Arcade Longplay [266] Dino Rex

The story to this is pretty entertaining, but the engrish is pretty hard to understand. basically, the world is primarily ruled by the most powerful tribe: the Amazons. Once every year, smaller clans would participate in a tournament for the Amazons. the winner of this tournament would become the husband of the Queen of the Amazons for one year and had as much authority as her: Dino Rex. If he continued defending his title, he'd remain Dino Rex. Each tribe is skilled in raising a specific fighting dinosaur. The Allosaur tribe is technically the most storyline-correct of the fighters to choose. You start in your own village and must prove you're the best trainer of THAT species. Once you do, you then travel the clans and prove you are better than the others. You end up finding out that every clan you beat sees your potential and hopes you will be the one to de-throne the current Dino Rex because the guy has been the champ for years due to having the largest, most vicious dinosaur that has helped him retain his title. The biggest insult is that the Tyrannosaurus is a fat dumpy thing with a bunch of belly bumps and body splashing attacks. However, it makes sense when the Dino Rex final boss uses it, as it symbolizes how both he and his dinosaur didn't do any training and had everything gifted to them every year. But anyway, the main problem with the Tyrannosaur is that there isn't a different one for the player. I mean, it's frigging fat and purple, it's fucking angry drunk Barney!

I remember finding this game at a danish ferry terminal, I must have been around 12. We were in a hurry to get on the boat so I could only watch it for a minute or two. As a dinosaur loving kid and arcade junkie it was one of the most amazing things I had ever seen. I searched high and low to find another cabinet with the game but was unsuccessful. I obsessed over the idea of finding it again one day like a long lost love... Ten years later I found the mame version.

Yes, that sounds so much like my story. I think that was part of the magic of arcade games, you'd find a new cabinet in the most random locations and you never knew if you were able to go there again. There was a real scarcity attached to the experience, and coming across a new game was like stumbling across a rare treasure. @@backfandangoX

There's actually some implied lore as to why the T-Rex is fat. Turns out, it's owner, the Husband of the Amazon Queen only has to defend his title once a year, and then, he'd get to lounge. Since he that means he doesn't train his T-Rex, it gets fat, and eventually, both it, and the Amazon King's laziness catch up to both of them when you arrive.

If anybody ever wondered why the artstyle might have looked familiar to you, then here is the kicker: Takatsuna Senba (of Gun Frontier and Metal Black fame) worked on this as well, serving as his final title at Taito and the unnofficial third Gun Frontier project, succeding Metal Black as the second one.

Choppy animation, you are FORCED to say on your side of the screen (apparently both dino's are willing to not attack each other till the get into proper spots) and those SOUND EFFECTS...Yet, this did have a few nifty things. The Stage interactivity, the would be storyline, and at the time a 'power meter' that had LEVELS and you didn't have to use it in a limited timeframe after getting it.

I think they should keep the theme of old dinosaur designs and maybe take a bit more inspiration to old paleo artists like Zdenek Burian or maybe even just take Jurassic Park designs. A game with the old version of how scientists viewed dinosaurs. Where all two legged dinosaurs' bodies were stood straight up in a vertical posture looking kangaroo like. Unlike today where the bodies are horizontal with the legs underneath, as they should be. Must take in note that scientists didn't have as many specimens to study from as they do today.

Honestly... this game sure had a lot of attention to detail, whatever else may be said of it. Like the last keeper's sprite with the whip being fat to reflect the artwork. There's something oddly appealing about it all. It looks fun, like the developers were just having a blast despite having a deadline to meet.
