You should put up one of the new 4k home security cameras in your shop and have it recording on a 12hr loop, so that you always have time lapse material for portions of builds you don't think to film👍 If you are ambitious build a workflow to automatically generate time lapses of the last 12hrs with the press of a big red button in the shop😂

Two cameras, just incase one angle obscured. 2x the chances of getting some good b-roll, or time-lapse video. (alternatively a couple of strategic placed GoPro mounts (so don't have to rad the foam budget new equipment)

Did you know that extruded aluminium foil masts for kite surfing can be quite inexpensive if you look around? They cost around $100 for 90cm, half of that if you order from China. It would save you a lot of trouble to just buy a few of those and it would be stronger, stiffer, lower drag and in the end probably less expensive too, as you will find that a foil mast must not only be strong, it also needs to be very stiff if you want it to be controllable. If you make it from composite you will need around 10 layers of carbon, half unidirectional, the other half at 45 degrees to resist torsion.
@AntiVaganza
@AntiVaganza Жыл бұрын
I agree on the need for some more structural stiffness on the strut/mast for the foil. Reminds me of when the Swedish RC guy 3D printed one for his foiling surfboard and was surprised it didn't hold up at all. Good idea to perhaps just buy this part.

Appreciate seeing bits of process used going from CAD design to full-foam-formed concept. Nice job recycling an efficient land cruiser (1:45) into a future hydrofoil vehicle. Maximizing the milage of your foam supplies. The bonus GEV concept looks great. Not sure if placing motors behind where an optional pilot might be seated is ideal. Partially because of air-wake turbulence, and partially having 4-6 propellers spinning directly behind a pilot. For brainstorming ideas, you might consider what paraglider pilots are doing with electric motors. Larger propeller should help with efficiency, reduce complexity and an added shroud would add a safety element. From video editing standpoint, some creativity could aid a visual transitions between major segments, like the bonus section. A simple reusable graphic would be enough, should time budget allow.

Hey! Sweet project. Manned foils are both the most amazing thing ever and a massive nightmare. As another commenter mentioned, using existing aluminum extruded parts is probably your best option. For struts, the 19mm aluminum masts made my Axis foils are a good option with a nice airfoil, low price, and high stiffness. The lifting wings will be harder. Ideally you will want an asymmetric section. The wing sizing and section choice are very important and will depend on how you build the wings. Happy to suggest some sections in a private message. A symmetrical section for the stabilizer is a good choice. I would start with an oversized tail surface(s) as they will make takeoff and stall more manageable. A very narrow hull is generally best for takeoff on foils. The foils have a large damping effect and massively increase the stability of the boat. Excited as always to watch your projects come to life!

Just a few thoughts on epoxy and West;) You might have been tongue in cheek commenting that it's great for marine use. Makes sense as it was developed by the Gougeon boat building brothers. It's famous, easy to work with and over priced for what it is - a 1st gen epoxy more or less. Others are more advanced, take post curing better, and can be had cheaper. But for small projects (and big if you don't mind the price), West does do well. The pump system is genious in its simplicity. And the whole eco system of fillers from the same brand makes it easy to get what you need. But yeah, it's too expensive. What I really respect about the brand is the early work the Gougeons did and how much they shared in terms of how to work with epoxy. They really were trail blazers. And most of that info is still out there for free and there's a ton to learn from it. No matter what system/brand you end up using, I think most people who built structural parts w. epoxy should read "The Gougeon Brothers on Boat Construction". It's downloadable, just search for it. (Also, don't wanna be a downer, but I do hope the struts and foils are gonna be beefed up substantially. The loads with you in it aren't neglible) Oh, congrats on the printer. Soon you will be in that rabbithole of thinking you need bigger and fast, perhaps a tall delta or a fast HVORT or similar;)

Great job! When I was having a discussion with ChatGPT, it suggested that an ahedral would be very beneficial to a WIG, and it cited "Nakamura 2004" pointing to a 12º anhedral being optimal. Funny enough, it's also the direction taken with Lippisch-style WIGs.

Amazing skills with fiberglass, foam and wood. Some of the helpful tings like using the cutout from the wing as a holder for the wing when you are routering out the holes should be explained more. Another thing first-timers are stuck with is the settings to make a brushless motor work with the controller. These motors look easier. Show us every step to set them up please.
