World Wide Web Turns 25: Inteview with inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee

The inventor of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, marks the 25th anniversary of his invention, saying that the web gives people "power". But he has called for a global digital "bill of rights" similar to the Magna Carta to protect internet users as the medium he created prepares to mark its 25th anniversary. Sir Tim Berners-Lee called on the world to take a stand against surveillance on the web - and suggested that its independence should be treated as a human rights issue. He said people who use the web should be able to use it to communicate without being blocked or feeling that somebody is "looking over our shoulder. The people of the world have to be constantly looking out for it - constantly making sure, through action, protest, that it doesn't happen," he said. Sir Tim added that he is very proud of the "spirit of international collaboration" that the web has encouraged. Report by Tom Ellis.

There's a famous old movie about it being a Mad Mad World, and I think of this W-sequence when I see that plot focus on the giant 'W' formed by the palm trees (spoiler!). Those were indeed crazy times, and I'm quite relieved to know that things turned out a lot better than many people feared, because of people like Tim Berners-Lee. ...and any celebration of the creation of the World Wide Web would be incomplete without giving a shoutout to the followers as well like Marc Andreessen who played a huge part in breathing life into TimBL's creation.

When asked to describe what distinguished him from his challenger for the Democratic presidential nomination, Senator Bill Bradley of New Jersey, Gore replied (in part): During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system. Although Vice-President Gore's phrasing might have been a bit clumsy (and perhaps self-serving), he was not claiming that he "invented" the Internet in the sense of having designed or implemented it, but rather that he was responsible, in an economic and legislative sense, for fostering the development the technology that we now know as the Internet. To claim that Gore was seriously trying to take credit for the "invention" of the Internet is, frankly, just silly political posturing that arose out of a close presidential campaign. Gore never used the word "invent," and the words "create" and "invent" have distinctly different meanings: the former is used in the sense of "to bring about" or "to bring into existence" while the latter is generally used to signify the first instance of someone's thinking up or implementing an idea."

***** It's hard to make humour about it because most comments on Al Gore have a strong political bias. Usually it's humour with some anti-climate-change theory, right wing, get of my property bias. I'll admitt though, that such circumstances are perfect for true trolls with no bias but trolling humour.
