Couple of updates: Cockenzie power station is now gone. There are now three bridges with the new Queensferry Crossing (named in reference to the original ferry route) taking road traffic, and the Forth Road Bridge now only used by buses and pedestrians. The Forth Bridge (AKA Forth Rail Bridge) after many years finally has all that scaffolding taken down and looking like new. The phrase "like painting the Forth Bridge" is no longer valid, as they say it won't need painted again for at least 20 years.

Most people when visiting Scotland head for Edinburgh then on up to the Highlands. There is a most beautiful part of the country that most visitors miss, and that is The Scottish Borders which is located at the bottom of the country next to England. It has lovely little villages such as Lilliesleaf, Middlem , Silkirk, Askirk etc.etc. with the stunning Eildon Hills which was Sir Walter Scott's favorite view. His beautiful home--worth visiting, ls located in The Borders. It is gorgeous country!!

@maggieblyth20776 жыл бұрын
He is a sassanach and has a good few things wrong in his narration
@lincolnjansz7816 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree, Mara. It seems there will always be malcontents moaning about 'sassanachs' and 'English rule' and bla bla bla. They should simply grow up and realise that history cannot be reversed, nor can it be put in the dock; and they'll appear so much more dignified if they simply stopped whining about the past. Most of the world pronounces it 'lock' (just as most of the world pronounces Bach as 'bark', not 'bakx' ..)....not many people can imitate the sound of a man trying to clear the back of his throat and gagging on his tongue at the same time to produce the sound '....kx'. Perpetual moaners make me sick.
@maggieblyth20776 жыл бұрын
so because most of the world can't pronounce it you think loch should be changed to lock? Maybe the BBC should have looked a bit harder for a narrator because not only did he get the pronunciation of loch wrong he called the haggis a sausage. Perpetual ignoramuses make me sick.
@maggieblyth20776 жыл бұрын
The fact is the narrator doesn't know what he is talking about and can't even pronounce loch right
@lincolnjansz7816 жыл бұрын
Maggie Blyth do we then take it that your stock of knowledge about all manner of things is so encyclopedic that never could the word 'ignorant' ever be applied to you in any context, and that that you are unquestionably right in everything you ever pronounce upon? That would be a very tall claim, and one practically certain to be falsified in the event. In my opinion (which though it may be anathema to someone of your stern Scotch standards) the pronouncing of 'Loch' as 'lock' is unquestionably more euphonius than its 'proper' Scottish pronunciation of 'locxk' or something equally ugly, so it is the pronunciation that sounds nicer that will turn out to have a longer currency - mark my words - than the difficult, unappealing sound of a man trying to hoick a fishbone or similar indigestible fragment out of the back of his throat. In the end - in the long reach of linguistic metamorphosis - euphony usually wins out. And lastly, for my money I'd rather listen to a proper English speaker deliver these educational descriptions ( because we can atleast undertsand what he is saying) rather than strain to understand the not-unattractive, but convoluted enunciations and phonetic gymnastics that many broad Scottish speakers of English seem doomed to struggle with. It's a great talent to be a welcoming civilization (meaning hospitality to other ways of talking and thinking and achieving the common ends of life), and I think the Scottish are further back along that spectrum than most other civilisations. Still, I'd say that's also one of their charms - for those who still see real virtue in the will of men and women to stand and hold, and not to yield. But I'd say it's not the Sassanach you have to stand against these days.

I love the architecture in Edinburgh I might be a bit biased being Scottish but I honestly believe it's one of the most beautiful cities in the world. One of my complaints however would be some of the buildings on princess street mostly built in 60's and 70's, they have no place being there and the only way to describe them would be as absolute eye sores, it's honestly unforgivable when you see some of the beautiful buildings that were knocked down so these monstrosities could take their place
