Unmatched for technical ability in backhand barrels, ridiculous what Johns doing with his board

Heart break for the local boy but bit refreshing to see judges rewarding skill over catching a more perfect wave

I agree. Although the duality of criteria by the judges in the last wave was a bit suspicious, considering that the timing was just too convenient: they underscore (by their criteria on the majority of the event so far) the last wave of a heat that would knock a fan favourite vs a wild card... And I say this when I'm a big JJF fan

@@dawsonbolus I personally agree, it 100% was. What I'm saying is that in a different situation the scores are going in the way of a bigger/more perfect wave, which Mihimana's was

@@JoaoRodrigues-ic2dv I get that. It depends what the head judge feels is the best and then he sways the other judges. IMO there should be no head judge

John's 7.6 was in the neighborhood of a 9+, so deep, so difficult and maybe the longest barrel of the event. Respect to Mihimana, extremely consistent.

Anyone who understands that Jjf is sliding out on purpose, using that to his advantage understands backhand tube slowing… probably not on the drops, although used to his advantage…but on his 7.6 for sure, there’s no other way to slow down that much, and hence the claim. That was not by mistake, pure sensitivity

This heat should not have been this close. JJF's waves -- and technique -- were 2 - 3 points better than Braye. To put it in context, Slater scored a 9.73 for something less dynamic or difficult than what JJF did here.

I noticed that. It was a way for him to stall for the barrel. But the woman announcer had no idea he was doing that on purpose. Great board control by JJF

Shouldn't have been this close. Brayes barrels were big and clean but easy. Johns 7.6 was a much higher level than Brayes 8 plus. Correct result but again poor judging influenced by buzz beater / local hero combination. Just saved themselves.
