I love these type of sponge filters. I have been using these for a few months with all my air pumps instead of airstones. So for me I like the extra filtration in my tanks so when I clean my main filters I still have plenty of beneficial bacteria. And another thing I love is it makes setting up new tanks or quarantine tanks easy. I can pull the sponges out of an established tank and put them in another tank. And because it's an extra filter I don't have to worry out crashing the established tank and quickly get the other tank up and running. These are awesome!

I gave my wife a 55 gallon aquarium set up when we were dating 30 years ago. I wanted it to be easy for her to maintain. I set it up and then put a pond filter(coffee can sized) at each back corner of the tank. Tossed the riser tube and used some one inch pvc for new risers. Cut them off below the surface to allow a powerhead to sit on each riser. Either 250 gph or 400gph. I no longer remember which. I gave her directions. Each week remove four gallons of tank water and wash one filter sponge in it. Return it to the tank and refill the tank. Alternating each sponge a week apart. I gave her a couple of dozen African fry and in a year she had a tank with nearly two dozen five inch fish. All in full color in a crystal clear tank. I did put some large plastic plants in front of the filters to hide them to some degree. It's nearly impossible to overfilter a tank unless you put fish in that need calm water like bettas. Underfiltering is likely the most common issue for new hobbyists. Consider needing to move four to ten times the tank volume per hour for proper filtering.

I LOVE the Hygger sponge filter. I've started switching all my tanks with HOB filters to the Hygger sponge filters. I've had fun decorating one of the tanks with plumbing pipes and kindda added some pipes to house the air tubes running to the sponge filters. Makes the filter look part of the underwater pipework decorations. Loving it. I work for a leading retail pet supply company and I wish we were carrying the Hygger. Fast forward 6+ months. I wish Hygger had a hanger which attached over the tank wall and held the filter system in place, so you can lift the unit out of the tank to pull off a sponge or get into the bio-material compartment. Sticking you arm halfway between your elbow and armpit to reach a sponge or bio-material cup is kindda insane.

Love the nano one since I have a 3-gallon, 2 5’s, and 1 10 betta nanotanks. One little suggestion though- the filters were all black, your shirt was black, the back tank was dark and, much as you said you weren’t sure about the overhead camera, it was thanks to that camera that we could see the filters the best because of the contrast against the wooden table top. So I’m glad for the overhead camera. Maybe a shirt that contrasts better with what you’re showing for the next one. 🙂

I had a hang in the back filter for years and just wasn’t happy with the water clarity, but when I switched over, man it was amazing! Also being the n the bedroom I need quiet so having to add an air pump was a no go for me, being a hobbyist since age 9, I in my mid sixties now, I have never found a truly quiet air pump, well the power head on the medium sized truly is, and being oversized it keeps my tank crystal clear. My tank is heavily planted in live plants and even in a twenty no one notices the dual sponges attached to the back of the tank at the back. The biggest bonus is having a thriving colony of cherry shrimp in my community tank there is so much less filter maintenance than I had before, life got so much better. Okay, so first if all, a power sponge filter, is a sponge filter. An air sponge filter, is a sponge filter. Sponge filter, sponge filter; sponge filter. Now, I have explored quite a few channels and have an unanswered question that I was wondering if you could maybe think on for a bit. When selecting media to put in your filter, have you ever considered using quarks? The amount of surface area they have? Insane! I'm not saying to reuse quarks from wine bottles.... but they were the inspiration. I was thinking quark could be used in one of two ways: A) in small pieces in a medium bag near the end of you canister filtration, same kind of bag you would put activated charcoal in if you needed to use it. B) a board on the bottom or on the back of the middle of your sump (refugium?) It would keep any plants secured to it pretty well. Having all your plants attached to it, if you ever needed to removed them, it would be easy and the quark could keep the plant root moist for a reasonable amount of time while you maintained the sump tank. I feel like beneficial bacteria would spawn on it like CRAZY. Love the channel, love the content, appreciate the unique views you guys have to offer!

Nice review. The bio media sponge filter looks like it would work pretty good. You could even put in chemical filtration in the compartment. How is the construction and durability? I have tried this type of sponge filters(dual sponges) in the past and they were always cheaply built and didn't last as long as the traditional sponge filter. I will definitely try out the one with the bio rings container in it. Now, in my opinion, what would really put this sponge filter over the top would be if you could insert an air stone in the lift tube somehow to make them more quite. That was always my issue with traditional sponge filters. I use them religiously in all my tanks and I put in the no-clog air stones from Aquarium Co-op. Makes them super quite. Thanks for sharing.

Definitely top notch as far as sponge filters go.

Question if you don't mind - are you using the ones with the motor or without the motor. If using the motorized one, I was curious if you are able to take it apart for cleaning as I am sure this will get all gunked up over time and will need to be clean at some point. Thanks

@@Mrdds1520 I’m using the one without a motor. I run a linear air piston pump in my fish room so I have air on hand. It’s a lot easier that worrying about having enough plugs. As far as maintenance on the motor I have no clue.

Set the ones I have actually have bottoms ceramic ball cup so it's a double filter which have ceramic balls in the bottom for the bacteria to cling onto

I made my DIY internal canister sponge filter with bio media, it's big but works so well using half the electricity of a normal pump. I planted lots of vallis in front of it. Ehime make the best air pumps, its worth the extra in my opinion. Got 2 both are old and work perfectly.

I’m running a full size double HOB this double with median one and a good size traditional sponge and my tank is clean as a whistle

I run one of those large ones to help polish my tank . I'm thinking about running 2 in my 125 for the same reason and to add a little beneficial bacteria to the tank, first time having Oscars so I'm going the extra mile for them.

I’ve had the air driven double barrel with coco pebbles for about 6 months and love that filter, not the best for mechanical filtration but that goes for all sponge filters

I just found this channel and am a new fish keeper. I love the vids. I have one question…. Do these replace the stock filter system that comes with most kits? Sorry for the ignorance.

Bought one of the twin sponge filters 2 weeks ago. It is totally ace. I thought that changing the sponges individually to keep all the good bacteria going would be a great plus. Really, awesome product. I’m sold and my fish here in the UK - if they could speak - Would defo be for this product. They would love the price also 👍

Coacoa puffs, lol. I first thought of those antique marbels I find in my yard all the time, lol. I have been using the double sponge one for over a year now on one end of my 55 gal and I run an over the back 50/75 Aqueon on the other end. The two work awesome together

I use sponge filters as a secondary filter to hang on power filters on smaller tanks and canister filters on larger tanks.

I bought the one with small pump in it but without biomedia section. It worked great for my 15 gallon 60liters angle fish fry tank.

hi John these filters are fantastic I think theyve been available here in the uk and Oz for a while now but the one with the powerhead built in may well be a game changer and will draw loads more through the sponges! 👌

Do these have extra replacement sponges to buy over and above what they supply with the filters?

I'm Coo Coo for Couao Puffs, I like the idea but worry about what has to be the least expensive pump of all time. I trust you two implicitly but I still like the air version, which thanks to you ordered 3 today from you.

If you have a two sponge setup it makes it possibile to tak e turms wiith cleaning the sponmhes, ælike even weeks the left one uneven weeks the right one. This keeps the bacteria present in the other sponge and makes it possible for bbacteria to more quickly settle on the cleaned sponge.
