I love how this movie introduces the zombies themselves, or maybe I should just call them the infected; there's no dramatic camera shot on one of them with a musical sting to kick things off. It just has a news announcement about a rabies infection, and then once we see the shots of the crowd running in a panic, the infected just show up, merging with the crowd. It's a different way of starting things off.

I’ve never watched this movie before but this scene is genuinely one of the most frightening things I’ve seen that has come out of the zombie media. The fact that (I’m pretty sure) the zombies are still humans infected with the 28 days later-like virus is scary. The infected still being alive but being controlled is a brilliant idea for zombie movies and that the zombies will literally do ANYTHING THEY CAN just to infect the victims, even if it puts them in danger is TERRIFYING. Just by looking at the opening alone I can tell this is a brilliant movie.

The Beginning Of Knowledge The walking dead would be easy, normal running would be extra terrifying but quick decision making is all that's required, though it would be tough. The best idea for finding a place to live I can think of is either a random place in wide open country area where hunting is possible and weather is always changing, because now that I think about it, zombies in this movie couldn't survive winter or if they were actually zombies I'm positive a majority would be frozen solid or slowed greatly. I say changing weather because growing food like fruits, vegitibles, seeds, nuts, and being able hunt would be necessary. You'd also have to have reserves of frozen food so a generator would be necessary. Shit besides that, I could probably live where I do now with some few upgrades and I would be fine, bar the outside glass doors, bar the windows, make a fence boarder around the house capable of keeping anything out with a gate in the front, collect reserves of gas early on. Weapons are already good to go.

I love the fact that we don't see the start of the explosion only the middle and end, I love it for two reasons. 1. He doesn't see it either, we get to feel the exact kind of terror he's feeling, we get to empathise, and 2. I'm reading the book, currently. Imagine how much better this movie could have been if they hadn't turned it into an action movie with ultra-fast zombies. The movie could have followed the book more and been just as good if not better, going through people's stories they tell in the aftermath through flashbacks, making you care about each new character in their various struggles around the world, slowly showing the initial spread, panic, and push back. This movie does little to show the sheer dread that was written in the book, as well as moments like in Yonkers where the U.S military tried to make a stand and was overrun due to leadership incomptence, or in Ukraine where they drop nerve gas on thousands of refugees fleeing a burning Kiev to lessen the infection spreading, only to have a few dead get up again and the survivors having to fight them off. Instead, we got copy-pasted zombies from I Am Legend doing the Naruto run and Brad Pitt with plot armor playing a scientist who conveniently is also smart, strong, knows how to fight, and use guns.

There are a couple reasons I can think of that they deviated so heavily from the source material (so much so as to make it similar in name and small details only, in my opinion), but the most likely is that it's a two-hour film, and there are constraints that come with that. It's standard practice to have a narrative through-line for audiences to identify with and easily latch onto. Brooks' "interviews" are perfectly segmented, and though some lead into one another, none are completely connected. It's harder for a movie audience to get invested in multiple characters, multiple stories, without that connection -- especially as many as Brooks wrote for. You could have Krygyzstan, the border traffickers and the Canadian regiment, _or_ you could have the Battle of Yonkers, _or_ you could have Ukraine and the Holy Russian Empire -- but you can't have all of them within the constraints of a 2-hour film without someone who seriously, _seriously_ knows how to parse through what to keep and what to discard and how to weave it all together. The through-line _could_ have been the interviewer, I suppose, but in a way that defeats Brooks' express purpose of having the stories be the centerpiece rather than one singular person. This movie did that anyways with Brad Pitt's character, but I digress. Broad appeal, a presented-as-everyday-but-way-too-skilled and relatable hero to root for, a straightforward plot. That's what would sell, and it did. Brooks' "World War Z" is the kind of story that, if it's to be adapted faithfully, needs to be made for TV. Honestly, it's gift-wrapped for it.

I love how this scene builds. The family are not main characters throwing themselves into middle of action, but survivors scrambling as best they can to get out of a sudden, overwhelming, terrifying event. Also really like how they discover the infection rate by accident, just because someone stepped on a children’s toy. It was an adaptation of a book, and the movie was basically the exact opposite of the book it's based on. In the WWZ book, the zombies are more like The Walking Dead, and it doesn't simultaneously start everywhere. It starts in China and spreads through the black market and organ trade/donations, unknowingly spreading it worldwide. Also, the military is incompetent as hell at first, but they managed to get their shit together and wage a brutal war for a decade, and even then, zombies still exist and pop up every now and again. In the movie, it's basically just like any other zombie movie, only with fast zombies.

It was great when this filmed here in Glasgow. I have a funny story involving my friend Neelum who was an extra. I worked as a runner on the shoot and everyone involved signed an NDA. My pal Neelum (girl with glasses beside white hat at 4:46) didn’t obey this all the time however so one time when we were out of set at the coffee place in Buchanan Galleries she was talking about certain scenes in public and luckily I had some silver tape in my backpack as I was required to have some for sticking down cables etc so I taped over Neelum’s mouth with said tape mission impossible style so she wouldn’t reveal anything to listening ears!

I agree with everyone that this is a thrilling scene. But it also has some logic/continuity issues as does the whole film. Then I'll mention some other cons outside of this scene. Here's my breakdown: Pros: 1. It does a very good job at capturing chaos. My favorite moment is a 3:26, where you can see a "new Zombie" standing up. At this point, the zombies are the minority, but it doesn't stay that way. 2. The motions, particularly the jumping, are interesting. I like how targeted they are (such as the woman coming through the windshield). 3. The dancelike motions of the 12 second process are also striking. 4. If you pay attention to the overhead shots, you can see bodies jumping on other bodies. That's a nice detail. 5. It captures the speed of spread very well and the futility of trying to distinguish between zombies and humans and to shoot the zombies down. Cons: 1. Was it actually a smart decision to drive down the road cleared by the truck? It seems from the scene that the truck ends up in the city square area, precisely where the horde of zombies is gathering and expanding (and they seem to be coming from the other direction, toward the square). So, Gerry arguably drove his family toward danger, not to mention losing his car. I can see if you wanted to say that the RV was better positioned to go down a different road, but this is unclear. 2. The truck striking the police officer strikes me as a cheap trick looking for a jump scare. Anyone could tell from that scene that the truck comes completely out of nowhere. We see no truck at all and then half a second later it strikes the cop. This is a continuity problem. Also, why would a police officer who is apparently in a rush feel the need to tell one person to stay in his car? This desire for a cool shot over something that makes sense is a continuing problem in the movie. The movie tries to go to great lengths to figure out a way it would make sense for people to build a wall around Jerusalem. It seems to me like the director had a cool shot he wanted to make (climbing over the high wall), even if it makes barely any sense that they could have built a wall that high that quickly. Indeed, the building of the wall would have been noticed at least on the news; people would ask why; they would find out it was based on some 10th man theory that zombies are actually real. Gerry would not have needed to go to Korea to find out about the wall around Jerusalem because he would have heard about it on the news as something extremely strange going on in Israel. 3. Is it me or do some of the zombies appear to be biting people and drawing squirting blood through clothing? Even if the zombies have greatly enhanced bite strength, why would the blood spurt out from underneath clothes? Indeed, you'd think more people would be wearing body armor - not in this scene, but later, once biting is recognized as the method of transmission. 4. Gerry seems to have extraordinary luck driving the RV out of traffic and out of the city, when the whole city is jammed. He also has extraordinary luck in not running anyone over, despite people running in that direction. I guess the pedestrians cleared a path for him. Here are some other cons: 1. After this scene, the daughter Rachel has an asthma attack and they need to go to a pharmacy. Gerry speaks with Thierry, who says that they "barely made it out" (of New York City). So of course the logical decision is to go to a pharmacy right in the middle of NEWARK, NEW JERSEY??!! It's part of the NYC metro area. Why on earth would you go there and not go off into some country town in Pennsylvania? There are pharmacies everywhere. I think we know the answer: because they wanted to have cool shots in urban apartment buildings, etc. But this decision makes no sense, and suggests that Gerry is indeed quite good at putting his family into danger. 2. Later, on the ship, Thierry says that "the big cities are the worst off, the airlines were the perfect delivery system." Given the characteristics of this virus, does it really make sense that airlines would all deliver a virus to all the major cities (not just in the US) at virtually exactly the same time? We know what happens when this virus gets on a plane. So it just so happened that hundreds of planes at the same time were carrying this virus, and that, I guess, the pilots landed anyway without any problem? And indeed it all seems to happen simultaneously. In the car in this scene, the radio announces an outbreak of "rabies." Rabies has quite different characteristics! And so none of the news channels on the radio were mentioning this simultaneously occurring worldwide catastrophic event? I suppose if Philadelphia were the very first city affected in the world, you could justify that, but it seems implausible that, once one city reported this incident, all other major cities would then allow in planes carrying the virus. I've never understood how the simultaneous worldwide transmission was supposed to occur. (And if it was not occurring simultaneously, it would have been noticed on the news a bit earlier. For example, in Jerusalem it was mentioned that people in India were fighting the "undead" for a while. This would have been noticeable!) It would have been nice if they had tried to explain this a little more. The only ghost of an explanation occurs in the Korea scene, where it was suggested that it took initial cases 5 to 10 minutes to turn, as opposed to 12 seconds. But still, 5 to 10 minutes is not long. Maybe if there were asymptomatic carriers the airplane theory would make sense or if the very first cases in fact took hours to turn, you could find an explanation. 3. I don't understand why sound wasn't used as a lure more often. In the WHO lab scene, all you had to do really was open a door on the other side of the building leading outside or to some other structure, blast a loud song on repeat from a car or radio, and draw them all out at once, clearing the building. People would have found ways to use sound to their advantage sooner. 4. There's another sense-making problem in the Jerusalem scene: the fact that the city is allowing people in from outside the city. It's a nice gesture, but look at the infrastructure: it's basically cars coming through a long narrow cage. Now, suppose not a single zombie can penetrate that cage from above. The "cage highway," as it were, must have some ENTRANCE somewhere. How could you prevent that cage from being overtaken at the entrance? Also, if the airlines were the perfect delivery system, why would Jerusalem allow ANY planes AT ALL to land at its airport? I definitely enjoy aspects of this movie, but it could have used some care and revision to make a little bit more logical sense.
