It could arguably be a step up in sound design and complexity from the 16 bits sound and memory limitations, but it's those limitations that gave old soundtracks a timeless, unmistakable character. Those limitations meant they had to do A LOT with melody, I feel the Mega CD counterpart completely disregarded melody and relied to heavily on sustained string notes and generic sounding ambient pads. Comparing the Ice Zone tracks together highlights this perfectly.
@5nesta Жыл бұрын
@RotheraPoint While I do agree that limitations breed creativity, they're also meant to be constantly pushed even if the results are lackluster, especially at an early stage of development such as the Sega CD.

The music is gorgeous, but it's a shame the themes aren't carried over from the original. The Tube and Welcome to the Machine are both sinister to be sure, but they don't burrow themselves into your brain the same way as the Genesis' eerie, theremin-like synth.
@MetalPcAngel8 жыл бұрын
That I have to highly agree with. The Genesis just gave most of the themes this. . .dread of the dark, blue sea. Even to now - I still hear the music playing when I go out into the sea and just stare off into the endless view. Something I think gamers these days have either forgotten or just don't appreciate at all is that these older games didn't need top notch 4k graphics or handholding. All that was needed was decent gameplay, decent soundtrack, and a decent story. Yes, some of these games were not easy by any means but that's what makes them unforgettable classics. These were the games that shaped the future of gaming.

If Sato-san had just connected the pins on the 68000 to the expansion port, the Sega CD would not have needed a second 68000 and bridge RAM. The unit could've been $100 cheaper, and far more successful, like the PC Engine CD-ROM add-on. The Genesis library could've made the transition to CD like the PC Engine did. By 1995 when the PlayStation came out at $299, Sega could've priced a cost-reduced all-in-one at $199-249 to hold off the PlayStation with pseudo-3D games like Soul Star while they fixed the issues with the Saturn. What could have been.

I can see that they (especially James) dont make the playthroughs focused on the games themselves, as early cinemassacre used to be. I mean, their playthrough of DKC3 on SNES was the perfect example: ridiculous to the point of them bashing on an amazing game for not passing a screen with a huge bright "R" spelled for them to press a single button that they couldnt figure it out. That to me clarify the fact that they are more concerned in delivering huge amounts of content than anything else related to something more technical. Its also clear to me that they are in a moment of reestructuring their crew; the absence of Jameswhile creating content and their departure with bootsy and guitar guy are problems still to be solved. However, they do get it right sometimes. Pepsi Man, Resident Evil and Eccho episodes were pretty good imo (Apart from the last toy dolphin scene that really sucked). (And also lets not forget that they do have some kind of pleasure to trash sega games even in early days. Both James and Mike are admitedly too much Nintendo oriented gamers, which sometimes just comes of annoying; I can pretty much challenge you to find the last time they spoke good about a Genesis game, and you sure wont have an easy time looking for that. And when they do find a good genesis game, they always make sure to counterpart it with a "better" nintendo game. hahahahaha)
