There is a lot of down time in track and field events. This combined with seeing each other over and over at different events, they become friends with a mutual respect. Everyone knows Lasitskene at her best was the likely winner, she had cleared 2.06 earlier in the meet so went for 2.08 because a tie in the end at 2.04 is broken by having cleared 2.06 earlier in the same competition.

I don't understand why the second-place Ukranian girl just gave up and didn't continue competing after she cleared 2.04m. She literally just stopped competing when she could have continued competing, handing the first-place girl the win without contest. Why would she do that? I realize the first-place girl was jumping better, but still, why wouldn't the Uktraian continue competing at 2.06m?
@waterbug853 жыл бұрын
@@alantaylor6691 It was a bit puzzling and I re-watcted the end of the video to comment as best I could. After 2.04m the bar was set to 2.08m, the Ukranian girl Yaroslava Mahuchikh must've felt that 2.08m was out of her reach that night. This is a mental sport, Mariya Lasitskene had zero misses until the bar was raised to 2.08m. As for Mahuchikh misses I don't recall, but the announcer said she had 17 runs at the bar that night and maybe she felt a little tried. But when you put a young girl (Mahuchikh) up against a seasoned veteran like Mariya Lasitskene that's where the mental game comes in. Also, this was 2019 and Mahuchikh hadn't even jumped 2.06m yet and Lasitskene had.
@alantaylor66913 жыл бұрын
Yup the winner never missed a jump until 2.08m. From what understand the Ukrainian girl could have had the bar set at 2.06m. I mean if those with a lower card had no choice to go by twos then someone with the best card right from the start could set it at 3m so no one clears anymore and they win be default. Also the lady commentator said the Ukrainian agreed to the 2.08
@waterbug853 жыл бұрын
@@alantaylor6691 I believe your right, the bar could have been set at 2.06m. If they both agreed to that height. But the younger girl probably agreed to 2.08m cause she knew she wasn't gonna jump anymore. Sounds about right?

I wonder what he would have thought of her Olympic victory because she could have been the first one to win two Olympic golds in succession. Every realistic sports fan will agree that she could win 2016 Rio with ease. Nonetheless she has left the field in grace after winning the her 5th diamond league in a fierce, dramatic ,epic battle by a clearance of 2.05 from silver medal position. She lives in her own world. I agree, when competing for a World Championship gold medal I don't know why you wouldn't at least try. While Mahuchik was the serious underdog at 2.06m and didn't have the better card, it still was possible that the first-place girl would have had just plain bad luck at 2.06m and not cleared it. Then if Mahuchik did manage to get over the 2.06m bar she would have won the World Champs. It did seem as if Mahuchik really wasn't going to be able to clear 2.06m, but she did clear 2.04m on her third attempt so it would be worth trying, and certainly when the World Championship gold medal is at stake. Anyway, obviously silver is still incredible, but I thought she should have kept competing even if the odds were against her. At the end she was jumping from too far away and coming down on the bar. Also the ones that jump at a angle instead of head-on make it too much time over the bar and long to get over. The ones with great form, get close, head-on, straight up and down, real short flop over. Not long soaring leaps from far away and an angle which makes it harder.
@alantaylor66913 жыл бұрын
That is so interesting. Have you been a high jumper to have technical knowledge? What you say does make sense. I might look at the 2.09m record holder jump to see how she did it. Head-on, or soaring like an eagle? I guess that the record heights you need all the vertical you can get, which would require more of a close, head-on, straight jump. And then they need greater flexibiliity and technical/positional precision to curl their body over the bar backwards, right? LIke when you're going from closer, straight and head-on, the body needs to fold more while going over the bar, right?! So it's more of a basketball layup than a long jump, right?

This was Yaroslava at her technical very best (before she changed): No 'power leak,' i.e. jumping vertically with no drift and part 'summersaulting' backwards so as to completely lift her lower legs over the bar and land on her shoulders. Jumping in this exceptional way causes a big shock through the take off leg (needing leg weight training in order to continue long term) and greater aerial effort. (Levcheno then also jumping brilliantly). Such technique is utilised by many of today's male high jumpers, and in the past by the women's world record holder, and the young and immensely promising Angelina Topic who is trained by her father, a former international high jumper.

@@robertluong220 Yeah, go say that to Radzinivil.. Radzvil... Radzil... The poor girl has not had her name said correctly even once. By the end, when the other commentator said her name correctly multiple times, Lasitskene -who's a household name in the disciplin-, was still called Latinskaya... And this is not even her worst, I watched some other videos and on some, she can't get one name right... Some events, she can't even commentate on because she doesn't have a single clue of what's happening... She can't even geography right, confusing Romania and Moldova, Brazil and Cuba etc... I've seen bad commentary, but this one is the worst, not because she gets stuff wrong sometimes, that happens, but because she gets a lot of stuff inexcusably wrong and doesn't seem to mind, she'll say anything for the sake of saying something even if it doesn't make sense or it is completely wrong. And I know some of these foreign names are hard to pronounce and sometimes you don't even know where to start, but come on, try and read a little, why add or take out letters? Why completely change the words when they're written in front of you and when you've heard them from the announcer and your co-commentator multiple times? I mean, come on: it's her job! She gets money for that! No really, she's very bad, watch some other videos. The women hammer throw is incredible, at some point i thought she was butchering the names on purpose. To this extent, it's just plain lazy and/or disrespectful.

Yes and no. I recall the great athletics commentator Steve Cram being barely able to string two words together when he began. He bravely soldiered on and eventually made top grade. I suspect that the problem lies with the BBC vis a vis lack of training courses and other professional preparation. Plus of course the change in broadcasting culture i.e. it seems these days that the media prefer people off the street lacking diction rather than great speakers. But in this case the girl has quite a good voice and could eventually do very well. Personally I wish her well.

Why are people commenting on their appearance when they're world class athletes! They want to be commended for their skill when they compete. Otherwise they would have signed up for beauty competitions rather than training all day for several years. That's what deserves the accolades!

Mariya floats over the bar like an albatross at 21:23 vow.
220! Included in the hairstyle was to look female hangers in height! This is some kind of surreal movie !!! I know all of them, and I admire them! An incredible sight! But most of all menia admires Maria Lasitskene! Her inspired face, restrained smile, some incredible concentration and many other non-public things make her very attractive. It seems to me that it can be rescued to bend to any height! I wish her to become a world record holder. I order a result of 220!

Women are all the same hight (length) once one blows out the bedside candle. The true height of these ladies will never be known as differences appear on the internet and I doubt that many are keen to reveal such! Blanka Vlasic and Ruth Beitia (standing side by side) appear to be much the same height which I personally guess at circa 6 ft. 3." I don't recall seeing side by side photos. of Imke Onnen, except next to Eike Onnen. She appeared to be 3" shorter than him, and he is reputedly 'only' 6ft. 4 ins. So, one must assume that one (or both) of their internet stated heights is incorrect. We will never know where the truth lies. .... As a retired sport coach I am equally interested in the rare very short high jumpers eg. Inika McPerson, who appears to be around 5ft. 3ins! How relevant is their body height to how high they can jump? Obviously it is relevant, but within reasonable limits, I doubt that it is very significant. .... With regards to height jumped, length jumped, distance thrown, distance golf ball hit etc. the same laws of physics apply the principal one being FORCE = MASS x ACCELERATION. The real biggie in high jump being speed of approach just before leap take off. So the greater the approach speed one can carry the better as such can potentially be converted into height attained. ..... However tall these ladies truly are, and whatever speed they can carry into an immensely technical move, the fact remains that what they achieve is truly beyond breathtaking.
