Man! Neils on the bass.... never heard upright played like that, breath taking!!!

One of the GOATs for sure! Tone to die for and his absolutely perfect pitching lent him the sound of absolute authority that was the foundation of Peterson's sophisticated and ever modulating bop harmonies. Surely, a match made in heaven! And, there is his sense of time here, no drummer right, just sublime, super funky at times before anyone even invented funk! Monster!
@joshmcdzz6925 Жыл бұрын
Neils' absolutely the most technical bassplayer of all time from his harmonics bassline to his 3 fingered solos and his percussive ghost notes walking lines, just outta this world.. Thought it was Jaco that started incorporating the harmonic thing in bass lines but now I know where he got it from - the GOAT Neils

Great concert of Oscar Peterson and Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen. That time July 15, 1979, I was present in the Congres Gebouw Festival Theatre in The Hague and was able to watch this concert. I had a little record shop in the Theatre's cellar and had the opportunity between selling the records to go and watch this concert. Wow....I'm proud having been present there and watched these two great musicians, who both passed away already, much too early. Great video; watch and enjoy.

I'm a lifelong jazz pianist, and if there is an aspect of technique more difficult than having your left hand double your fastest right hand lines, I haven't heard of it. I call it The Final Frontier

Oscar is simply wonderful! Niels, of course, is great as well. They both make it look effortless but also their playing is very melodic and emotional.

Soft rain here, sitting on the porch by myself, bourbon in hand, birds in full voice. It's early Sunday morning here too - I work nights and the spinach garden is looking good for pesto later! 🤣 Nothing is better than Oscar and Niels at 7.53 am on this Sunday morning! Kind regards to you, sir, from NZ 4 years later! 👌

Between Indiana and There's No Greater Love, Oscar plays Monty Alexander's composition "Consider". Please add it on your list ! Most of the tunes written are wrong here. I'll go back and establish the right list.
Uhm, Stereo recording was a thing even back in 1979. Why are we listening to a mono mix down?

How did Oscar pick this bass player? Compare this guy to Ray Brown? What am I saying .... you can't ... impossible. Ray Brown had totally inventive bass lines as compared to this... But then again, Oscar was the great man to choose who he wanted, and I was a nobody bass player... but no matter... the ears don't lie.
@Archie583Ай бұрын
It is just my humble opinion, but I think that NHOP was head and shoulders above Ray Brown, Chuck Israels, Paul Chambers, or even Ron Carter. And that isn't said to diss any of those bass players, each of whom I have been stunned by at various times, as they are all virtuosos. NHOP, however, was from a different planet altogether. He had the "inventiveness" that each of the aforementioned bass players displayed, but also the technical ability that the aforementioned bass players could only dream of having. Just so you'll know, it was Ray Brown who suggested NHOP as a replacement for him in Oscar's group. Ray thought that NHOP was "the only bass player alive" who could "match" Oscar's technical ability and had the innate knowledge of music theory to "keep up with Oscar." So, there you have it. The guy he replaced in the band is the person who suggested NHOP to Oscar.
