House Darklyn Of Duskendale is an ancient house of the crownlands that dates back to the first men and age of heroes. The Rise Of The house to petty kings was followed by there fall into extinction by the time of the main books. Over the Targaryen era of Westeros they had close ties with House Targaryen with a total of seven Darklyn men joining the Kingsguard and Jonquil Drake becoming the sworn shield of Queen Alysanne Targaryen. But after the events of the defiance of duskendale during the reign of Aerys ii The Mad king would bring the line of house darklyn to an end.

My theory is that the Defiance was never the plan. Aerys wanted to do a Rains of Castamere to one up Tywin, he went to Duskendale, ordered Denys’ arrest after a breakdown in negotiations and Denys overreacted, imprisoning the King. It’s the only scenario that makes sense. Either that, or Denys was incredibly stupid and was manipulated by Tywin into killing Aerys.

It always irritated me that in the books there’s still people from House Darke (if it’s really even a house it’s probably more like a small family in a house in Duskendale) and Darkwood are still alive when it’s made clear to us that Aerys II killed everyone with with Darklyn blood in Duskendale (and everywhere else from what we know). They should’ve been wiped out along with the Darklyns & any family near Duskendale with “dark” in their House names. A minor oversight on George which I can understand with all of the lore from ASOIAF but the fact that there was explicitly a character with the name Darke as the steward of the Dunfort that Brienne meets in AFFC always annoyed me bc there’s no way Aerys would’ve let multiple off-shoot branches of a family he wanted to completely annihilate off scott free.

It’s not an oversight. It’s intentional. Aerys couldn’t have killed half the population of Duskendale even if he wanted to. He exterminated the lordly Darklyns going back generations, but the Darklyns had been around for 8,000 years by then. It’s literally impossible to kill every descendant, especially once they have integrated into the smallfolk. Aerys was mad, but not that mad. Also, the castellan of the Dun Fort was Rufus Leek. The Darke you’re thinking about is the washerwoman in the Seven Swords Inn who serviced Brienne.

It's not massively easy but not massively hard ether. The main issue is the filesize of the map is so huge that it makes making any changes kill my hardware and turn it into the sun. But i have gone through and fixed this along with a few other fixes and additions that people have noted. With a lot of the spelling errors, the software lags out and it's easy to miss. You should see the new version of the map in the next week or two.

I still believe the theory that Tywin was behind the Defiance of Duskendale...but the plan went awry. Why would they make such a foolish move? It was the end of their house no matter what... UNLESS they had a deal in place.

@@thalmoragent9344 according to the theory, he did originally plan to replace the And King with Rhaegar. But Rhaegar proved unreliable at the time. As for the Darklings, I don't know what they would get. I assume some token sacrifices (some land, some members sent to the Wall, etc,), lie low for awhile after, and then a pardon when the heat dies down. But that's more speculation on my part because I don't remember what the theory said in regards to that.

Welp... the Defiance of Duskendale was a stupid decision. What were they expecting to happen at the end of the day? Either Aerys escapes and punishes them, or he dies and Rhaegar becomes king, who then alongside his lords would punish them all the same. It's a shame how it all ended for their chill house but.... why?

I back the theory that Tywin was the mastermind behind it as he wanted Aerys out the way. That he had promised House Darklyn immunity from punishment and some kind of reward. Only issue is it was Duskendale that really tipped Aerys over the edge into madness.
