Top 10 Reasons NOT to Move to Texas.
Do you want to hear why Texas might Not be for you?
Welcome to the world according to Briggs and a video about Texas. Back in 2017, we did a video about 10 reasons not to move to the lone star state. It is time to take another look. Texas is one of the most moved to states in the country and has been for some time. This has led to the state sort of changing. Texas has jobs, it is relatively safe, and until recently it has been considered affordable. Knowing that it should be no surprise the state is a hot spot for people looking for a better life.
If you are thinking about moving to Texas, this video is for you.
Before we get going let me say this. These videos are just listing things you should know before you move there. I’m not telling you not to move to the state even though the title is reasons NOT to move there. It is just a title that sounds good and gets the point across. I mean it is better than “10 things you should know about, consider, and discuss with your family before relocating to Texas.”
Some of the things can be reasons to move to video as well. Let hot weather, some hate it, some love it. I’m just putting these things out so you know.
What to know before moving to Texas and living in Texas.

One thing about the locals I got a kick out of: I was born in Texas but my family moved when I was 3 and we never lived in Texas again. Nevertheless when I was in my 50s and took a job briefly in Dallas a few years ago, and I told "the locals" I was born in Texas, as far as they were concerned I was a bona fide Texas native and I was OK in their book.

Yeah, I've been here since 1987 and I was always a "Damn Yankee" for those first few years, no matter what good things I did for people and my area. That changed after I joined the National Guard and served TEXAS better than most native-born Texans did, including getting activated and serving in Desert Storm. I did more in service to the nation and Texas than most of them. Shut them right up.

Number 8 kept us from moving there. In Harris county (Houston) the rate is 2% or higher in most of the country. I looked at a small ranch, 5 acres, that the property tax was over $1200 a month. The exclusion is if you qualify for an agriculture exemption, but that requires 6+ acres and must be "for profit" use to qualify. So a cow and a few chickens on a 20 acre spread won't cut it.

What has ruined the WHOLE COUNTRY is Neo-Classical Keynesian Economics and the Artificial Interest rates and the fraudulent banking, the INFLATION all the time with these so called "stimulus" created from THIN AIR. People buying houses with NOTHING DOWN and borrowing money that does not even exist and RUNAWAY OVER population. It sure would be GOOD if we did NOT have so much QUANTITY and had more QUALITY. I’ll admit that I’m considering moving to Texas. But when I see the amount of people moving there, I’ve been wondering how much longer Texas will be great. Because as he mentioned in this video, the more people that move there, the more resources the state and local governments have to provide, and will therefore increase the cost in housing and more taxes. Not to mention the more traffic that will clog up the roads and highways in a place where public transportation isn’t so readily available. Maybe I’ll still decide on Texas, but I’m still keeping my options open for other states.
@thullraven1

I live in the DFW Area. let me shed some light for you. This video was SPOT ON with a couple of minor explanations to add. Medical Care is fine in the large metropolitan areas and is accessible. I have three hospitals near me and lots of MDs, Dentists, and Specialists nearby as well. I never had a problem getting treated. Traffic is bad in the major cities, but suburbs aren't too bad except at peak times. Like he said, Property Taxes are high. However, there are exemptions that you can get as a homeowner that can lower them. Just do your research. Check out tax records on places you are thinking about buying so you can get an idea.

I have THREE hospitals nearby, an Urgent Care Clinic down the street from me and another one nearby. Various MDs, Specialists, and Dentists are very close as well. The Property Taxes are bad, but you can get exemptions that help lower them if you qualify. I have a Homestead Exemption and Disabled Veteran Exemption. It helps. The heat is wonderful. I love heat. I don't miss shoveling snow. I'm originally from NJ, and I hate Winter. I own my home and am in an HOA community. I have a pool that I can use that I don't have to take care of. In Fort Worth, I've been here since 2009 and I'm still not used to it being 100 degrees during the day and have it still be around 90 degrees at night! Unfortunatly, the leaders of Texas only want to hold onto power, and they do it so desperately they are willing to go against those things. Most Texand are independent now because we feel we don't have a party anymore. Apologies to anyone who takes offense, it wasn't meant.

As someone who is libertarian-leaning, but registered as a Republican, I 100% agree. The government in general is authoritarian and wants to control the people. If your income tax is low, your sales tax and/or property tax will be high. The least restrictive state in the nation is Alaska, where there is no sales tax and no income tax along with a very low property tax. You also get paid $2000/year as an Alaskan citizen due to the oil industry there. I wish that people would gets their heads out of their asses (especially the Democrats) and start voting for people that will actually benefit you in the end.

The power grid failure was due to a once in a lifetime cold freeze that settled in for an extended time. The grid has been upgraded to handle it. This was the first time ever that it failed. Now about that grid. Texas is the only state that does not rely on the US for it's grid. More US regulations and such are BS and always have been. Texas owns it's grid and therefore if push came to shove and left the union, they can do it easily.

Last February is what I consider an extreme weather event, as it not only snowed in south Dallas, but all the way down to Houston. Minnesota-type winters is not expected weather. During this event, the overnight low was the third lowest low on DFW record, and the first since the 1940s. San Antonio not quite that bad but there’s traffic everywhere. Love San Antonio but way too big for me.

Some good points here Briggs...and I wish I didn't agree with some of them, as a Texas resident most of the past 25 years (ditched the New England winters). Been thinking of selling my place and moving more to the "country" and getting some more land as well. Only a thought so far. Might happen before I retire in 10 years. I'm surprised at how fast Austin is growing....much faster than Dallas was when I moved here. No regrets of course, No way could I have bought this place in Boston.

Texan, born here almost 74 years ago, love the never-boring weather (except August). Some newcomers may never get used to the heat, which is getting hotter and beginning to get to me. We have not always been Republican, were long dyed in the wool Democrat and still have Democrats hanging in here. Mostly city slickers. And I have been accosted on the street by devoted Republican conservatives spouting Q conspiracies. I no longer consider political discussions with strangers necessarily safe. But we are working on it; making all the wrong political headlines but working on it. Guns have always been ubiquitous here. Phones are typically inundated with "we buy houses" calls, often foreign investor robocalls, which the state is finally trying to curb. If buying, watch out for scams. Welcome home!

I agree with most of the things you said because sometimes when we lived in Austin we sometimes got stuck in traffic. We did live there a couple of years from February 2018 to August 2020. And we also see that housing prices are climbing too and some other stuff. We liked living there, but there were some drawbacks like every other place we lived.

Austin has indeed been plagued by horrible traffic delays but years later, it's improving. It may take a few more years to get a lot better but the problems seen in Austin are not applicable to the rest of the state. There are a lot of amazing communities here who enjoy good traffic flow, good schools, safe streets, and friendly people. All with home that aren't overpriced and even land people can buy to build a wonderful home on a larger parcel (and in many cases, no HOA).

Moved from California to just north of Austin late 2020 and agree about the weather and property taxes, although the prop taxes is sorta moot because we saved so much due to much cheaper property. The traffic thing doesn’t bother because, well, California. Weather isn’t a huge bother either (except a massive 100 year ice storm) because we haven’t experienced a drought and fire season. I don’t miss the Santa Ana winds. Haven’t had any hassle from locals either regarding being ‘Californians.’

I moved from the SoCal desert(not a coastal person by any means) to NM back in 2012. Relatively calm and still somewhat affordable in most parts. Only things that seem to scare people away from moving to NM and skipping to either TX or CO are the lack of jobs and high crime rates in some spots. I intend to stay out here and roll with the punches as opposed to jump on the money chasing bandwagon and head to TX or CO. Nice scenery out here and quiet. Texas, I've been through most of it over the years. But it just never appealed to me despite relatives and some friends trying to goad me into heading there.

I even went to Magic Mountain 5 times last year because I love theme parks. Haha There are a lot of conservative Californians that have been broken down by the terrible Marxist policies of Sacramento. In the 15 days, we have been “snow birding” here, we can agree with a lot of this. I would add their infrastructure is really behind. There is a lot of highway construction going on, but side streets are a mess. GPS/navigation is questionable much of the time also. Hwy & frontage roads share the same name which gets confusing when your on a 3 lane frontage road to Hwy 281 and the GPS says go north, but your traveling south, the left lane merges onto north, the far right goes straight and the middle goes to a different hwy. GPS forgot to tell you to take the loop which is off the middle lane just pass the left side merge. Plus there are no signs. Another issue is though octane ratings seem the same, one’s gas mileage drops by 2 miles per gallon.

Been living in Texas for roughly a decade and here's what I can say: - each year, people are getting less and less competent on the road. Road rage rate has increased. You also get crazy Nissan drivers with fake registration or lifted pickup truck tailgating you. Tolls are everywhere, so be prepared and plan your routes. Have a Tolltag/Txtag/Eztag ready just in case. - buying a property and tax has changed dramatically over the past 10 years for the worse. Even when someone who's making low 6 figures, we can't afford to buy a home and maybe not even a condo anymore. - mental healthcare is very difficult to access even with the best health insurance you have. A lot of them are expensive and isn't really covered by the insurance. You got have it rely on your work benefits to get far. - Utilities play a big monopoly here. If you are not happy of the rates and service, too bad, you're stuck with them. We also have our own independent power grid, so when there's a winter storm, pray it doesn't fail. Politically, we didn't even bother to upgrade the grid. - Majority of the population are devoted Christian for the most part of Texas. So you'll expect to see a rate of 1 church per block. I've also spotted several Chinese and Korean churches in Dallas. I personally have zero issues with that but some people might find it off putting. - The weather here sucks. And we expect it to get hotter next year. 100°F (37.8°C) is very normal here. Also if you value your car, be sure to be protected by hail or have covered parking.

I can remember the early 80’s all the people moving to Texas from the north and northeast. It wasn’t so much California at the time. I remember all the bumper stickers on the locals cars and trucks, welcome to Texas, now leave. Or, go home yankee. I know people in Texas personally who have lived there all their life and I still communicate with them, the biggest complaint. Those who are coming in by the droves, are not leaving what they left behind! Once they destroyed Texas, there’s no place to hide anymore.

So, I'll just say he's right on about traffic. "Rush hour" is starting to mean nothing. Freeways are ALWAYS crowded. He also does not lie about housing prices. I know of quite a few people who sold their houses in California, paid cash for a comparable house here, and had money left over. Houses here were 1/3 of California houses.
