They really gave the city a dramatic skyline.

This is odd to me personally. It was June 1996 when I saw the WTC for the first and only time. I lived in Chicago at the time and was at the Newark, NJ airport on a plane waiting to take off. I've never been to New York City. The only thing of NYC I've ever seen with my own eyes is the World Trade Center twin towers.

at 4:59 if I'm not mistaken, there are some shots of St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church - which collapsed underneath the weight of the Towers, and the Port Authority won't allow the Greek Orthodox church to rebuild in its "footprint" now. It had been an immigrant-built church, and they say, it served many people who worked in the WTC area.

@hannes0000 With all due respect to the ones that lost their lives in the attacks, I believe the human body and mind responds differently under great stress. Given the options, falling from a high altitude to a quick death vs. burning alive, many chose the former. RIP.

Even though 9/11 is seared into my memory, and was a complete nightmare, sometimes I look at videos of the towers before it happened and think was that really just an awful nightmare and the entire awful time since 9/11 will turn out to be a horrible dream that I can wake up from. It’s a surreal feeling and the whole time since 9/11 has been surreal.

@@TaxingIsThieving I forgot I even typed that. 😅 Let me explain: I thought it was interesting that this was filmed exactly 2 months after I was born. It's interesting to me to see life during a year in which I can't remember and that was my way of expressing that. Sometimes we forget that life didn't just begin the day we were born and that's why it's so fascinating and surreal to watch vintage footage. Life in 1996 & beyond to me is practically ancient. To you though, 1996 was just an ordinary year since you're probably much older.

I'm always wondering, that they don't use the Space in the corners, at least for bigger windows, or even better for 4 super columns for terrorism safety!? The building would look totally the same and i would still be standing! As i was in this building, i though there were actually super colunms in these corner's!
@visionist7
@visionist7 5 жыл бұрын
The corners didn't support the building as the floor trusses crossed from the perimeter walls to the core at right angles. The corners were chamfered-off to make the buildings slightly less bluff against the swaying of the wind, same over the chamfered parapet at the top. The architect didn't want panoramic corner windows as he was scared of heights. Ideally each corner would have housed a redundant, concrete encased staircase for fire egress. Buildings in Israel are designed that way.
