Worlds Leading Mushroom Expert Explains Wild Mushrooms- Alan Rockefeller

In this video, on a series of videos by Mushroom Wonderland titled "Foraging Wild Mushrooms with a Mycologist," Aaron Hilliard- Creator, Mycologist, and VP of the local Mycological Society follows Alan Rockefeller around and documents a foray where Alan describes a bunch of different wild mushrooms and their uses and everything about them. He also shows us how to take stunning, world class photography, of the mushrooms.
It has been an honor to work with Alan and get to show off what he does, here on Mushroom Wonderland, and we are forever grateful for his contributions to the mycological community. He is very selfless and willing to share his knowledge with everyone. Thanks Alan.

exactly what happened to me. I've been getting obsessed with gourmet mushroom growing and all things mushroom and as I am subbed to Tony's channel youtube thought it would be a good idea to recommend me that video. immediately loved the guy and it's still my favorite mushroom video I've watched so far on the platform. It really rocketed my interest from the fun hobby of growing mushrooms into a full obsession with mycology.

As an avid and addictive mushroom hunter here in Santa Cruz county California. I love watching Alan and his patients when he has a tons of people around him. I always want to take friends with me hunting but it’s more of a distraction and an annoyance than company. I think when you’re really into mushroom foraging you really love the solitude of it. Lol.

Alan!! You and Stephan Axford (time lapse Australian mushroom dude) are both my most favorite fungi chasers on KZbin! You both have such a self assured calm presence about you. I have picked several hundreds of pounds of psilocybe cubensis, panaeolus cyanescens and gymnopilus in southern mississippi throughout my life. Me being a city boy, i was tought how to identify the different species with knowledge passed down through generations of " rednecks". They all had large properties with cows, horses and donkeys..

You guys lucked out having a smaller group, I was so excited today to go on a mushroom walk with Alan in Arcata,CA and learn about my local mushrooms, but there was so many people, and half of them were in there own little group talking about what they did over the weekend and having loud conversations about other things and the other half trying to get as close as they can to Alan that I left 10min in and went on my own hunt, very disappointing but I do appreciate him coming here and his presentation about luminescent mushrooms was great

Nice too see someone saying aminita muscaria tastes nice, I found it was really delicious though converting the ibotenic acid with an acidic solution ruins the flavour though, its such a weird mushroom, took about 3 hours before it produced any effects in myself, much like ketamine like drugs in higher doses.

You said Olympic Peninsula. I don't know much about the southern third of OP, but otherwise, this looks much like the south end of the Kitsap Peninsula, as in the Oak Patch area, which brings to mind that there would almost have to be some unique fungi growth in the actual oak area, and right on the edge of the actual oak patch. My dad told me they cut oak out there for boat keels, back when boats were still being built at Seabeck .

Here in Scotland we have a huge abundance of true Amanita Muscaria and a abundance of pine plantation and forest. We have a vast variety of wild mushrooms here including Pscilocybin and .Amanita. Today your film reminds me of our woodlands . I would love you all to come and visit here to take my friends out in the beautiful semi ancient wild ecosystems. I to enjoy eating Amanita Muscaria as well as those so beautiful Blushers. Peace from Rosewell. Can I ask where you are based Julia? Obviously not exactly, but approximately? I'm in Dundee, and would love to go mushroom foraging but not really sure where to start? I foraged a large amount of mushrooms a couple of years back but got slightly scared and just used them as mushroom compost? But the variety was great. The last couple if years haven't been great for finding many though? Thanks.

I think they are on Amazon. I would just go on Amazon and search for a convoy c8 365 and see what the prices are. I have a 395 that I got on Amazon for like $20, and it's cool but it's way more purple than his. Too purple almost.

Hey aaron, i know you are from the west coast but i was just curious if you or allen have ever been to the northeastern part of the country to forage and identify and if so if you had any videos of it?? Im from New York and haven't been into this very long and am like a sponge right now lol

I've had two rangers and two sheriffs wait at my car for two hours, I watched them try all the doors then try to pry a window down, pry the trunk. I sat off a bit and watched them. I couldn't figure it out. Eventually I had to go and I walked up. They didn't like the out of state plates that were near expiring and a zip lock on the dash with a whole ginseng in it. It looked like a dirty root, not some powder or anything. I didn't really explain. I was pretty cross from watching them. It was a stick and I peeled-out a lot at the top of the gravel drive getting up on the road, unintentionally. They didn't follow. Stopped again when lugging 30 some pounds of Flammulina velutipes and had it confiscated even with an id book (before smartphones). They didn't believe me it wasn't something that blues I suspect. It was weird. I was legal in a state forest that allowed hunting, fruit/shroom and seed/nut collection, sign was in the lot. They probably took them home hoping I was lying. The weather was perfect too. It snowed when it was kinda warm and they stood out all over b/c they melt the snow.

That's wild how the camera automatically makes close up depth of field increase possible. So much automatically possible which wasn't possible in the days of film. Photography has become far more powerful as a tool.
