What really depresses me about World War 1 especially was the level of UNNECESSARY death due to incompetence of those in command! When General John Monash planned the battle of Hamel one officer later remarked that it was the first time he'd spent more time in the planning room than on the battlefield. Monash deliberately sort to sacrifice as FEW OF HIS MEN AS POSSIBLE. THAT ALONE set him apart from his peers who really didn't care how many died so long as THEY got their decorations. Planes & tanks were used for the FIRST TIME to resupply forward troops. Smoke was used on the day of the battle instead of the gas used on the previous days. THIS gave our troops an advantage NOT WEARING gas masks as these restricted your view of the action around you. The battle went like clockwork running for 90 minutes with ALL objectives ACHIEVED! They had made a scale model of the battlefield & so all knew exactly WHERE they were to be & WHEN! Film of this model survives to this day & is on KZbin. Hamel was such a resounding success that the British & French copied it, but on a much bigger scale & they used it to train their junior officers. So SOME generals WERE worth their rank, thankfully!

The casualties at Le Hamel were c1,200 of which 800 men died mostly Australian. Almost always in battle the wounded outnumber deaths by 3/4/5 to 1.At Hamel that was reversed so Monash’s desire to protect the infantry failed. It was the British artillery that facilitated that remarkable victory which by the way was a Tactical victory not a strategic victory as bestows a Corps commander§±± General-not a full general.

first of France fought against turkey , gallipoli sounds familiar to you ? We even occupied them after , second of all austria took the balkan area , it was french that liberated serbia , Germany mainly fought on the western front since Austria-hungarian were fightng russia , to 1914 to 1916 france fought almost alone because you have to wait 1916 to see britain sending soldiers in mass .

My heart goes to the mothers who also died on these fields of tears, every single day they died again and again, praying that the next would the day of their release.

War is not a game, so stop counting points like you were talking about sports. It's all about death fear and destruction, there ain't nothing to be proud of Further more ; peacefully sitting in our warm and sweet homes from the back of our screens we have absolutly no right to judge who were heroes or cowards.

Funktastic Ed us who have access to the internet will never understand the pain and suffering that the heroes of our nations went through for our individual rights and freedom. There was no good or bad in this war.

The NEVELLE Offensive 1917 debacale was IDENTICAL to Operation Kursk 1943. Both the French President and Adolf Hitler had cold feet about their operation but insisted it go through for 'Political Reasons'. Both counted on 'secret weapons' (French Segalese and German Panther tanks) found wanting. Both had know serious flaws going in (The German Withdrawl to the Hindenberg Line/Russian Reinforcement at Kursk). Both ended in catastrophe the French Army Mutined & it broke the back of the Germans.

...was a french victory? they lost more soldiers than the germans. what about the battle of the somme? more british soldiers fought there than french. The German army had fought its way into a good defensive position inside France and had permanently incapacitated 230,000 more French and British troops than it had lost itself. Despite this, communications problems and questionable command decisions cost Germany the chance of early victory.

jana1612 The Somme offensive was originally supposed to be mostly French, but the German offensive in Verdun occupied most of the French army. We could all cherry pick a battle that was mostly one army and say “see? They’re a minority in this battle so they were less common in the whole war”. I could do that with Verdun! How many British fought at Verdun? Next to none! Hundreds of thousands of French fought at the Somme, with millions more at Verdun while the British had no one at Verdun. Your point is completely futile. And seeing as Verdun was not only a more horrible battle (with higher casualties in %) than the Somme, but also a far more important one, I would say the French were far more active in 1916 than the British were. Also, Germany did take more casualties in numbers than the French, not in % though. Some may point out the battle of the Marne in 1914 as a point why the French needed the British. However, the battle of the Marne had FAR more French soldiers fighting than the British. The victory at the Marne belonged to the French, not the British (although the British aid was very helpful). Had Britain not joined the war, it is likely France would have fallen by late 1914 or 1915, but certainly not at the Marne. Not to undermine the efforts of the British during the war at all, as they did play a huge role throughout, but to say that the French were the inferior army on the Western front is just plain false.

I read the problem was they were planning on using trains to have sort of blitzkrieg into France. But their were problems with the trains, tracks sizes, can't remeber. But the train plan didn't work out as planned.

austria was weak after loosing huge numbers in the east trying to invade serbia...turkey fought in the east against russia, where did they fight france? romania and italy also fought germany and austria. and france had the help of the british forces from the beginning of the war onwards, plus germany fought a two frontiers war against russia and france+britain, so where was france almost fighting 2 years on its own? thats bullshit
