WORLD WAR II VENEREAL DISEASE PREVENTION & SCARE FILM "PICK UP" SYPHILLIS 53594 (PRINT 1)

Pick-up (TF 8-2060) is an official War Department training film from 1944 that informs World War II servicemen about the dangers of sexually transmitted infections and the need to protect themselves from contracting a possible STI, as well as what to do to treat it and what happens if you don’t treat the infection. The film focuses on the symptoms of gonorrhea and syphilis as it covers proper courses of treatment. The film opens with a shot of an Air Force base where a soldier, Corporal John Greene, runs out of a building to talk to a friend who is working on building a sidewalk. Later, getting ready to take his leave, Greene walks into a train station (02:30) and goes to the ticket desk to pick up his ticket. He meets a girl named Anne, and he checks her luggage for her at the left luggage desk. The two go to a club, where people dance (05:10); John and Anne sit at a table and chat over a few beers. They dance while the band plays, drinking and having a merry time. Greene sits at the bar while Anne goes to the women’s room (08:28), and he has an internal conversation about whether or not to sleep with her. They sit on a park bench at night (10:45), and Greene pressures Anne into kissing him. Later, Greene walks into his barracks to go to bed (13:08), where his friend advises him to take an antibiotic to treat any possible STI. A montage of shots shows the days going by as Greene cleans his rifle and trains with his unit. In the men’s bathroom of Greene’s barracks (15:35), Greene looks sick and tells his friend he has a “dose.” At the base’s dispensary, Greene finds out he has gonorrhea (17:15). The captain at the dispensary tells Greene that he’ll give him a dose to treat the infection, but that Greene’s furlough is off the table. The captain tells Greene he may have syphilis as well. The patients in the base’s hospital stand at attention for inspection by the doctor (20:34). The doctor notifies Greene that he doesn’t have syphilis. Greene walks into the captain’s office at the dispensary (21:47), and the captain talks to Greene and a few other men about the importance of protecting themselves. The captain shows the men a microscope with a slide of the gonorrhea virus (22:51) and the syphilis virus-Treponema pallidum-with its spirochetes shape (26:58). The captain uses a poster of the prostate and male reproductive organs to show the men how gonorrhea causes permanent damage (24:33). The film then shows a man presenting a sore on his penis caused by syphilis (27:45); the film also shows the infection spreading to the back in the form of lesions. A man talks to a syphilis patient who is starting to lose his mind (29:03). A man with syphilis walks down a city sidewalk using two canes to support his weakened state from having the infection (29:40). The film shows two newborns born with syphilis (30:21), then it shows a shot of two soldiers walking into a U.S. Army Prophylactic Station (31:22). Greene walks out of the Station Hospital Administration Building (32:30). He asks his captain for another furlough (33:24), but he is told that his unit will be moving out for combat. Greene talks to his mother on a payphone (34:05) to inform her he is heading for war. In the barracks, men pack their things (35:05). The soldiers march in uniform, with their gear, and board an ocean liner (35:50) to take them overseas to the fighting. The film closes with an aerial shot of transport ships at sea.

When I was a kid in the 1970s, the dreaded "VD" was every teenager's worst nightmare. Just 10 years later, anyone who was worried they might have an STD -- and then discovered it was gonorrhea or crabs or something like that -- was jumping for joy. That's how much everyone feared HIV and AIDS.

I remember when they weren’t sure if kissing could pass HIV. Some guy started kissing me, like without my permission, at the underage dance club in my town. I was 15 and thought, “Wow, I probably have AIDS”. (HIV wasn’t even in the vernacular then. You got AIDS and died)

@@konjurekatrina That's right -- it was a scary time. In 1982, I moved to Greenwich Village -- ground zero for the epidemic along with parts of San Francisco. I'm straight, but early on, everyone was fearful about getting it since no one was sure how much contact was needed. I had gay friends who swore off any kind of intimate contact for years. I also had friends who threw caution to the wind and, unfortunately, ended up dead within 2 years. It was merciless in the 1980s. You're right -- if you got AIDS, it was pretty much a death sentence back then.

It's true that for most people, thanks to the antiretroviral drugs, HIV has become more like a chronic condition like diabetes with an almost normal expected life span. But it's still no joke. People can and do get AIDS and die, even with the medication. And those other STDs are no less harmful now than they were years ago. Better treatments, sure, but still not something you want to get.

When I was a Drill Sargent we showed movies something like this and I had a girl ask a question while the film was still going on;" How'd she get it on her mouth?' 🤔 I told her she'd find out by watching the film as I stopped the others in the class from laughing. It really isn't a laughing matter. Look at what happened to ganster Al Capone, at the end he was 'fishing' in his huge swimming pool. He was scared to death being in that prison in Philly, claimed men he'd murdered were visiting him in his cell. Some of that may have been the disease messing with his brain but I tend to believe some of the hauntings were real.

During BMT in the 60s the trainees were shown a film warning of the dangers of VD. One of the rumors was there was a strain of syphilis that if you contacted it you would be sent to an island for isolation for life. In the 60s basic pay for an enlisted was $87 per month.

There’s a definite undertone of “Fast Talking High Trousers” running through all of it. It’s just so damn charming, like an Abbot and Costello short or a Three Stooges Act. Kind of funny how night and day modern training videos are by comparison where they scare you straight through the film but since it's all volunteer now (and a paid job), the threat of getting fired from the military holds a lot more water. I was in the Army for 26 years, seven as a Drill Sargent. I didn't do the yelling 'thing' unless I really had too. No one ever quit, got hurt or went AWOL in all that time. I treated my 'troopies' the way I wanted to be treated. Were there some 'knockle heads'? Sure, but they came around. In the begining half of the room had leadership duties, then half way through basic the other side had leadership duties BUT they knew who was in charge, there's a fine line betwwen being a 'friend' and being in charge. @@staralioflundnv Well, scare tactics don't work. Our choice of medications has improved greatly. Ancient Penicillin G is still the mainstay of syphilis therapy, although Azithromycin is a much more humane drug. We use a lot of doxycycline/tetracycline for chlamydial urethritis. And there is it issue of drug resistance. But generally speaking, once you start dripping, you become very humble, very quickly.

I saw this film in 1966 as a junior in high school, which was shown in the school's auditorium with multiple groups of students. It was indeed a "scare film" to discourage kids from getting too carried away on dates. Upon exiting the auditorium, I distinctly recall one girl (who I had an enormous crush on) remarking to her friend "Did you see that chancre? Ugh!" So the film did have its intended effect, at least on her.

Went to Vietnam in Febuary 68, as a Marine. May as well been on the planet Mars. Those first few week in-country you would believe anything some old in-country veteran would tell you. The legend of the “black-syph was the first I one heard. It was a ultra strong strain of syphilis. They would send you to island of the coast of Vietnam to wither and die. Your parents would be sent a telegram notifying them that you were declared missing-action…….What a freaking crock! Took you about a week or two figure it was a bunch of bull. In the early 90's in the Marine Corps I kinda took it upon myself to talk to all the new guys coming in about what NOBODY talked about, but what everyone, never the less, knew about. I told him, lucky for you BAS is right across the street and nobody else in the unit even has to know. (They enacted that policy in the hopes that more Marines would seek treatment) I told him to go get his "bore punched". A term usually reserved for swabbing the inside of your rifle barrel after qualifying on the range. Although this had a different meaning, it was done the exact same way. Ten minutes later we heard him scream from across the street. And of coarse, when he came limping back to the barracks, a bunch of us stood outside holding up numbers from 1 to 10 on how loud he was and proceeded to give him a standing ovation !!! Poor guy. He didn't go anywhere near it ever again. He was so affected that he actually got in trouble for doing the 5 knuckle shuffle waaaay too often. Good times. Poor bastard.....
