Not a great restoration, the green patina looked better before and would not have compromised the copper. You could have soaked the the pot in water to clean the mud off and only shine the metal on the inside of the pot and lid. You could have done a lot better with the handle too. Solder is not a good substitute for metal. You should have cut some square copper stock and then solder the pieces on.

The Chinese words at the bottom indicate this teapot may be over 2-3 hundred years old, or even been used in the imperial palace during the Ching Dynasty. If it is not fake item, it may worth at least USD 2-30,000, and may be more if it was really used in the imperial palace. But after you sandblasted and polished it and have the handle broken, it may drop its value by an least 80%. No matter what, this teapot should have an age of over 100 years and is an valuable antique of good value and is better for keeping in museum. It is a pity that it has been polished in this way.

@@billchan2295 I totally agree. And the gold paint he added to replace the gold plating on the decorative parts was litterally adding insult to injury. It's one thing to sand blast a rusted old tool or a mid century brass lamp base, but this wasn't a restoration, it was a violation.

Sad thing is, to me it does look like a genuine antique and if so, he totally destroyed it. Not everything is ment to look all shiny and golden. Originally, due to the use of two different metals the pot was of a beautiful dark green adorned with gold coloured monks. This is no coincidence ofcourse so probably the pot was supposed to have that colour, and not all shiny and golden. Then he destroyed the eyes of the handle that were shaped as tiny hands, and shaved away some of the ridges of the handle. My stomach turned. This is in no way to be called a restoration, a restoration should always be conservative without damaging the object. In my opinion a beautiful ancient artifact was destroyed.

I never comment on anything but this is not a restoration. It is like most say destruction of a gorgeous original teapot. After the polish all details and patina are gone for ever. A restoration of an artefact often means cleaning the rough and leaving the patina and aging to it.

I think someone has already noticed the symbols on the bottom of the teapot, which are written in an ancient Chinese script known as 'Seal Script'. These symbols represent four Chinese characters, '乾隆年製', meaning that they were made during the reign of the Qianlong emperor in the Qing dynasty (1735-1796). However, this is unfortunately a recent copy of an ancient Chinese teapot, which is of decorative value but not of much collector's value. The eight figures on the teapot are the eight immortals of traditional Chinese mythology, representing good fortune and happiness. The restorer has fun at the end of the video by putting the tea leaves directly into the teapot, but this is a funny demonstration, not to be followed, as the tea will not taste good.

@ScottAJacob
@ScottAJacob 2 жыл бұрын
Ok, I'm suspicious. Right from the start, a restorationist would not use a crappy wire brush to remove all that loose, dried mud. It would be immersed in water to saturate the dirt and let it fall off with little to no effort. The use of a wire brush was immediately extreme. The revealed green patina was an applied finish MEANT to be there! A restorationist would have known that, and no one, not a single restorationist I have ever known, uses a sand blaster on an "ancient" artifact; Tin toys perhaps if they are extremely rusty, but not certainly antique metal. Removing the original finish and making this piece look like a new piece it wasn't meant to look like just ruined any value on the market it would have had if it had just been washed free of the mud, and left at that. Sorry to be a purist, but that is the definition of "restoration" after all.

Buy a fine teapot in a thriftshop. It's an artificially weathered replica, but still fine. Then roll it in the mud, butcher it with every tool you have, and when you're done call it restoration. The botched brazing was so painful to look at

No, they have never said that about a metal teapot. Usually they say "polish it, patina has no place on a teapot" That is because you can poison yourself

This thing is gaudy after you "restored" it. You could have soaked the mud off and then used a soft brush to clean it and left the patina and gold leafed figures alone. It doesn't matter whether it's 20 or 200 years old, it still looks awful.
@arnoldolorenzo3474
@arnoldolorenzo3474 2 жыл бұрын
This was hardly a “restoration” but instead you ruined it. That is if it even was an “ancient” teapot. If it was, you destroyed it. If it wasn’t, this was click bait.
