Hmm, the controller issue you were having at the start seemed similar to an issue I was having with mine, it'd randomly stop tracking. It ended up being an issue with the battery connection, I was able to open it up and reseat the connection fairly easily. There's an iFixit page on it, in case it happens to you again in the future. Seems like with newer Vive controllers they started cheaping out on that part and instead of fixing the connections with a metal bracket, started using tape instead.
