Sago Street (one street over next to the Buddha's Tooth Temple) was known for its opium dens and what people used to call "death houses" - undertakers, coffin makers, funeral houses, where the poor or chronically ill went to live out their last days. There were also sago (old-time staple food made from the sago palm, seen as sago pearls today) factories located in the area, hence the name.

Hello there 👋🏼 thanks for this awesome information about Sago Street. So much history in this area and as you have stated, some of it is grim. This is what I love about Singapore, so much history around every corner ☺️

The oldest mosque in singapore is Masjid Omar Kampong Melaka off Havelock Road . It’s 7 years old than Masjid Chulia . The mural is that of Chinese Opera performers - they used to be perform in public open air theatres back in the day and they still do them now during the Hungry Ghost Festival .

Hello there 👋🏼 and thanks for that great information. You seem to be well informed about the history of Singapore. Very impressive ☺️

It would be embarrassing to be Singaporean and not know the basic facts about one’s own country. And all that information is easy to corroborate with a simple google search. It just depends how keen one is to make sure that the information they’re putting out there is accurate.

@@susethupathi4668 you raise an interesting point. Because some prominent Singaporean websites also have differing views. But that is not for me to debate or rectify. I’m just a tourist learning about your great country ☺️

Haha of course there's something for us middle-aged men - just go to the Chinese "medical halls' called sinseh for Chinese medicated plasters and balms ... and of course, plenty of massage (sterile or otherwise) parlours there as you've noted.

Those in the queue for Tian Tian are getting a lousy chicken rice . Tong Fong Fatt chicken rice or maybe others at Maxwell food centre are better

Hello there 👋🏼 I’m no foody so i can’t distinguish between a good and bad chicken rice. Can you tell me what to look out for when buying a good chicken rice?
@bensgoodeats149314 күн бұрын
@ If you want to try a good chicken rice in Singapore just go to B1-35 Golden Mile food centre . At least a plate of chicken rice should come with soup which Tian Tian does not have . Tian Tian chicken a bit dry for me. Chicken has to be juicy with skin.
