its very sad knowing that in only a few more years, there will be no more WWII veterans to talk to

Indeed. 10 years tops I feel. We recently lost the last Medal of Honor recipient for that war. Only like two pilots of the Tuskegee Airmen are still too. I got to meet a few of them when I was in my early teens.

@JTMaster
@JTMaster 8 ай бұрын
@@Fernandaperez233 There are only around 100,000 WWII veterans still alive in the U.S. out of the 16 million that served. Even adding in veterans of other countries, it probably doesn't even reach a million in total. Most of the Russian or Ukrainian veterans are dead due to much lower life expectancies there during the Soviet era.

My great grandfather was there, fighting in the British army. He passed away in 1993 when I was a teenager. Sadly he came back and inflicted a lot of his trauma out on the next few generations. They had no outlet or understanding on how to process what they experienced.

@@BC.28 yeah I feel ya. My grandfather was from Tennessee, came to Washington State for the Navy right after pearl harbor when he was 19. Met my grandmother who was divorced with a kid, and had 3 kids with her (my mom included) before he split and had two more with his second wife. My mom didn't know her dad until I was born in the 80s. Have nothing but positive memories of him, and I know I wouldn't be here without him enlisting, but there's still trauma there for my mom and her brothers

At the time of the Dunkirk evacuations , those two were in their teens , and their families anxious about a world that seemed to be rushing headlong towards the abyss . At that time , there may well have been veterans still alive who fought in the first and second battles of Bull Run . The world is safe now from the tyrants who tried to enslave it some eighty years ago , thanks to the young people who would give their lives in order to keep us free , like those two gentlemen there . But the world has it's new tyrants , madmen like the current dictator of Russia , whose fantasies of conquest and of mass murder are even more dangerous than those of the mass murderers who these two heroes fought against . Tribalism and bigotry must be banished from our way of thinking and of teaching our youngest members of society . If we cannot eliminate hate , then it is entirely possible that we won't survive our technological adolescence . But if we do survive , then our high flown plans to cure cancer and to expand into space and to visit other worlds in the remote future will be a reality .
