Here's a little bit of interesting info for Centurion lovers.If you look at the road wheels, there's a larger gap between the second and third road wheels than between the others. There is a reason for this.If the front idler wheel takes a hit and wrecks it, you can still get mobile with a little work.The track has to be broken and dragged over the third top jockey rollers Let it droop over and adjust the length of the track. Join it up again between the second and third road wheels and away you go!

From the first time I saw and read about the Centurion tank, there was something I really liked about this British beauty. The Centurion has had a very long service life , even being upgraded many times over like the South African Olifant tank, which I believe is still being used. The only drawback, as it has been mentioned, is the dismal range.

I served with REME Fitters Troop B Squadron 1st RTR and the Royal Armoured Corp training unit at Catterick. In Germany I was a member of Periodic REME teams inspection on tanks in BAOR. The Centurion was incredibly unreliable, the main engine which developed 650 BHP had twin spark plugs per cylinder, the exhaust plugs on the outer sections of the Vee oiled up regularly and the engine would lose power. We used to do mag drop tests when the engine was at normal running temp. If there was a rpm drop of 250 we would change all the spark plugs and on a hot engine it was torture.. He is wrong in saying the clutch was accessed through the belly plate, it was accessed from the top where we did all the work on engines and transmissions including changing the clutch life of which it had three. The engine was designed to use 4 pints oil/hour and the tank held 33 gallons. Fuel on the MK 12 / 13 was 212 gallon with a range of about 65 miles. Fuel consumption was 3/4 gallons per hour. The main brakes wouldn't stop a tank on steep downward descent, they weren't power assisted and one used to literally stand on the brake pedal. This required Centurion drivers to be very good with gear changes on the Merritt Brown crash gearbox. The ARV when towing a gun tank was over 100 English tons, a bastard on steep hills. I remember when in Berlin towing a dead gun tank through a bus station as the Berliners were going to work the ARV couldn't gain traction on the cobblestones and the steel tracks started picking them up and throwing them around. The German police stopped the complete traffic flow so that we could negotiate a bend and moved the locals as we slowly slid towards them, we made it and brought back 5 gun tanks to Smuts Barracks that day probably to the delight of the Russian guards whose turn it was to guard Hess. I commanded, drove, inspected and repaired Centurions. Believe me we were very happy to see the Chieftain Mk 3S (S for sand, Iran contract) when we re equipped despite its problems. I remember working as an inspector for the Royal Ordnance factories UK involved with the 4030 phase 1,2 and 3 which became the Challenger. Australia was still ordering parts for Centurions from ROF Leeds. We received and order for 3 Centurion final drives. In my 13 years in REME and working for 11 Fd WKSPS FRG in both Europe and Canada I never changed a Centurion final drive for the Brits. In EMER's (Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Manuals, ) there was 250 modifications of varying degrees, Chieftain was in the thousands within the first 4 years. I liked the Centurion, the faults were known and we had developed the tools to work in places where one needed to be almost double jointed. Rarely did we experience something beyond our control.

Or fighting alongside someone fielding Centurion The only country still doing so is South Africa with their heavily modified Olifant, which has an entirely different turret profile Israel has modified theirs into heavy APCs, heavy engineer APCs, and CEVs Jordan has also developed a Centurion-based family of heavy vehicles, with variants like APC, ambulance, or command post Both of those countries' tanks, naturally, lack turrets and have different upper hulls, so again the course is not all that useful

10:06 A little correction here: The Merrit-Brown Transmission of the Centurion, just like the Cromwell, Churchill and Comet, didnt have a fixed steering radius for each gear, but rather a smallest possible steering radius for each gear. You can start a turn smoothly with slight turning, and tighten the turn till you reach the minimum radius allowed by that gear, depending on how far you move the steering levers.
@jackgee3200Ай бұрын
That is not correct. While it is possible to slip the brakes to vary the turn, the manuals prohibit it as the MB steering units were not designed to be used like this.

That's sort of a MkV/1 (Australian) Centurion. It has the .50 cal ranging gun and .30 Cal Browning Co Ax, long range fuel tank but the front armour has not been upgraded. An Unusual beast! It probably never served in Vietnam due to the lack of the latter modification. There is great variation in Australian Centurions due to losses in Vietnam, and this could be a turret from a written off tank mated to a hull of a MkV, probably issued to a Reserve unit. The Australians also bought Cents from New Zealand and Hong Kong to be cannibalised to replace Vietnam casualties.

One of the most effective HE rounds used from WWII on was High-Explosive Squash Head (HESH, called High-Explosive Plastic (HEP) by the US Army which also used it after WWII). It used a large base-fuzed, soft-nosed shell packed with C-4 plastic explosive and had enormous concussion effect, allowing it to be really effective against various fortifications. Against a solid plate of RHA-type steel up to about 1.2 times the projectile's diameter hit directly on its surface at up to a 60-degree angle (from right-angles), it could spall chunks of armor from the back of the plate that acted like solid shot penetrations, even with no hole in the plate. At up to about half-caliber armor, it could blow a hole big enough to crawl through into the armor, tearing lightly-armored vehicles apart (no joke!). However, if anything caused the warhead to detonate before it hit the main armor, the blast effect would occur, but the spalling effect would not, so vehicles with thicker armor were safe from penetration, though not from all of the other bad effects of the hit. Those large storage bins on the turret of the Centurion would stop the HESH armor-penetration penetration effects, which is probably why they were put there, even though no other nation used these in the same way.

compulsive viewing, thanks Nicholas-saw these in action in Vietnam in 1970-formidable weapons-much preferred by the crews over the M113 APC, which was very vulnerable to enemy fire. Bovington have a very impressive collection of armour of course -including the "cut in half" Centurion, it can't have been pleasant in the hot humid climate of South East Asia inside one of these. As you would know canister shot was very effectively used in this theatre of war-not sure what it meant for increased barrel wear though? thanks again for your well researched and interesting tutorials.
@markfryer98806 жыл бұрын
Canister shot was well used on several operations to clear vegetation from VC/NVA bunkers and to be followed up with a HE round and crushing of the bunker by the Centurion. The Centurion also had the advantage over the M113 in being able to crush its way through thick jungle. When damaged by mines the components could be unbolted and field repaired/swapped out on a Centurion whereas the same damage to a US tank would be deemed a write off.

Well, the so-called MONO-trailer was NOT universally dispensed with. In the late 1970s, when I had the privilege of being a TC on a Dutch Centurion, the mono-trailer was very much still in use and present in the standard equipment of each and every Centurion MK5/2 as present. The contraption came with TC fired disengagement charges, which when fired would detach the mono-trailer through explosive methods, which when performed when partially loaded over preferably enemy emplacements or fortifications would provide an additional firepower of the high-octane fuel going spherical. In theory at least.

Huge machines with dozens of double wheels on multiple axles, and racks and racks of spare wheels. All the steelwork was not mild steel sheet but hugely thick cast iron. My brother when he worked for the MOD had a chance to drive one and said it was impossible and that it must take years to master this Beast. why did we use a coax MG in German 7,9 Mauser caliber and not .303 British?

The Rolls Royce meteor...was it not a de-tuned version of the RR Merlin of spitfire and co fame?
@markfryer98806 жыл бұрын
Basically the answer is yes. Fitted with a governor and minus the single or two stage turbo superchargers fitted when built as a Merlin.

It does beg the question, what a Centurion would have been like with a turbo fitted. The road and off road speed would have been impressive almost like Leopard 1

Funnily enough the truck that transported the centurion used a shortened v8 version of the Merlin.

@@markfryer9880 i think it was the mk9 spitfire that had the 2 stage supercharger,,,this mod was in answer to spitfire mk5's meeting the fw190 which outclassed the spits, however after a German pilot got lost and landed his fw190 in south wales that the boffins from RR developed the engine (the spitfire's) with a 2 stage super charger which had the increase in power (mk 9's had 4 blade prop too) more than enough to match the Fw190.........and yes Mark Fryer, can you imagine the performance if it had an unrestricted full power mk 9 spitfire Merlin? i wonder if it was ever tried?
