When my grandfather was in the Belgian army, he had to ferry M47's from one side of the base of Leopoldsburg to the other. For this this he had to cross a public road. As he crosses the road with the third tank, a impact happens to the side of the tank. He was a bit shocked as he believed he hitted the traffic light pole. Or the track snapped off. As he exited the tank, he found out a 2CV car had ignored the traffic blockade and MP and drove straight into the side of the tank. The occupants were............not alive. Inside the remains they found dozens of empty bottles of beer and the couple were known public drinkers.He never forgot that day...

@@codyparker679 My grandfather was stationed in Germany in the 60s and was watching a bunch of M60s with swamp tracks crossing an intersection going downhill. MP halted traffic as the column of tanks moved through but one driver got impatient and thought he could make it through the column... The result was that his entire vehicle with 3 or 4 people was completely flattened by an M60 tank. Lesson: Don't try to drive through tanks.

One of my happiest boyhood memories is of my Dad and I going to the movies to see the double feature; "Battle of the Bulge" and "Patton." The first movie featured Spanish Army M47s and M24s playing the parts of the German and American tanks, respectively. So awesome!

Combat was my favorite T V show growing up. I laugh when I see U.S Halftracks and M41 Walker Bulldogs as Germans armor vehicles. Same with the movies Battle of the Bulge and Patton. Loved them all!!.

My Dad was Staff Sargent in the USMC 3 Div. Motor Transport ( motor pool ) aka ( garage mechanic ) for any civilian reading this . My Mom and I would go to his Quonset hut to pick him up on weekends but he always showed me what he and his crew was working on . At any given time there was a different tank they'd have in the shop . The Patton's where my favorite .

I was a tank driver/gunner in Germany from 1987 to 1988. On our moter pool we had a M 47 they were cleaning up for display. I would walk up and look it over when ever I had the time. Very cool looking tank.

My coolest experience with tanks was when I was in basic training in the Army at Fort Knox we were Road marching down a road to the training ranges when all of a sudden we heard a high pitched whine and a platoon of M1 Abrams came over the hill and then split off on the sides of the road we were marching on to be that close to walking past those big things was really cool

We used the M47 for targets in the mid 70's, the 105mm heat would go through it with no problem. After 4-5 hits the turret roof would blow off some of them.

The military is not known for cost-consciousness. Think of all the brand new tanks and planes they bulldozed and sunk in the ocean in 1945-46. At least in that case it would have actually cost more to bring them home.

The rain guard looks like it's for when the turret is facing forward or 180 and the front hatches are open. So that water running down the turret doesn't just pour in through the open hatch and on to the driver's head.

The M47 was in American service with 1st & 2nd Armoured Divisions in summer 1952. All 7 Marine Corps Tank Battalions until the M103. After the M48 was available the M47 was put in reserve forces as "limited stardard" use & sold off after 1955. America never used it in combat.

My favourite toy as a kid was a huge toy Patton tank :) I loved my army stuff, I had toy British paras, us marines and Japanese soldiers (which were my favorite, I liked their bayonets) But my big Patton tank was my favourite, I had a huge Willys jeep I loved too Now I'm a grown man I love scale models and actual militaria, but I've still got my toy Patton and jeep in my garage

When I think of the word "Tank," this (Actually the M60) is the basic shape I have in my head. This is pretty much the average tank in my mind, probably because of my generation. (I grew up in the 70s, and 80s) Just for an example of how iconic the M47-through-M60 line are, Arnold Schwarzenegger bought the one he used in the Austrian Army in the 60s. AFAIK, it's still in running condition.

Note: When you put a grid of holes or slots in an armor plate, it obviously reduces its strength against projectiles trying to punch through it. For a battleship deck with a plate with such holes to let uptake smoke out, tests showed that the plate was only about 40% as strong as a solid plate of the same thickness (it also weighed only about 50% as much as a solid plate, so even with a weight measure, it was still somewhat weaker). With the large slots in the upper rear hull of the M47 tank, I would think that the loss would be more, possibly only 30% as strong as a plate of that total thickness. My data does not seem to show any difference in the effects of sloping these punctured plates compared to solid plates. Note that the S-tank cross-bars on its extremely-sloped 75-degree upper front hull were not to stop projectiles themselves, but to cause them to hit 2 or 3 of these armor chunks again and again when the tank was hit by near-horizontal fire from the frontal arc before finally reaching the 40mm 75-degree-sloped top plate. Such extremely-sloped impacts would wreck thin-walled HESH/HEP and HEAT rounds and make them virtually useless against that upper hull, while causing the nose of AP/APC and HVAP/APCR/APDS rounds to tilt upward somewhat, on top of knocking off any AP cap and slowing the projectile somewhat, which would further degrade their penetration through the 40mm plate. Those bars would also have some limited degradation effect against APFSDS rounds to destroy part of their nose and forward body material so that the rounds could not move as far into the 40mm armor before melting totally away (deflecting APFSDS rounds is usually not very effective since the nose simply dissolves under high pressure and the body continues in a straight line). As APFSDS and top-attack HEAT missiles (firing downward as they pass overhead) became more common, the armor on the S-tank became less effective, so this is one of the reasons they were finally retired.

The cross bars on S tanks also helped keep small arms fire and shell fragments from deflecting off the armor into the optics and viewing ports, if any.

One of the theme I am noticing about the American vehicles is that they had shorter service times compared to British tanks. As soon as one tank was developed, another one would start being developed. The M24 Chaffee and M26 Pershing are great examples. M26 only served in the last months of WW2 and early Korean War. Same with the M24 Chaffee. British tanks such as Churchill and Centurion served much longer times. Churchill served for 5 years(1941-1945) while Centurion served throughout majority of the Cold War.

I think even in the modern era they could benefit from quick detach trailers for tanks. Not for fuel but for stuff. Not essential stuff either but stuff you might want to bring with you such as extra food or maybe some extra ammo for deeper missions or something. It would probably work okay when you're driving down the road just crossing the country, and it would increase the overall fuel efficiency of the army. BUT if you ran into contact the commander could press a button that would detach the trailer somehow either by explosives or releasing a hook or something like that so the tank could ditch it and go into combat mode instantly. This is also why you wouldn't want to bring anything too valuable in them as they could be destroyed in the cross fire. Idk just a thought.

Funny when I 1st got to Ft Lewis in April 2002 I was in 1st Battalion 33rd Armored Regiment as a Scout. Shortly after my arrival as 1st Brigade 25th Infantry Division was transitioning to the Stryker we were reflagged to 2nd Squadron 14th Cavalry Regiment and we were the RSTA (Recon Surveillance and Target Acquisition) Squadron for 1st BDE 25th ID.

Used to know a guy that had a suburban suv from the 70s. Said it got 7mpg whether or not he had a full trailer attached so he was almost always hauling something. Increasing the cargo moved per gallon was the only efficiency increase that monster was physically capable of so i understand why the army wanted to use the trailers with tanks. Even if they didnt haul fuel it saved a truck having to use fuel to do the same amount of chemical work already being done in the tanks engine. A slight efficiency boost on paper but having a trailer that can accommodate double the usual amount of infantry tanks can bear could absolutely be of benefit in the right circumstances. I think the problem came from trying the idea during a war centered around mountains and other broken terrain. I wouldve just made the trailers with CV joints at the hookups and a second set of wheels above the first set so the trailer could roll when empty and be able to still be pulled afterwards. A tank wouldnt struggle to drag an upside down trailer but itll break that equipment.

My father used this tank in Cyprus Peace Act 1974, he said there was 5 people in the tank and he was the gunner and the control pannel is very tricky because there are 24 things to be done right for firing.

M47 Patton rainguards. Looking at the placement of them, and the turret's angles, it would seem like the fore-mounted ones are to keep the turret to act like a big rain collector dumping the load onto the driver's and hull-gunner's hatch. Why? Even if the hatches are closed and won't leak, the water might splash over/in front of the periscopes.

A pintle hitch for a trailer, be it fuel, ammo, gear or a water buffalo may not be essential in combat operations but it may come in handy if you have to bug out of an area and those assets would otherwise fall into enemy hands because their normal prime movers are deadlined/destroyed.

Consider this: the theme which he plays in the background repeats its musical material every 60 seconds. It never changes chords (based off of a pentatonic guitar riff). Therefore, in this video alone you're forced to hear that theme at least 14 times. Watch part 2 and you've heard the same theme another 14-15 times. Decide to watch another of the videos, and now you've spent the better part of an hour listening to 60 seconds of music on repeat.

Using right-angles as zero, the net angle of slope of an armor plate is COSINE(Slope) = COS(Vert Slope) x COS(Horiz slope). Take the ARCCOS of COS(Slope) and you have the true angle..

lol I have been watching these & it got me wondering if you could just buy a tank. Sure enough, you can. If you want a functional gun, it requires the associated licenses etc but apparently that can be done in the US. If you are happy with a decommissioned cannon, it looks like a cash & carry kinda deal. lol They cost more than my house so I won't be buying one anytime soon but, if you got the cash, you could buy a tank to cruise around on your ranch & crush old cars. lol I assume if you have cash for a tank, you already have a nice ranch to drive it on. Why does he read the unit markings as division, battalion, regiment, when appears to be written division, regiment, battalion? I seem to recall, but cannot cite hearing veterans discuss their unit history as battalion then regiment, rather than regiment then battalion. Judging by his cadence, I suspect he reads the lower unit markings as company, tank, platoon for illustrative purposes.

Sorry Sir, In regards to bumper numbers I believe you meant to say, “C-24 3rd battalion 33rd brigade/regiment of the 1st Infantry Division!” Because Infantry is the best(according to them) a square is rarely used. David Reuth except all 3 Bns 33 AR were part of the 3AD, not 1 ID. The bumper numbering scheme used at that time was strictly higher to lower, so it is in fact 3AD, 33D AR Regt, 1st Bn., Co C, 2d Plt, Tank Section 4
