I am perplexed at these commenters who insist Saddlebreds are not sored like the Big Lick Walkers., I was very heavy into the saddle horse show world, both 3 and 5 gaited Saddlebreds and Walkers of all kinds, back in the 1960s. I was a junior, and trainers loved show casing juniors for selling their stock. Well! All those horses were very much sored, plus they were hidden behind show curtains at the stables to keep people from seeing those horrid heavy blankets , with high tail set strapped on in 100° heat for hours and hours and hours. Those horses were so miserable and tortured they were dangerous to approach in a stall. At home they remained with long toes, (no stacks) and beads or chains permanently strapped on their patterns during short turn out periods. And in the stalls which they lived in 24/7 unless ridden. Those chains were never removed. Some people didn’t use them to show, mostly the amateur and junior ranks, but the open and professionals sure did, Nothing to defend the Big Lick Walkers - that is just a whole abomination. But you are deluded or spinning a tale if you insist these Saddlebreds are treated without untold misery,

A Saddlebred without a set tail will not pin. A Saddlebred without weighted shows will not pin. No Saddlebred has that high of an action without the weighted shoes and the stretchies in training. No, in my experience, their legs are not rubbed with toxic chemicals. But there is nothing natural about the gaits presented. And the fact that none of the of the riders can barely stay in the saddle just goes to show that these horses are not trained at saddle horses at all. The meaning of Saddle Horse was a horse that was comfortable to ride for long periods of time.

Okay, so I gotta say this looks really weird to me, sometimes even horrific. I have a couple questions about saddle seat riding, because it seems to be the polar opposite to a bunch of principles I've been taught about riding horses... 1. Why are the horse all walking so hollow? This probably bugs me the most. It looks like saddleseat riders ride their horses with an extremely hollow back and scary ewe necks. Why? Where does the horse carry their rider's weight? How smooth are your horses neck and back and stomach muscles? Cause if I'd ride one of the ponies I know in this position they'd become extremely tense and develop back problems with this hollow frame... So why do you do this and where do the horses carry the wight then and what about long term problems if they're being ridden like that for 20+ years? 2. Why are the riders often sitting so far back? Granted, I've seen this point executed way worse than in this video but I still gotta wonder. I learnt that the lower part of a horse's spine is quite sensetive when it comes to weight, meaning I've been taught to never put a saddle or rider weight there. Why do some saddle seat riders sit on this very sensitive part? I've heard before that it is supposedly to allow the shoulders to move freely but this works with other well fitted saddles as well that don't sit so far back on the horse's back. Again, not really in this video but I see it a lot in saddle seat videos or photos. 3. Are the tails nicked? From what I read in several sources it seems still common in the US for these shows and this breed in particular and when I look up (young) saddlebreds in the pasture they seem to have a more normal tail carriage than this. I'm going to be honest, nicking tails is disgusting. I'm glad it's banned under animal cruelty where I live and in many other countries. Shame that this is still not recognized as an act of animal cruelty in the US. 4. Why do the riders sit like this? How does this seat help and benefit the horse's movement? Same for the hight hands? Why? You can also see a couple times where the riders yank on these massive shank bits and... yikes. I'd love actual studies in particular if someone has these that examine the (longterm) effects of the hollow frame and weight placement in this particular style of riding versus others, but I couldnt find any. Now, if any friends of saddleseat riding that say this is all good and has it's reasons could provide some to prove their point that would be grant.

the saddles are further back because the horses shoulders are different than the ponies shoulders you ride and the horse naturally carries its head higher because of its shoulder. in order for the horse to be able to preform this gait, which is natural, it has to lift its shoulders. if the saddle is more forward then the saddle sits on the horses shoulders it can actually cause pain. more explained in the second video. 2 yr old in pasture not being asked to preform. is also unfit on uneven ground. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXKleniLjpqkg5Y how to fit a gaited saddle on a horse kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn_Cc4OJo5J8d7c for the tails. some are cut. it is not normal and usually done by unscrupulous individuals when done for competitive purposes. tail nicking is a veterinary procedure done by a veterinarian. the horse retains all ability to use its tail when set and after it is let down. its probably most comparable to wearing braces or retainers but not finishing the treatment and letting your teeth go back the way they were.

To the people in the comments saying how these horses are "sorn" you cannot sore a high trotting breed that naturally picks up it's hooves, and the saddle bred horse will be bred either as a show horse which is in the video, or a sport horse that can be used for show jumping, hunt seat, dressage and more since this is a very flexible and smart breed, as, it may not have the skill to pick up its hooves as high for the saddle seat discipline. Just like an NBA football player compared to a high school kid on the football team, the skill and training levels are on different levels. Do not confuse the saddle seat for "big lick." That abusive "hobby" makes saddle seat look bad, of course every discipline can be abusive in their own ways if not done right. I'm sorry to inform you, but your ignorance is showing. American Saddlebreds have been bred for high action like this. The breed originated partly because of people's desire for a fancy, showy riding horse. They are kept with slightly longer feet, as are most ssddleseat horses, but they are not made sore. If they have something on their front feet, it's bell boots...rubber circles that are attached with velcro & are not tight. They are merely protection for the front feet in case the horse reaches too far forward & clips his front feet with his back ones. Which sometimes happens...overreach like that is part of what makes a smooth gait. Don't confuse Saddlebreds with "Big Lick" Tennessee Walkers.

@Nej Bk American Saddlebred, Rocky Mountain Pony, Paso Peruano, Paso Fino, Icelandic horse, Aegidienberger, and many more belong to the group of gaited horses. In the medieval times, there were tons of gaited horses in Europe, later they were not useful in the army and before the carrige. There are further horse breeds which sometimes show a gait and thus can be trained: Trotter, Fjord ponies, Frisian horses,.... All these horses have an additional gait which can be trained just like any other gait in dressage. The Tennesee Walking Horse belongs to the gaited horses. But the "gait" is different between the different races and the TWH is born with a very flat gait (opposite to Paso Finos, Icelandic horses or ASB). Big Lick is an abusive way to make them look like a ridduculous ASB . I also agree that on high level there is bad behaviour in an any sport and I see some things in that video which I don't like. I am speaking about hard hands with sharp bits like in the vid or at dressage horse auctions to give them impressive movement though stress, or Rollkur which sadly even got into the Lippizan School since the Austrian goverment stopped they support and they have to make profit. But the accusation that horses of gaited breeds can only gait if they are abused, is very wrong. Here a video from an icelandic horse compition (actually the WC in Austria) in a class where they need to prove that they can tölt they horse without reins. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2HEZ3atj9Sam7c

And the big lick says you can't get a high steper without stacks...yeah ok, saddle seat get you the same thing, always have for me and it's all done through training, time and patience not a 5lb lead block, not sure if they changed that much either, they also don't need to shackle their horses either which is just heavy chains on the fetlocks usually in the front during shows, out of shows I've seen them used on the back as well. And no its not abusive because there's no draconian contraptions and ungodly hoof shaving to an unnatural shape, costic liquids like kerosene, diesel, mustard oil ect used, then wrapped to make it stay in place. This way is the humane way of showing a beautiful animal, and yes saddle seat horses are treated like royals, least all the ones I know are, the shoes saddle seat has are in proportion to their weight, the shoe for saddle seat would be lighter then your sneeker is to you, if the sneeker was in proportion to you. These shoes maybe slightly higher and heavier then your normal shoe but this unlike the stack doe NOT change the hoof shape, cause skeletal problems, any show horse that showes allover is mostly never out to pasture, especially these horses because the shoes are slightly heavier and thicker, the damage that were to be done isn't worth the risk. This does not mean their stalls are cramped by any means, they live just as good as the owners do, they don't live in some dark dingy stall brought out just to parade, the stalls on the ones I know come with fully functional windows that can be opened, door with a dip in the middle, metal trimming, high quality wood, heating, lights, AC, I'm talking the whole nine yards as for exercise ring work and training. If one was to tell me this is no better then the big lick I'd laugh, cause the other big thing the big lock does that saddle seat doesn't is cut or nick the tendons of the tail to achieve the look.

@@anonamasnoname9098 I've seen Saddlebreds being worked and they really work up a sweat just trotting around. Not to mention that their trot has different speeds and they are expected to keep it up both direction. It really depends on the class they are in 3 gaited I doubt they would sweat much but in a 5 gaited, there's more going into their work. They exert more energy because of how high their legs have to lift. Not to mention that they are most likely sprayed with ShowSheen to make their coats look shinier and the sweat is probably making it have a more exaggerated look.
