They didn't have claymores, they had landmines. There are plenty of differences between a claymore and a landmine. Claymores are either remotely operated, or by trip-wire. Landmines have a pressure switch that doesn't distinguish between friend and foe.

+jackfrags the KAR98 is indeed a gun from world war 1. Known as the KAR 98 AZ it became a universal carbine for the Germans and was especially popular with the stormtroops. It replaced the older karabiner 88 which was also in use in WW1 but was relegated to rear line troops such as logistics personnel and artillery crews. You were clearly thinking of the KAR98K which was an upgrade used in WW2 by Nazi Germany.

In theory the closest WW1 weapon is the Gol Magnum Sniper. It uses a licensed copy of the Mauser 98. I am suprised people dont know that.

Kar98k doesn't exist in WWI, the Kar is a variant of the Gewehr 98 which was made pre-WWII, it was shorter and I think it was harder to jam.
