I am a US Navy Veteran. Being from where the USS Little Rock is today, I’ve had the opportunity to do service on the great ship, along with Battleship New Jersey (BB-62), Destroyer USS The Sullivans (DD-537), and Submarine USS Croaker (SS-246). An ancestor of mine served on the Little Rock back in the 1950’s and 60’s, so I have bragging rights to having family essence in the ship. I have also toured and seen other museum ships at various locations, including (all have USS); Constellation, Torsk, Bowfin, Growler, Intrepid, Missouri, Yorktown, Laffey, Niagara, Lynx, Olympia, Becuna. But none to me can compare to the Little Rock. Long live the sole survivor of the Cleveland Class!

Not as special as the North Carolina. North Carolina fought through the thick of every major battle in WW 2 and then took a torpedo hit and then she went on to protect the most famous war tested ship the US has ever had in it's History the USS Enterprises and shot down almost 20 aircraft with her first battle with THE BiG E!

Yorktown sunk at Midway, so unless you dived to see it the only Yorktown class ship you saw was enterprises(cv-6). Soul survivor of the Yorktown class and because the Japanese didn't know there was more than one Yorktown class ship, it got the name gray ghost.

Myoko has to have been one the most unlucky ships ever. She rammed a friendly cruiser of the same type at Midway, and then got bombed to nearly nothing. She survived, went for repairs, then got trashed again at Bougainville, where she rammed another friendly ship. She got repaired, then was sunk at the battle of Surigao Strait, but not before ramming a friendly ship one last time. Go home Myoko, you drunk.

IJN Myoko took part in the battle of Midway ( pretty much the entire Japanese navy was there) but was not involved in any engagement or combat. You are thinking of heavy cruisers IJN Mogami and IJN Mikuma which collided when trying to dodge a reported American submarine. The Cleveland Class Cruisers actually played an important role in escort of larger ships, shore bombardment and surface engagements in the Pacific during WWII. While the aircraft carriers and battleships got most of the attention for the Navy, the light cruisers were so flexible and capable that their support proved vital to the advancement and attack on Rabaul, the largest Japanese naval and air base in SE Asia. We hear about the battleships that survived Pearl Harbor and were repaired, the Iowa Class battleships that came later and certainly the aircraft carriers that carried the fight over long distances, but the light cruisers were just as important. When we are able to fill out the history of our Navy during WWII it is amazing.

I served 1971-1972 with Vice Admiral Gordon Nagler and a then Lt. and now our current Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus. BTW the most decorated enlisted sailor in US History also served on the USS Little Rock! James E Williams was the most highly decorated enlisted man in the history of the U.S. Navy. On May 14, 1968 the President of the United States, in the name of Congress, presented him the Medal of Honor. I served aboard the USS Oklahoma City CLG5 and USS Providence CLG6 in the early sixties. I have visited the USS Little Rock in Buffalo once and plan to visit it again before I get too old. The battle ships, carriers and destroyers get all the accolades from WWII. I don't remember ever seeing but one war movie with a cruiser in it and that was "In Harms Way" and it was a heavy cruiser, the USS Saint Paul CA73.

A error or two, the Talos missile system wasn't a cruse missile, but a ramjet missile with a solid rocket booster that was the largest surface to air system ever deployed by the USN. They where used to good effect in Vietnam and reportedly chased one MIG under a bridge before intercepting it's target. The Talos was designed to deal with Soviet bomber formations and had a interesting fragmentation pattern and a powerful nuclear warhead option. The 6" guns where completely worn out during the Vietnam war and when our crew from the USS Ajax star-gauged (measured barrel wear) of the USS Oklahoma City my unofficial report was " what the hell do you do, wrap the projectile with duct tape to get any kind of seal?" The barrels where that bad. Excellent ships but really worn out.

Went to Gunnery school in Great Lakes NTC. Green glass building outside. Various weapons systems inside. Then classrooms inside of that. One was the Talos. Then the 5"54 MK45 gun. Used to look up at the talos system and just say to myself "holy crap! That missile is huge!" Had the sparrows on my destroyer and they were tiny compared to by then outdated talos..

We carried Terriers, but I was fortunate enough to watch the Albany shoot a Talos during a live fire exercise, that was just about the coolest missile shot ever, so big, heavy and slow it seemed like it would never get down the rail, it seemed like half of the initial stage burned before the missile even started moving down the rail! Even though the “3 Ts” were the Navy’s first go round of guided missiles in the 60s to the early 70s, they did the job, and did it well! (Talos, Terrier, Tartar) vacuum tube technology!

I was fortunate enough to travel to the U.S. and tour this ship in Buffalo, NY. The ship was impressive for a light cruiser. The ship has been modernized quite a bit over the years, and thankfully the long service life meant there were plenty of crew that served on the ship who now work on the ship as guides. Well worth the trip to see this beauty. Planning on going again.

Note the two bridges - one a top the other - the lower is a flag bridge for an admirals staff. Little Rock served as 6th Fleet flag in the mid 70s home-ported in Gaeta Italy.

i live in Buffalo NY and see her all the time. shes a wonderful ship, but shes in really bad shape and needs more visitors to get the money to fix her. i actually work on her with a friend of mine who does reenacting work and runs a mini museum in her. its a wonderful time plus you get to see the USS sulivans (fletcher class DD) and the USS croaker (a sub of some type). she actually took on a lot of water last winter due to a breach in the hull, but it was patched and drained luckily. wonderful video and raises awareness for this old girl. anyone heading to buffalo should take an afternoon and check her out with the other ships.

William Rost . I've visited her many times in the past. Sometimes I was returning from a USN reunion and was an additional thrill. Served with a sailor as i recall who was transferred From CLG 4 to CG 10. live just East of the Toronto city line. If your from the golden horseshoe area on either side of the border this is a great place to visit and a treat in my opinion. Visited many USN museum ships down the east coast and over into Alabama and Loisiana. These ships require a lot of volunteer effort to maintain, without them maybe they wouldn't survive due to the $$$$$$$ cost to keep them floating or in good repair.

My Grandad was stationed in the Philly ship yards during the war and help build the Little Rock. My Dad served on the Rock in the mid 60's. I was able to stop by and visit the ship about 5 yrs ago. Thats 3 generations thats been on that ship. Dad always bragging that his ship was the only one not turned into razor blades.LOL

Naval battles in the Pacific against the Japanese Imperial Fleet were bloody and deadly. Cruisers, destroyers, destroyer escorts were the class of ships that were right in the middle of the fight. They faced fire from every direction including from above. Their crews fought bravely and valiently. As a proud U.S. NAVY veteran I salute them. I hope I'd have been as brave as they were. ✌🏻🇺🇸

Just read a few months ago James Fahey's PACIFIC WAR DIARY, about his three years on the USS Montpelier, a Cleveland class cruiser. One of the best books I've ever read for giving you an idea of what it was like in the US Navy in WW II. They were crucial in use as bombardment ships. Fahey says that the USS Cleveland delivered more ordnance than any other ship in WW II while the USS Montpelier, the ship on which Fahey served, was third. He served in a 40mm quad Bofor for the first half of the war, and a dual Bofor in the second half. Fahey became acquainted with Samuel Eliot Morrison, the author of the 15 volume official history of the US Navy in WW II, when Morison sailed with them for a few months. Just a great book. There is a great photo of the Houston easily found on the Internet being towed to Pearl Harbor. The only reason she survived was because the Pacific was completely calm. You can see the deck of the Houston only a few feet from being awash. Unbelievable that it survived. Just a great class of ships. I think the three most crucial types of ships were the Clevelands, the Fletcher class of destroyers, and the Essex class of carriers.

I was in Buffalo in 2017 for the commissioning of U.S.S. Little Rock LCS-9 I took the day before to tour the Buffalo Navy Park with my dad. Went on all 3 ships. Little Rock, The Sullivan's, and the Croaker. The U.S.S. Little Rock was docked about 75 yards away, and it was awesome to see the new ship, commissioned in the same place her namesake was berthed. I just wish that it was warmer. That day, it was freezing, and snowing.

in 1978 I was assigned to COMSEVENTHFLT STAFF Embarked on USS OKLAHOMA CITY CLG-5. this showed me so much about the navy. knowing what I learned as a RM3 I knew I wanted to reenlist in 1980.

My dad was aboard the USS Houston CL-81 when it was torpedoed in Oct. 1944. He celebrated his 21st birthday on the damaged ship, wondering if he would live to be 22. He was part of the 125 or so that stayed with the ship until it reached the west coast. Orders had been given to abandon ship but he and his buddy Douglas Denny had gone in the water when the Helena CL-50 was sunk in July 1943. They decided that as long as they had something to stand on, they would stay on board. Dad stayed with the ship until it reached the west coast. He took survivors leave then.

I visited the USS Little Rock a few years ago and let me say it is definitely worth the visit because there is also a fletcher class destroyer the USS the Sullivan’s and the Gato class submarine USS Croaker. And for being a very populous state New York only has a few museum ships either those being the ones mentioned above with the destroyed escort the USS Slater in Albany and the Carrier USS intrepid in New York City

The heaviest USN light cruisers were the Worcester class. They were at 18000ton deep load displacement and were essentially huge AA cruisers (12 dual purpose 6"/47cal guns). There were only two completed and they weren't regarded as particularly successful (guns were problematic), but they were the biggest by a large margin.

It was my first time seeing a large warship being canadian the only ww2 war ship I’ve seen was hmsc Haida so seeing Little Rock up close almost knocked me off my feet. I was TALOS Missile Computer Officer on Little Rock 1960-1962. When first commissioned in 1960 she was top heavy. We nearly capsized on our first cruise off Cape Hatteras. Added lots of pig iron which helped stability, but she always had an uncomfortable roll. CLG-4 has a very active veterans association, with annual reunions. See website.

Was just in buffalo for family reunion and visited her and the Sullivans. THe Naval Park has some cool stuff including a M-29 Wiesel and a PTF Nasty class boat, thatr I belive was in the Maddox incident, also a Fletcher.

Tour the Little Rock every couple of years. The talos missiles were giant compared to new tech. Was stationed on Spruance class destroyer so to me the Little Rock was cramped compared to USS John Hancock DD981. Our berthing compartment was more spacious....My gun mount control room was like a small apartment. I give those brave souls respect for what they did and do every day to keep us free.

I served on the USS Oklahoma City CLG -5 Flagsip of the SEVENTHFLT , sister ship to the USS Little Rock. We saw combat action in Vietnam.

The Japanese and US cruisers were very impressive. I like how they say a cruiser taking a torpedo hit is probably going to sink in 15 minutes. Those are Russian standards on naval ships, not other navies.

If you visit Buffalo NY You'll also see the USS Sullivans as well. The ships are in excellent condition and the tour is really great! It took a special treaty exception BTW to display the two ships because Canada and the US decided a long time ago not to militarize or fortify their border and also not to have a naval presence on the great lakes. Unfortunately NY state could not get the USS Rochester or the USS Albany before they were scrapped. And of course we completely missed the boat when the USS New York, sister ship to the USS Texas, was up for scrapping. What a pity!
