I am 35 years old and I feel healthier now than I did in my early 20's. See what happened was I gave up alchohol, increased my water and organic food intake, took up yoga and meditation. Now I don't get sick (like ever), and haven't been to a doctor in years. Our bodies are more capable than we could ever imagine.

I am male and in my 70's. I had reason to look at a plant free diet for my health after a lifetime of high plant food diet that left me with a very ordinary health outcome. I accepted my health then as normal as I knew no better. After the change to totally plant free my health has improved immensely. Practically beyond recognition in daily functioning. This is overall not just in any single issue. I will let others do their own researching as I am not about to get into any debate. This may not suit others. I believe blood type has something to do with it, maybe, in ones ability to cope with plant matter. In my case it most certainly was. How one handles stress is also a determining factor in health outcomes.

The U.S. regulatory departments in government are run by big pharma and biotech employees that make the laws, policies and those that lobby government. After taking university genetics and molecular biology courses, I see genetics as so freaking complicated in terms of regulation, repair mechanisms, differential gene expression, robustness, etc, etc that I can't imagine the scenario people are freaking out about with designer babies or super-human soldiers. So much of genetics is not understood, not just about specific traits, but about how pathways operate. And much of genetic engineering in a lab is shooting in the dark and hoping a certain percent of your attempts were successful. It's extraordinarily difficult to edit single nucleotides or drop whole exons in precise targeting. As far as CRISPR itself, the machinery could bind to other locations within the genome and act at a non-target site (yay, unintended consequences) because CRISPR complexes target relatively small sequence domains. Hell, even introducing CRISPR reagents into the tissue of interest is a challenge (no, it won't just jump across the plasma membrane at the will of the scientist). Precision medicine is the future. It is so exciting that people with a range of conditions can soon have higher quality of and potentially extended lifespans. Until we all become educated enough on the technology, we can't begin to understand its implications- so until then, how about focus on how much suffering will be (and already has been!) reduced.

@@PamVines humans are not “the one” experimented on, that's blatantly inaccurate. Crispr is a ubiquitous tool used in genetics labs across not only species but kingdoms. We know how it works and its issue is primarily that of efficiency. Risks as far as the layperson’s concern are roughly predictable, and when an unintended consequence arises, the organism is studied + genome sequenced to trace the mishap. “Mistakes” generate questions of “how?” and form the basis of subsequent research. Why are you not concerned about RNAi? TALENs? Zinc finger nuclease (ZFNs)? Antisense oligonucleotides? These are all basic molecular tools for targeted gene regulation used as early as the mid-'90s (antisense oligos since the ‘70s!), and yet there wasn’t a public outcry until crispr, which is a naturally occurring system that accomplishes the same goal for less money. My initial comments on needing more knowledge and assessing the risks were academic in nature, not to be read as an endorsement of public panic. If you want more clarification, feel free to follow up, and unless you specify what risk you're referring to, I'd suggest anyone reading your comment blow it off.

If we happened to play a part in this being done, and a specimen of Frankenstein virus were to "escape" the lab, then it'll be ok because the leak will not have been directly related to gain of function studies in a legally provable way. The content of the discussion covered so many ideals that masked the context, that was never brought up about "Funding" which holds direct control over whether any of the ideals she mentioned are remotely implemented or, more importantly, even considered. I said well, the first thing we have to do is figure out how genes and chronosomes are related to disease and maybe behaviour. The professor at a SF Bay Area college said - You are wasting your time, there is no way we can get into anything as small as a gene or chronosome, go home and have babies and forget about it. Really useful genome editing tool, but this has been around for a little while but it’s gaining lots of attention because of its efficiency and ease of use. Biotechnology as a whole is rapidly developing and the pandemic just fast tracked the market since it provided solutions chemical engineering couldn’t provide. Genome editing has been around for a lot of time, especially in the agricultural world. The ethical debate is really concerning tho, because a lot of concepts are entangled. Doudna appears to define open conversation as exchanges with her fellow scientists, those with a built in profit based bias for the "more is better" relationship with knowledge which is the unquestioned holy dogma of their enterprise. I truly understand where you are coming from please understand that. However, No man can control technology and the outcome of that technology. Her condition could become far worse due to this technology than now. Your talking about Humans using a technology that there is absolutely no way to ever determine the potential outcome. Man has been irresponsible with what we have already been given on this earth that there is no turning back from. Countries have the technology to annihilate every human on this planet already. The outcome of gene editing technology will have far reaching disastrous effects than man can realize.
