This works great! I made it out of a small supplement bottle so it is about the same height but almost twice as wide. Used a strip of filter sponge (cut with a bread knife) to wrap around the inside. Didn't use a straw, but was able to use the air hose with a stone fit snug (no glue). Great idea!

I don't understand how this is a filter? This is a diffuser for the air pump. It has no way to suck water in. If I'm wrong, please tell me how (like actually explain how it sucks in the water it needs to clean) because I NEED a tiny FILTER.
@reanimaniact3263
@reanimaniact3263 5 жыл бұрын
@@rockarollawmn i think it's just the way he created the "filter" that's confusing but the way these types of DIY filters work is With being connected to an air pump and putting the airline tubing inside the bottle through one of the holes he drilled , the other holes that were drilled will be sucking water through because of the air pump/line . all that water being sucked into the bottle will be filtered by either "filter floss / poly-fil " which will polish the water or you can do lava rock or bio-balls or gravel for biological bacteria . once the water is sucked into the bottle and goes through the media it then will exit the bottle through the top with either clean water or clean and cycled water depending on the media used. I've created some before and there's many youtube videos of people doing these types of filters I just think the way he did it here was maybe a little different so idk how effective his method is

But why use a straw which has to be attached to the air tube? Just put the air hose into the bottle and hot glue the hose to the cap. No tape that would not hold.
@sixxmesixx
@sixxmesixx 6 жыл бұрын
Just a tip, never put super glue in your tank. Only use aquarium safe glue and a brand new bottle form the pharmacy. They will give them to you free. Then there isn't a chance any medication residue is on the bottle. Purchase a sponge filter (they are so cheap it's almost free). Next, add some carbon to the bottom of the bottle, cut the sponge to fit the bottle and drop it in. Finally, cover and stick in the hose. So long as you have a small enough opening in the sponge the hose will stay. There isn't a need for glue. I figured this out when I used a tiny baby food jar, without the top, as my filter box. Worked great! :-)

The air goes up through the top and pulls water with it. This creates a vacuum where water needs to be replaced and comes through the holes drilled in the sides (and through the filter medium). Beneficial bacteria colonize the filter and clean the water as it passes through.
