What I liked? 1 - NO cheezy Star Wars theme music, or other such crap. 2 - No talking to interrupt the show sound. 3 - Most importantly, you captured the whistle sound that is unique to the Mustang. Behind enemy lines, that sound was often the first thing that was heard before all hell broke loose. And for many, that was the LAST thing that was ever heard! Good Job! :-)

Thank you for posting this. My grandpa Walker, William Walker flew this plane in the US Army Air Corps (before the airforce) in WWII over Eastern Europe. He told me a few stories of him getting into some stressful situations and dog fights with very skilled German pilots. I am so thankful that he made it to the last squadron reunion to see some of his old comrades that flew along side him just before he passed away in 2015. To this day I think this plane is one of the fastest if not the fastest prop planes in existence. The P-51 Mustang had a top speed of 437 mph which is fast even for today's prop planes.

I wish my father could have seen this video, but he died 18 years ago. He was a Ranger/Scout in WW II. Operated behind enemy lines sometimes, saw lots of action, D-Day, Battle of The Bulge, Hurtgen Forrest etc. He probably saw many Mustangs just like this. I should have paid more attention to his stories. Thanks for making me think of him. Thanks to you and the people who restored this aircraft for preserving a little bit of our history. Sorry, I'm getting a little emotional now.
@Xrm15010 жыл бұрын
guyfihi I thank you and your father for his service! I bet you could do a little research and find out what squad/unit he was with. With that info you might find others who were in it and might be able to find them on Facebook or some other form of social media. Heck...the unit/squad might have its own Facebook page itself.

Xrm150 That is a good idea, I think one of my brothers or sisters might have his discharge papers. I am a Viet Nam vet myself, but I didn't see much action because I was in the Navy, although we did get shot at a few times. When I got out people didn't honor the vets like they do now, so at least that part has changed.

What a gorgeous airplane! I once saw Chuck Yeager fly his WWII P-51 along with a wingman of similar vintage, chasing each other at incredible speeds and g-loads around Whitman Field at Oshkosh, WI. The airshow announcer said the airplanes were together 110 years old and the pilots 150. Yeager was 75 at the time; I saw him hop out of the P-51 cockpit like a 25-year-old. forget something in the cock[it and hop back in with admirable agility . A few years later I watched a dozen P-51s rev up in front of the crowd at the EAA convention at Oshkosh, the roar of those 1500 HP Rolls-Royce engines a beautiful choir. Later I walked past the P-52 parking area and saw polished aluminum wings and bodies in the light of sunset, gleaming gold. I'm in love!

Beautiful. It's well named because it looks like watching a horse at full gallop- poetry in motion and with the addition of a symphony of sound. +Mario John the way it should be =)
@wingmanjim65 жыл бұрын
It's not the "cooler", it is the inner two gun ports. In D/K Mustangs, these two guns were mounted further aft than the other four, necessitating a long blast tube between the barrel muzzle and leadig edge. Think of it as a pipe organ. If the Mustang has had the ports removed or faired over, or the blast tube removed, the sound is not present, nor is it evident on the four gun B/C models.

What a beautiful airplane. According to a video here of famed fighter pilot Robin Olds, the government was selling off P-51’s to individuals after WWII for a little over $1,000 ... that’s about $15,000 in today’s dollars. Can you imagine owning your own Mustang for 15 grand? (Of course, good luck affording the maintenance. lol) My 2017 Ford Mustang convertible cost twice that much, and while it’s fun to drive, it won’t do an eight-point roll. :-) Thanks for the great video.

The pilot, Lee Lauderback has more hours than anyone in the world in the Mustang. He is known worldwide as the go to source for P-51 piloting, systems, training & safety. As much as I am a fan of PWags & Julie (I have met Patty actually at a function that Lee had at his house), no one can fly the Mustang quite like Lee. Patty has flown the Mustang before, to which extent I cannot speak. This is a trainer conversion of the '51, and thus has no gun ports. The whistle is caused by airflow through the radiator/oil cooler scoop exiting the rear vent. The amount of/lack of whistle is dependent upon the vent's position. The Corsair and Bearcat whistle as well- also due to airflow through the oil cooler ducts located in the wing roots.
