memories.... i was a high school and college pole vaulter over 50 years ago. watching Mondo is sheer joy to me. and the favorite part is what i've told many before the camaraderie among vaulters is inspiring. it was that way when i vaulted. we always encouraged and celebrated for each other. it was fraternity. sportsmanship exemplified and that still exists. a lesson for everyone

I was at the 200m line. This was a magical moment……6 years of waiting, 3 world records, the beautiful colors of the setting sun and the yellow/gold seats…. And the son of a gun cleared the bar with 90 seconds left in the international feed! Unsure why Seb declared WC will not return to Eugene…the energy was amazing and the athletes get much love from the community. It’s a shame that WA brass with their hotel accommodations/restaurant demands are such a deciding factor.

The event needs the likes of Nilsen, Lightfoot, EJ Obiena, Kendricks and eventually Bo Kanda Lita Baehre, Sondre Guttormsen & Matt Ludwig consistently vaulting 6m+ alongside Mondo who like Sergey Bubka & Yelena Isinbayeva before him will take full advantage of PV's built-in advantage and simply keep breaking the WR 1cm at a time picking up $100k every single time :)

@danieltan2270
@danieltan2270 Жыл бұрын
@@FenceThis Regarding WR rewards, the amount depends on the arrangement track and field meetings have with their sponsors. It is definitely much more than 10k. For World Championship meeting, highest level of T&F meet, sponsor TDK offers 100K for a new WR while a WR set at a DL meeting would pay an athlete 50K from IAAF sponsors. On top of rewards handed out by T&F organisers (or their sponsors) there may also be rewards coming from the athlete's sponsors depending on agreements that were signed. They are usually much more as commercial company such as Nike and Puma can afford. That is probably why breaking it cm by cm is most lucrative.

Not from now, he has to be the best for 14 years in a row to equal the GOAT, Sergey Bubka
@danieltan2270
@danieltan2270 Жыл бұрын
He has done enough to be considered GOAT. His WRs (6.17 to 6.22) are all at greater heights and each is harder to break. He has won all the major titles there is to win and has been dominant in competitions. Moreover, he has gone over 6 m a total of 62 times till date at such tender age of 23 (compared to Sergey's 45 times in his whole career). His accomplishments should be seen in that light. Lets call a spade a spade. If we want to nick pick, Sergey Bubka had a relatively poor record in the Olympic Games despite his dominance then.
@pepelopezcrecimientopersonal
@pepelopezcrecimientopersonal Жыл бұрын
@@danieltan2270 Records are fine but for me it´s not the good way to measure the greatness or dominance. Bob Beamon is the greatest for his WR? Of course not, Carl Lewis was unbeaten 10 years and for me this is the most important. Henry Rono was the greatest for beating 4 WR in 2 months, Daniel Komen for his great records, i don´t think so... Bubka couldn´t be in 84 oly and in 96 was injured, but he was world champion for 14 straight years and for me this is the best way to value an athlete. Duplantis is very good, but he lost even in 19 WC, in my opinion, he has to be like now for at least 8 years more to be considerated GOAT, and honestly i don´t think he will.
@danieltan2270
@danieltan2270 Жыл бұрын
@@pepelopezcrecimientopersonalYou are embellishing his world championship success. The WC is held once every 2 years and prior to '91, it was once every 4 years. In effect, his so called 14 straight years of success is limited to those 6 WC meetings (held over a period of 14 years in '83, '87, '91, '93, '95 & '97). They are not even 6 consecutive years. Like i said i wont want to nick pick on Sergey's illustrious career but his other major championship records, i.e.Oly & EC are not fantastic. In those years when there was no WC, what major title did he win to make the claim that he was the best in those years too (for a continous period of 14 years). Did he win the Olympic Gold in between WC years? He was there in 1992 and 2000 Olympics but didnt medal. So isnt it exaggerating to say he is the best for 14 straight years when in '92, he didnt win the Olympics. Based on your measure, why dont you say Renand Lavillenie is GOAT as he was the pole vault overall winner of the IAAF Diamond League in seven consecutive years, from 2010 to 2016 (compared to 6 meetings in those 6 non consecutive years when WC was held). In total, he won 37 x Diamond League meetings. And each Diamond League meeting is comparable to a WC as it involves majority of top pole vaulters in the world (by world ranking), i.e. world class field event. Furthermore, Renand won 3 European Athletics Championship in 2010, 2012 and 2014 compared to only one won by Sergey in '86. Renand won a Gold in 2012 Olympics and a silver in 2016. Quite comparable to Sergey in terms of Olympic success but nevertheless is one silver more. Both Sergey and Renand have been surpassed by Armand Duplantis in terms of better WRs, number of succesful jumps at height 6m and above and dominance in competitions (winning streaks). At 22, he is already holder of 21 x Diamond League meeting winner. He has a record of 20 back to back winning streak while both Sergey and Renand have about 11 only. By the way, Duplantis was only 19 and he got a silver in the WC 2019 at Doha. He had also won two European Chiampionahips in 2018 (when he was only 18) and 2022. What did Seegey win at 18 & 19? Though Sergey achieved stèllar success in WC, same cannot be said about his Olympic and EC records. And Duplantis holds almost all the age records below 20 for pole vault too. He was dominant since he was a kid. So all that more than make up for the years that you feel is missing for Duplantis. Lastly, i can understand your consideration as there are others too who are dumbfounded by Duplantis accomplishment at such a young age and cannot accept he has outshone Sergey.

who knows why the pole can't be made longer and more flexible? and then they will jump both 6.50m and 7m
@Sycophantastic
@Sycophantastic Жыл бұрын
The pole can be any length and have any flexibility the athlete desires. There are very few rules around that. The longer and stiffer the pole, the more difficult it is to complete the vault.

The amount of force and speed needed to bend those poles is insane and making longer poles requires so much speed in which if you dont have usain bolt level speed it's practically a death sentence

It can be longer. It can be flexible. Than you have to be faster. And stronger. And your form has to change. It’s not at all that simple.

He knew he could do 6.25 that day, but why? Let's wait for the next meet, do 6.22 and get additional 100k. That's what Sergey Bubka did for 15 straight years. That's my problem with Pole Vault.

Nah, that's a great system, it gives them a way to get paid. It's not like there's lots of money to be made in pole vault otherwise.

It happens all the time that athletes with dual citizenship choose to compete for the "other" country, i.e. the one they didn't grow up in. Here in Sweden, it's not that uncommon to read about a young talent that grew up in Sweden that chose to compete for another country, and vice versa. It usually comes down to choosing the conditions which they feel will serve them the best in their career. In Mondo's case, it came down to several things, e.g. that track&field is much bigger in Europe, so the support organization is better in Sweden. The qualifying system is also "better" in Sweden, since contrary to the American qualifications, it doesn't come down to one single performance on a specific day (the US Championships). Also, he wasn't a stranger to Sweden, he spent many of his summers here during his childhood. He also lives here since a few years.
