6 Days in and it is time to see how our worms are doing with the bananas. I think the results speak for themselves but lets try and see what happens when we switch from a fruit they love to a vegetable that is more dense.
The asparagus was frozen before adding to both bins.
Here are some of the other items you saw in this video:
For the Mud H2O gloves

For a kitchen scale used to weigh the food and worms
amzn.to/2GH99dl
Food Processor used to grind up the food
amzn.to/2UBAPEk
Rubbermaid Brute Totes 10 Gallon
amzn.to/2IGOmcj
Want to add that the asparagus we bought was bad upon bringing it home which is why I had so much.

That blended banana tripped off quite a feeding frenzy. Can hardly wait to see how the asparagus does.. and how much progress is made on the whole banana peels. Thanks for the update!

Grounded up food looks like the winner. Thanks for sharing. 😎🌱

And that's how you convince me to blend my food

It was surprising to me how quickly they went through the blended food compared to the food that wasn't ground up.

I'm growing worms myself for gardening and fishing. I'd like to see an experiment between grains, fruits, and things like paper and cardboard to see what grows the biggest worms.

For my bins I noticed the largest worms when the bin was really wet and the material felt heavy. I'm guessing they needed more muscle to push through the material and ended up with really large red worms. Of course you can always get European Nightcrawlers which are just bigger in general. I have some in my Urban Worm Bag v2.0 but haven't had the best success with them. I'm still trying to figure out what I'm missing but they seem to appear and eat but dig deeper down into the bag than red worms.

Someone asked why Frozen. When you freeze food it breaks the food then and it makes it easier for the worms to eat the food.

Hello, what Ive noticed is ground it much better they seem to breed faster from what Ive seen. Not sure if this make sense the faster they eat the faster they breed.
@WorldComposting
@WorldComposting 5 жыл бұрын
That would make sense as worms try to reproduce to be in an equilibrium with the food. More easily digestible food means more worms can be in the bin.

Are you using grit? I didn’t catch you say anything about it. Blended looks to be doing quite well. I look forward to continue watching your progress.

I didn't add any grit to the bins but the bedding the worms were in probably had some crushed egg shells.

Is the whole food frozen or fresh? Looks like the worms like the blended food but could it be blended banana vs asparagus. Lol like kids they go to the sweet stuff.

All food was frozen. I added the banana first and now I'm adding the asparagus. I know they love bananas so yes I want to see if the asparagus goes just as quickly.

I live in the mohave desert, so outside worm bins are out of the question. I keep the house around 78 to 80 degrees. Will that be alright for the worms?
@WorldComposting
@WorldComposting 5 жыл бұрын
That should be fine and if you need to cool it down add some ice to the bin. I would monitor the temperature a bit more just to make sure it doesn't get over 90.

you are feeding the full bin way to much they did not even eat all the food from last time.

He fed both bins the same amount. This is an experiment to see if ground up food gets processed faster than whole foods. In order to do that he needs to do the same amount in each bin.

@@jims4763 he is still feeding them more then they can eat in a week. I know it is an experiment but what if the banana or asparagus is still not eaten next week is he going to feed them again and build up more food.

@@maureengosselin9386 I don't see why he wouldn't next week. I find a little more time to breakdown doesn't hurt, unless it's really wet and goes anaerobic. I usually end up feeding whole unfrozen most of the time and I feed every week to two weeks. A lot of times there's still food left and it doesn't really affect my bins too much. Of course this is just my experience.

Why would you have to wait until all the previous food is gone? I just keep adding more food and bedding, even if the previous food isn't broken down all the way.

why frozen food?
@WorldComposting
@WorldComposting 5 жыл бұрын
Two reasons first I freeze all my food as I have the extra freezer space and it should kill any eggs from bugs. Second is so that I could build up enough food for the tests as I needed to add enough food to both bins at the same time.
