McKinley Morganfield (April 4, 1913 - April 30, 1983), known professionally as Muddy Waters, was an American blues musician who is often cited as the "father of modern Chicago blues".
Muddy Waters grew up on Stovall Plantation near Clarksdale, Mississippi, and by age 17 was playing the guitar and the harmonica, emulating the local blues artists Son House and Robert Johnson. He was recorded in Mississippi by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress in 1941. In 1943, he moved to Chicago to become a full-time professional musician. In 1946, he recorded his first records for Columbia Records and then for Aristocrat Records, a newly formed label run by the brothers Leonard and Phil Chess.
In the early 1950s, Muddy Waters and his band-Little Walter Jacobs on harmonica, Jimmy Rogers on guitar, Elgin Evans on drums and Otis Spann on piano-recorded several blues classics, some with the bassist and songwriter Willie Dixon. These songs included "Hoochie Coochie Man", "I Just Want to Make Love to You" and "I'm Ready". In 1958, he traveled to England, laying the foundations of the resurgence of interest in the blues there. His performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960 was recorded and released as his first live album, At Newport 1960.
Muddy Waters' influence was tremendous, not just on blues and rhythm and blues but on rock and roll, hard rock, folk music, jazz, and country music. His use of amplification is often cited as the link between Delta blues and rock and roll.
The Line-up in this concert:
- Muddy Waters; guitar & vocals
- Luther Johnson; guitar
- Bob Margolin; guitar
- Brian Bisesi; guitar
- Willie "Pinetop" Perkins; piano
- Jerry Portnoy; harmonica
- Calvin Jones; bass
- Willie Lee Smith; drums
This video was recorded at the North Sea Jazz Festival on 15 July 1979 at the Congress Centre, The Hague, The Netherlands.

I think I wanna cry. The #1 in blues so close to home (also Molde, Norway) the summer I quit school (aged 17) after 12 years, starting my academic career - that lasted 4 months. I preferred going to the cinemas and record stores instead of my math lessons, and I quit by Xmas, now 18. Started working Jan. 25, 1980, had 6,000 LPs that I sold in 2007. Also 2,000 CDs, 2,300 video tapes and 3,000 DVDs. And I have NO regrets, thank God or Jimi Hendrix I didn't become a math teacher or whatever! Been to 600+ concerts, although nothing in 22 months due to Covid 2020-2022 (no show at all in 2021 for the first time since 1977...). Also watched 400+ artists at 42 festivals 1981-2005 in Sweden, Denmark and Germany. I'm lucky to have caught B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Champion Jack Dupree and Albert Collins. /J, Sweden

I was at a blues bar in Detroit (1978 ish) called The Soup Kitchen. Muddy walked in with a few members from his band and jammed for about an hour a half. The house band didn’t mind since they jammed right along with them. I was Awesome!!!

This took place a month before I was born. When you got the blues it can feel like your problems are the only thing that matters. Finding this performance and the fact that it and countless others exist at the tip of my fingers and that I carry them all around in my pocket makes me feel so lucky that I start thinking, maybe I don't got it so bad as I thought...

He was great, as was Little Walter. But have you heard Charlie Musselwhite, also a white guy? I saw him here in Sweden some 20 years ago,j ust after his wife had been attacked (but survived) by a shark while on vacation in Hawaii. I asked him about it after the show, and he was surprised I knew about it. She wasn't badly hurt. Then of course there's Kim Wilson. Not only in The Fabulous Thunderbirds for 45+ years, but also his solo albums, wow! A wellknown, Swedish mouth harp player who thought he was good felt ashamed after having caught them live once (I've seen them twice)...

Look at Jerry's head when he sees Brian Bisesi on stage! ( replacing Luther Jr Johnson who was ill, until the end of the tour. Saw him in Lyon, france, some days later, killer show).BTW another desastrous tv show , never showing the good musicians at the right time. Shame on you North Sea, and the same for most of the same in France,at this time, tv incompetence at its best. Too bad , the sound is pretty good.
