If you look at the research and writing credits in the description you will see three new names there: Chris Keller, Nik van der Veen, and Jamie Nagele. Who are these fine gentlemen you ask? Well, they are three of the new eight-person intern team! They've been with us since August but this is the first time any of their work has gone public. You'll be meeting the rest as the months go on, but you may have already unknowingly interacted with some of them in the KZbin comments. Anyway for now please welcome Chris, Nik, Jamie to the team and wish them all the best in their work. There is more from them to come. And thanks once again to Chewbacca, Fogeltje, and TimeGhost Army member, Tristan Blackshaw, for their questions. Something we didn't mention in the episode is that Chewbacca and Fogeltje are two very active posters over on community.timeghost.tv. Sending kids off to the countryside was a common practice in many European countries - from the time trains became affordable till probably the 60ies. Many working class kids were malnourished (eg C & D vitamin deficiency). There's even anecdotal evidence that it could be on doctor's orders. That became even more pressing during the wars when cities were bombed & food rationed - fresh food maybe even not available. Also happened in Great Britain during the Blitz.

In relation to the first question asked about allied seamen and how they were treated by the German Navy, read: The Navy's Here by Robert Jackson & Willi Frischauer about the Deutschland-class Admiral Graf Spee & it's supply ship the Altmark from early in the war. It is the best account and accurate on what happened. The book itself has been out of print for some time, but it's still available 2nd hand. My grandfather was on board the SS Ashlee when it was captured by the Admiral Graf Spee & was transferred to the Altmark and ultimately rescued by Captain Phillip Vian crew from HMS Cossack.

How was Irish neutrality being view by the Allies and the Axis at this point of the war? Given the lack of respect showed to neutrality by both sides during the war and how valuable Ireland's ports would have been it always amazes me that we got through the war without being invaded.
@alexsis17783 жыл бұрын
While officially neutral, the reason why Ireland wasn't invaded was because they actually provided quite a few benefits to the Allies. Irish airspace was open to flyovers, Shannon airport was used as a refueling point by US planes on their way to Africa, Irish intelligence services passed information on to the British, the Irish military made joint defense plans in case they were invaded by Germany, Irish shipping would often rescue survivors of U-boat attacks and finally tens of thousands of Irish citizens joined the armed services of the UK. So sure, the government itself wasn't providing overt military assistance, but Ireland was by no means truly neutral in the conflict. On the topic of the ports though you have to consider that warring parties are allowed to dock in neutral ports for 48 hours for repair and resupply before they're supposed to be interred to the end of the war. With that sort of time frame, as close to England as it is, any ship that was forced to dock in an Irish port could pretty easily get whatever help they needed to make the short trek back to England.
@johnknapp9523 жыл бұрын
What "lack of respect" to neutrality are you referring to (for Europe Theater)? We have Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Turkey (yes I know it's mostly in Asia) and Ireland being Neutral and respected. An example would be helpful here.

My snap judgement vote goes to Spain for staying neutral. Had Spain allowed Hitler to roll an army on land from France to isolate, neutralize, and eventually capture the British base at Gibraltar, say in 1940 after the fall of France when British land power was at its low point, that would have denied Allied access to the Mediterranean Sea except through Suez. In turn that probably would have allowed Rommel or maybe even the Italians to advance all the way to Suez, sealing off the Mediterranean from the Allies until British and later American strength could build up enough to make what would have been a difficult amphibious invasion somewhere, such as in Morocco or Spain, but without vital support from the Gibraltar base as in the real Operation Torch. The Allies would probably have had to rely more on carrier-based aircraft, as in the later Pacific theater invasions, and the necessary carrier strength wouldn't be available until at least 1944 and would have come at the expense of fighting against Japan. On the other hand, if fascist Franco had entered the war on the side of the Axis, he might not have stayed in power until 1975. He might have been deposed before Mussolini as Spain probably would have been the most exposed Axis link and thus invaded first. But that assumes the USSR could have survived an attack from a Hitler who wasn't delayed by Allied annoyances in Greece and elsewhere. With the British out of the Mediterranean early, Hitler could have attacked the USSR sooner and with more strength. Had the USSR fallen early, ~200 German divisions could have been freed up to move west to render an Allied invasion all but impossible for a long time, or south toward the Persian Gulf oil fields. It's hard to be sure but an Axis Spain could have had a huge impact on the war early, and depending on knock-on effects on the Eastern Front it may have been decisive.

The Zam Zam was a neutral passenger vessel owned by the Egyptians. It was unarmed and attacked without warning by Atlantis. No orders to stop, no warning shot fired at it. There was no radio transmission attempts. The Atlantis fired 55 six inch shells at this old passenger vessel destroying the ship, destroying lifeboats sinking the ship. The passengers were mostly American missionaries and their families, and American volunteer ambulance drivers. There story is on KZbin, hear a four year old explain why he feared for his life? The Nazi Captain transferred them to a blockade runner and said they were being taken to Brazil. They were not taken to Brazil. They were kept men, women and children imprisoned in the hold of the ship and forced to be on a blockade runner to France while they feared for their lives every day that they would be torpedoed and sunk. There was also an American news reporter onboard, his story is very interesting. Nazi Germany at its best, treating Neutral American missionaries as prisoners of war, not putting them on a neutral ship, not landing them in Brazil. The Thor on capturing Crew and passengers on the Nankin transferred them to Japanese control, this was also done to the crews of other ships captured by the Nazi”s There was an ability for the non-combatants to be transferred via neutral ships that carried out “exchanges” . The Nazi’s refused to do this and the survivors remained captive in Japan until August 1945. There is an interesting book about their ordeals.

my grand-uncle, who is still alive and 88 years old by now, spoke a few times about the days in the third Reich. Ironically, even if he wanted to join the Hitlerjugend, his father was a socialist at heart, so if he had dared to ask if he can join the HJ he would have gotten a hefty beating out of it if nothing else, so the HJ was not even an option for him. Apparently the village he lived in was relatively lucky because the nazis didn't have as much of a grip on the community there because everybody knew and respected each other, and most of the people were on good terms or friends with the mayor, so as long as they kept their head down, even known supporters of socialist movements were left alone. Jews however were a different story, they were deported the same as everywhere else. According to my great-aunt (his wife, who passed away last year), people knew that something was strange about that. They were told the jewish families were resettled elsewhere, but it seemed strange that you never heard back from them. Even close friends of Jewish families never received a letter. However there was not much you could do about that, especially because it took a while to realize something was fishy and by the time all the Jews were already gone. Plus noone dared to openly oppose the SS. You could get away with being a socialist supporter if you kept your head down, but openly opposing the SS would have had consequences even with the protection of the mayor.

I wonder which service's POWs, regardless of nation, received the best and worst treatment - We have an image of fighter pilots being more chivalrous, and I'd imagine that bomber pilots and U-boat crews would be viewed with more disdain given the nature of their jobs, but it'd be interesting to know for sure

Hi, We have plenty of info on what happened and still happening to war criminals, concentration camp guards etc. in Europe after the war. There is little known on what happened to war criminals in Asia. Can you enlighten us more on that subject?
