If you watch the super special edition, Luke uses force invisibility to beat Vader. Vader uses sith fall reduction and demonstrates how Palpatine survived DS2. Luke gets into the X wing he arrived in and meets up with his friends at the end. it was never George's vision for Empire to be such a downer.
