Wonderful memories thinking back when GUNSYND raced. What a horse! No other ever been like him, and off course a grey! I think he appreciated his 4 “mates” the SYND and loved them with all his heart! You can’t tell me animals are “just” animals, this guy showed us all! Awesome.

What a great horse he was. He looked like he was being swamped in the Melbourne Cup under that huge weight, a race realistically he shouldn't have had any chance whatsoever in, but never count the champ out. He had enormous will and that carried him through to the finish in that race.

He was the horse that began my love affair with horse racing, just a young kid at the time but he was my hero until the King came along.

The greatest QLD horse of them all no doubt. Others . Bernborough,Falvelon, Buffering, Black Piranha, And although he was from Taranaki NZ the mighty Rough Habit he won all there big races and was as much QLD’s as he was ours

$ 1,300.00 was a fair little whack of money in 1969. But you got 4 old farts about town at the top of their game in the local outback business scene. They can match that split 4 ways. Over a beer, " We're still all in the black if it flops. Detect a bit of ticker in that yearling. Wadda you reckon ? Give it a shot ? One foot in front of the other. We're entrepreneurs, all of us. More than one way to skin a cat in business.".

As far as I am aware the only horse to win at least one race on all ten metropolitan tracks in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. I seriously doubt there would be any horse that has raced on all those ten tracks let alone win a race on each one.

Does his name have any special meaning?

Kind of: it's a conjoining of "Goondiwindi" and "Syndicate". The pronunciation of the home town is "Gun-da-win-di", listen to the song at 5:23. So joining the first syllables together gives you "Gun-Synd". It's no exaggeration to say he was the most popular Australian horse in a generation. Greys are easy to spot in the field, so they are naturally popular amongst punters and the average racegoer, but even jockey Roy Higgins said "he was the most fun". I was a fan, too - I had a toy Gunsynd. When I was a toddler my Dad made me a painted broomstick & wood head horse toy for me and painted it grey.
