You touched on it briefly, the vulnerabilities of cities when change happens - harbours silt up, rivers change, resources run out, tourists can't or won't come, trade stops. Cities can be very powerful, but very vulnerable as well.

a video talking about different fortifications in various towns and cities would be very helpful, especially if you're able to link it to how fortifications may change with reagrds to different settings, such as a High vs Low fantasy setting, or a sci-fi setting where orbital bombardment is not a possibility compared to where it is.
@@Tyneras I'd say primarily hand-fired archery when low enough, but magic, or magitek, Balista is a good bet for higher targets. Use whatever is attacking for a rulebase of what your city could use to build defenses. E.g. Maybe those magic stones holding the airship up could also be supercharged to make a boulder-throwing rail gun or something?

Very interesting breakdown. I'm intrigued about modern cities now, like the kind springing up across China every year. I lived in one such for the past five years: thirty years ago it was a small market town. Then the government foreclosed on the leases of the surrounding farmland, giving huge amounts of money to poor farmers, and built a modern city on that spot. Now it has a million people, and manufactures a ton of hardware for export - more than other cities many times its size. The interesting point is that it followed the pattern of boom town but with no natural resources. In this case, I'd say the resource was government money.

Pretty cool, I'm studying the development of ancient cities right now. I'm reading two books on it. I like that you leave room for variations in cities. A lot of the videos I've seen on this subject have this idea of an ideal city type that all cities, across the entire world and all time periods, must adhere to. Overall great video, easily one of your best. Great to see you having confidence in your knowledge. It's very helpful. And I'd love to see a video on city defenses.

Great video, and I am glad you brought up so many valuable points. This was well worth the wait! Just want to say (maybe just for the sake of Canadian pride) that the expansion of Western Canada is a better example of how rail lines cause towns to grow. BC wouldn't have joined Confederation without a national rail, and the story of how that got done is *epic*. I doubt Winnipeg or Regina would exist at all without the rail line. To this day, the Trans-Canada Highway still runs almost parallel to the Trans-Canada railway. Also, hell yeah to the cities defenses video! If you want to chat about some thoughts I have regarding spacefaring cultures and how that would affect city locations and defenses, Janet, let me know. I've been thinking about this at length. :)
@rashkavar4 жыл бұрын
I would definitely enjoy a discussion of defenses. One thing I know that's worthwhile but is something of a blind spot is to consider the implications of what makes a world different from Earth: magic, technology, etc. For example, in a high magic society with D&D's style of magic system, the medieval castle sort of structure that we usually see in fantasy is completely untenable. A lot of the magic relies on line of sight, so the best fortification would be a camouflaged bunker, giving spellcasters nothing to focus on, for a simple example. (Also, if they do break in, you just set up a Tucker's Kobolds style defense in depth before you get into the nice part of the castle where the nobility live. If you don't know that article, read it; it's so good.) Elevated wallwalks are the last thing you want when even the basest of mage apprentices has access to a spell that hits a seen target unerringly from 120 feet away.

So, I have a verse in which I developped cities more closely than the one with the Pyroxene Drow culture. It's a different world called the world of the five territories. The Land of Rain has three human cities, with a forth one composed of Morganez, situated underwater. The presence of sea monsters, several merfolks make access to the sea for food more tenuous, but it's still quite usable for travel. The city of Wesbury is one surrounded by pastures, and is known for it's textile industry. It has adventurer guilds, which further fuel it's wealth. There is the city of Branoz, a merchant city situated at 890m of altitude. It has a mining production on top of merchant buisness, and despite only having a single village to it's name, is able to feed itself thanks to fungiculture. Mushrooms are cheaper than grain in those cities, since grain has to be imported. It produces virburnum and blueberry wine both for local consumption and trade. Yundu is another city, mostly administrative. It's located near a river, and is the belly of the region, surrounded by fertile land, and fresh water. It's fertile yet swampy landscape causes a high moratlity, which allows a lot of exportation of food from surrounding villages.

I have been constructing cities for years and never have I ever had to worry about trade until my city was more of a community sized city. The first and foremost of city structuring are Buildings. Without resources, no building is going to get done. The land is not trading resources for structure. The first thing you mention is trade, That is obviously false.. Provision of food as resources, you consider trade? The sea trades food with the people? How does that make sense?
@WorldAnvil3 ай бұрын

@@WorldAnvil In most cases resources are acquired by acquiring them. You go to the woods and chop down a tree and you have wood which is a resource. You go to a mine and pluck the gems or gold and you have precious metals and stones. You go to a river and fish for food. All of these are resources and no trade necessary. You are dumb.

@@WorldAnvil Apparently you don't you already deleted my resource gathering reply which has absolutely nothing to do with trade. Considering all resources are naturally provided. Technology become the trade off. My knowledge of materials and alchemy. If you can't make a better stronger chemical composition then you need my skills and talent. Building a city requires gathering the resources from the start. Not ownership of resources but again. Trade in the very beginning is actually dumb.
