More than 30 years later, I've just realized there is not actually a mucus themed level, but a toxic waste one.

Complete FM Synth Midi Soundeffects ^^. I had a Roland SCC1 at this time, which had a complete wavetable set just for Soundeffects. Well, the midi recordings i have from that time still beat any software midi synth.

I had the Atari ST version, and this looks identical. Only thing that differs is that the sound is worse here.

Soundcards still not really a thing on PC's back then. They didn't transition to "home computers" yet, still office machines.
@bormisha7 жыл бұрын
The sound effects are done really badly in this version. Could be done a lot better using the FM synth. The music is ok though.

PC speaker is just on or off. Clever programmers made PWM interrupt driven music though it but its still basic

Looks identical to the ST/Amiga version but the sound effects and music do seem a tad off compared to the Amiga. Not bad though.

It seems that the developers just ignored the SFX design altogether. The MIDI SFX implementation is pathetic. It could be done a lot better using the FM synth. Music is ok, though. Probably a library of "standard" patches for the OPL.

On my retro pc and on Dosbox this game runs slow while choosing VGA graphics. On CGA it works fast. In the internet many people suggests that it's a common problem with this game. How did you make it work that fast?
@dvpemberton11 ай бұрын
I remember having to pay with ega graphics as my pc originally couldn't do vga. Still a great game. Easier than the first one.

It was a difficult second part of Rick Dangerous not always fair. Today a game like that would be too difficult.

This was the point of Rick Dangerous to be hardcore and piss people off, but the game was so addictive you could still try again and again after destroing dozen of joystick by throwing them at the wall. 😆
@Tarets Жыл бұрын
@@mattx5499 No. The point was the same as in any other game of the era - to lengthen the game as if it had more content, than it actually did. Also, there are plenty of ridiculously hard games to play today. Stop the boomer talk.
@TheVanillatech Жыл бұрын
@@Tarets No. The point was to challenge yourself, you vs the mind of the creators. It was always the case. No "regenerating health" back on those days. We rocket jumped our way out of situations. Ori & The Blind Forest follows the same tradition, a throwback to challenging platformers of yesteryear and one of the best games released this decade. To real gamers, todays games are boring and far too easy. More like interactive experiences than actual games. PS. Boomers were born in the 40's and 50's. They are 70-80 years old now.
@Tarets Жыл бұрын
@@TheVanillatech Woah, look at THE REAL GAMER, thinking that from all the difficult games today it's Ori that adheres to retro challenge design :D BTW, you giving boomer definitions makes you even more of a boomer dude.
@TheVanillatech Жыл бұрын
@@Tarets Not sure that explaining syntax and dictorial definitions changes the date I was born on. But yes, I think Ori was an amazing title. I got stuck a handful of times, and it wasn't cerebral. It was motor skills issues! :D Im OLD. But I persevered, took my time, died a dozen times then BOOM! MADE IT! Great feeling! Excellent game design.

@nerdvector3 жыл бұрын
@@MasterControl90original The solution is to speed up the game using HEX editor. You should edit MAIN.EXE. Find address 00009D0Eh. The old values of the following two bytes (75,FB) are to be replaced by new values (90,90). Then find address 00009D13h. Old values there are 74 and FB. Replace them by 90 and 90. Just remember to do a backup.
