This was the very first arcade game I played. My dad gave me a bunch of quarters and I played it in a Chinese restaurant during the days when arcade cabinets were everywhere. Before playing it the only other video games I had played were Atari games at a relative's house. I was very young but I remember thinking that this game was much better than the Atari games. It was then that I realized what the idea of "quality" was.

This Goddamn arcade cabinet was everywhere, especially in fish and chip shops here in Australia, so much so that I actually can smell old cooking oil now just watching this. I remember seeing it pretty much every time my Dad would take me somewhere in the city. I can only guess that it must have been a really cheap cabinet, lol.

I grew up with this shoot-em-up game. I watched the movie "Midway" in the 1980s, and realized how important that battle was in World War II for the Alilies. So in this game, there are 3 parts to each stage - you fight against the enemy planes, then you face the battleships that fire at you as well as the planes, and then, the boss enemy, a larger battleship, for you to try to completely destroy or you fail the stage. If you get enough hits on that boss enemy battleship, you clear the stage and you go on to the next mission.

That last stage is extremely tough. NO CONTINUES. Also, Jungle Kumi is the alias of Kumi Yamaga.

For the NES version, the tunes and sound effects were re-arranged by... Yuukichan's Papa (Yoshihiro Sakaguchi) Manami Ietel (Manami Matsumae) Ogeretsu Kun (Takashi Tateishi) Perorin (Hiroshige Tonomura)

I think its 16 stage, I remember we made it on one coin. We were playing with ma friend on the lunch 45 min break. We did not want to quit as we have never reached so far so we kept playing and came late for afternoon lesson. We said to Mrs. teacher sorry we are late but I lost my wallet so we were looking for it. Last stage is just one gigantic chaos, complete mess

On 1943: The Battle Of Midway, the last stage lets you continue but on 1943 Kai: Midway Kaisen, the last stage won't let you continue. I played both of these games for a long time and i still play these games today.

I need to say that for the NES 1943, it was largely H. Tonomura (Perorin) who was involved with the re-scoring of Jungle Kumi's original music. Why? The end title theme on the NES version, after you've defeated Totaku the second time around, has a similar chord progression as the Moon theme from the NES DuckTales.

It's kind of an overseas gaming battle. Isn't it? I used to be very strategic when trying to break through the rival ships (a horde of well-armed, incessant and intensely combative enemies). That's otherwise the onset of a toe-to-toe aerial rivalry related to a dauntless and mass shooting action which comprises an explosively exciting ending also. Doesn't it? I had so much fun playing it years ago. Bye. Peace out!!

I always found it odd that a Japanese company made a game about a huge defeat for their country in WWII. It would be like Americans making a game about the Vietnam conflict where the player controls the Viet Cong.

The most contradictory thing about this game is that 1943 is a game created by the Japanese that exalts one of the greatest defeats of the Japanese navy in all times. This proves that in 1987, the year the game was created, the trauma of the 2nd World War had already been overcome, and, even at that time, relations between the United States and Japan were already very friendly.
@snooker97739 ай бұрын
Not really. The US forced Japan to sign the Plaza Accord in 1985. The US aimed at turning over the serious trade deficit with Japan and suppressing Japan's strong economic growth, especially the leading industries. Japan was in a similar situation as China now.

As much as I love this game, there's a historical inaccuracy: the Lockheed P-38 Lightning (your plane) isn't a carrier-based fighter, even though it's shown operating from and landing on a carrier in this game. The P-38 is too big for carrier operations and the US Navy didn't like aircraft with liquid-cooled engines.
@snooker97739 ай бұрын
The name of the game isn't even the year the battle happened. The battle of Midway actually happened in 1942. Among the 16 main ships in the game, only the all 4 aircraft carriers (Kaga, Akagi, Hiryu, Soryu) were destroyed.
