For my story, I'm using a hybrid method, where my initial world building prompts came from questions that arose from the early plot and magic system ideas. My attempts to answer these questions through world building have in turn, influenced the story and character motivations. It's a kind of back and forth that keeps happening: world building> plot idea > questions> World building. Slowly the outline is filling up, as events expand into longer, more rigidly structured sequences. It's like the world building is helping to join isolated events, and more often than not, even creating new events. Feels like I'm reaching the saturation point of world building though, since all the main events from start to end of what I'm calling one book seem close enough together, that I don't need that many questions answered with more world building. Almost ready to consolidate information, and purely focus on the outline.

One thing I always find I do in terms of my worldbuilding that works - for me at least - is I start out and create the broader features of the world and then fill in a bit of the detail. I then find when I start working on plotting and characterisation, what I come up with is less formulaic, because it can be informed in interesting ways by the world I create. But the other thing that happens is once I've established that foundation of worldbuilding and begin the plotting and character development, additional worldbuilding details tend to organically emerge and overtime it all becomes wonderfully intertwined and organic. Basically, I think it's good for the story and the worldbuilding to not be done in silos, but to grow together so that they complement each other.
