I'm curious why the writers said no one knows the actual purpose of these artificial islands. The main purpose is completely evident, namely by planting the Chinese flag on these "Islands" China gets to claim the waters surrounding the islands in a cynical attempt to claim all of the South China Sea. Any military capabilities present are just to defend the artificial islands and serve little strategic function other than that. They've even tried to claim parts of Indonesia that were established as Indonesian territory several years before Chinese nationhood was established despite the island being populated by Indonesian people with schools, local government and police.

And we don’t call it Area 51. That’s a geographical designation which can’t be expanded, as the whole country is divided and inumerated. It’s called the Nevada Test Site. Everyone just calls it Area 51, regardless of technicalities.. Guarantee the amount of people who know it as Area 51 exceed by a few orders of magnitude than people who would have a clue what "Nevada Test Site" is or put the two together. Besides, it's actually called: "A remote detachment administered by Edwards Air Force Base, the facility is officially called Homey Airport (ICAO: KXTA, FAA LID: XTA)[1] or Groom Lake (after the salt flat next to its airfield)."

The thing about area 51 not being officially acknowledged until 2013 always feels untrue to me thanks to it being mentioned in Stargate SG1. The show had the official backing of the US air force including them needing to sign off on scripts. Since the show refers to Area 51 and it's official name (Groom Lake), I would offer that as being the actual timeframe when it was acknowledged.

@mehere8038
@mehere8038 9 ай бұрын
depends on what you mean by "important" & yes, Pine Gap at least really IS "that" important. It's location makes it indispensible, without it, the US has no real time control over any of it's assets in half the world - at least if it wants to avoid hacking of them! Might be rather important to know if a nuke's been launched before it comes into your direct communications range too, don't you think? The US interfered in Australian politics, removing a Prime Minister from power because he threatened to close it down ffs! You think they do something like that lightly? Because of it's size & required location for it's purpose, it's simply impossible to keep it secret, but it's one of the world's most important "secret" bases. It does things no other base can do, regardless of how secret it is

One amusing thing about the Chinese "Secret bases". Due to their location, they are in international waters, so anyone can legally be in the area. The US routinely flies aircraft in the area to keep an eye on them. There was one a few years back that the Navy released the video of. It was several minutes of the aircraft flying a few miles away from the island while the Chinese on the island were telling the US aircraft to go away and they were flying in Chinese airspace. The AC told them they were flying over international territory and would continue to do so. Everytime the Chinese garrison sent a message, it was a different person transmitting. One theory is they thought "Maybe his English wasn't good and they didn't understand, so we'll have someone else do it." After multiple tries, the camera on the aircraft was recording the poor E sitting in the back writing down everything. The new guy on the line went through the whole "This is Chinese airspace, you are in violation of international law, yada yada." Then, after a few seconds of dead air "............Meow." The kid writing everything down just started laughing like crazy while the rest of the crew were just looking at each other going "..Meow???"

Just a comment from a eager follower of Your channels: The "Paradise Farm" was originally, named by "Kelly" Johansen, a brilliant engineer, during the development of, if my memory serves, the "Project Oxcart". This was irony, though, it was basically only desert, when his right hand man, later the CEO of "Skunk Works", Ben Rich, was sent there to build up a test site for the planes. This grove up to its size during the years to come. All this from his (Ben Rich) book/Life, about his career in Skunk Works, with SR 71 as a peak for Johansens career , and ending with SR 117 as his first "own" plane/CEO, creating history in radar deflection capabilities. I recommend the book, it´s a great piece of aviation history. from a Finn in Diaspora

Brian May was a man of many talents. He was a world-renowned guitarist, a brilliant astrophysicist, and a loving husband and father. But he was also a man with a secret. Brian had a winkle that was always hanging out. It was a small, pink winkle that he had been born with. It was not a particularly attractive winkle, but it was a part of him. Brian had always been self-conscious about his winkle. He tried to keep it hidden, but it was always there, just below the surface. He was afraid that people would make fun of him if they saw it. One day, Brian was walking down the street when he tripped and fell. His pants ripped, and his winkle was exposed for all to see. People stared and laughed. Brian was humiliated. Brian ran home and hid in his room. He was ashamed of himself. He felt like a freak. He didn't want to go out in public anymore. But then, Brian realized that he couldn't let his winkle control his life. He had to learn to accept himself, winkle and all. Brian started to wear his winkle with pride. He would walk down the street with his head held high. He would even make jokes about his winkle. People started to see Brian for who he really was: a kind, talented, and funny man. They didn't care about his winkle. They just cared about Brian. Brian May is a true inspiration. He showed the world that it's okay to be different. He taught us that we should accept ourselves, winkles and all.

But yet during the whole cold war the peace and treaties and base intelligence sharing post cold war still we have never seen a massive under water/underland but attached by water bunkers which either can only be accessed by subs or hidden top side entrance. Which is such a cool covert idea. Especially with a hidden cave entrance with rock tunnels to get to the base in a sub and possibly even having a fake rock door.

these bases were either testing the original spy planes or created after them, so obviously they all understand aerial surveillance! It's not the public they're worried about seeing what they have, it's their enemies with the spy planes or satellites, so obviously everything really secret is underground

As an Australian I can say that what goes on at PG is still very classified to this day. I'd go as far as to say not even ASIO know however I'd make a guess the ADFD do in a very limited capacity.

Pine Gap has been thought to be a listening station since at least the seventies, possibly earlier. I mean, given its position on the globe, why wouldn't it be? Source: am Australian.

I was honored to have worked at Area51 from 85-89 on the Black Project, the F-117A Stealth. Awesome days with experience, knowledge, and working along side the Skunk Works Engineers. Go Air Force.

@williamtate79 the thing is, you're not wrong. There do have to be people there to do that. I'm guessing they probably just use members of the military working there. But, maybe there is some contract for the highest cleared janitorial staff around.

Pine Gap's real purpose is actually well known in Australia. It's a submarine port for subs travelling along the tunnels from the north to south of the couuntry. We're not supposed to tell anyone that though, so don't say I told you
