Күн бұрын

Allied plans to take Trondheim in Norway to allow for larger reinforcements and even bigger aerial support to come in are disbanded as the troops approaching Trondheim are pulled back from Norway. While the Allied efforts in Norway lose force there, the Allied forces in Western Europe are prepared for a German invasion through the Benelux countries. The Japanese too are determined to continue their campaign in China, and send thousands more young men into the battlefields.

The situation in Norway looks grim for the Allied forces, and the Norwegians are steadily losing faith in the Allied capability to turn things around. And even though all is still quiet on the Western Front, the Allies have a plan ready to counter a German invasion of France and the Benelux countries. This episode is, again, very heavily filled with top notch maps and animations. These are all made by Eastory, who has a KZbin channel on his own as well! You guys should explain the difference in size between the divisions of the various armies. For example, a Japanese division is HUGE compared to a Chinese one, more than double the size, and 3 times the firepower. A Chinese "Army" is about the same size and combat strength as a Japanese "division". This becomes an even bigger issue as the Soviets get involved. Their division and corps setup is also quite unique and not at all comparable to their German counterparts.
@podemosurss8316
@podemosurss8316 5 жыл бұрын
Zer Lv And for the Soviets, it even changes between branches: their Mechanised corps were made of 4 brigades (equivalent to 2 divisions), while their rifle corps had 3-4 rifle (infantry) divisions and 1 artillery brigade. And the cavalry corps having 2 cavalry divisions (increased to 3 in 1943) and 1 tank brigade. That not counting all the reorganisations made at battalion level and below (companies, platoons...). A Soviet platoon in 1941 and a Soviet platoon in 1943 were only equal in name. The size went from 45 to 50 soldiers, the squads went from 4 to 3, some positions within the platoon were changed (messengers for snipers, FE) and the intended armaments changed too.

I believe that after Italy, the Soviets were the first to switch from three-regiment division to binary-regiment infantry division, with Germans following suit even later on. Apparently, binary divisions were more maneuverable, faster to get on the rode when the order for departure was given, and in general easier to manage. The need for a third reserve regiment, so useful in the trench warfare of WW1, diminished on the wide terrain of the eastern front.

I am guessing Huntzinger was playing tough for the outside, just to not reveal the cracks in his sector, trying to buy time to get more resources allocated and rectify his deficiencies. It is very unlikely for a commander in war time to openly admit that his defences are weak, specially with an enemy invasion on the horizont. Just my two cents, trying to play devil's advocate here.

Easy to say with hindsight 20/20. You forget that Generals asking for more troups was the norm, not the exepction. I think it was Ludendorff who said that one of the most important tasks of a chief of staff was to ignore the begging of his generals (cant find the quote right now, sadly). Ofc the french did mess up big times, but when all your generals want more troups its hard to decide where to send reinforcements.

Great episode! Hope you can explain how the germans overcame the natural barriers of the ardennes forest in more detail, since the french apparently concluded that the ardennes forest would buy them enough time to deal with a possible invasion. One of the reasons that Germany moved so quickly in these early days was because of their openness to new tactics. The Allies won the First World War, they wrongly assumed the same tactics would work again. Germany was more than willing to abandon the tactics that had failed them in 1914-1918. Never underestimate an enemy, especially if you’ve beaten them in the past.
@TheCimbrianBull
@TheCimbrianBull 5 жыл бұрын
Well, yes and no. Maneuver warfare, or "Bewegungskrieg" in German, is a tactical concept that was already in use by Prussia in the latter half of the 18th century. In short, rapid encirclement of the enemy main force and a concentration of own forces to destroy the enemy. This concept was in modified ways applied up until WW2. For it to be successful it requires mechanization and combined arms. In the Great War this conclusion was also realized by Australian general John Monash on the Western front but largely ignored and forgotten after the war. Long story short, variations of the concept have been practiced postwar and to this day.
@WorldWarTwo
@WorldWarTwo 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, but as was said before, the Allies were looking at WW1 and saw a successful strategy for keeping the Germans out. The Germans saw a failing strategy for entering France. Their strategy evolved looking to improve upon their failures. The Allies expected theirs to still be effective.

Our issue with being demonetized is not so much the pay, but that it stops us from growing by decreasing how often the videos are recommended. To make money with KZbin ads you need to have many millions of views per video, so we continue to depend on support from our viewers. As our formats get more and more complicated (especially as WW2 grows), we need to expand the team, and that in turn means we have to grow our viewership to gain new supporters.

But also remember that Norway did held on the neutrality doctrine and even chased british ships away to stay neutral, also that many in both the military and some in the government was german friendly... to begin with. Narvik however was a true battle where the germans for the first time during the war met really really hard resistence and even defeat. with the help of allied forces they did manage to push the germans back and almost threw the german forces to sweden... before the allied orders of retreat came and left the norwegian troops to themself and they had no other choise to seek a surrender. There are coming a movie about the Narvik Campaign later .. not sure maybe next year ?...

2:20 "While yet we live, Poland shall not perish" - the opening words of our national anthem "Mazurek Dąbrowskiego", a motto of all Polish people since our struggle to regain independence. A patriotic song sung by Polish Legionaires, who fought by Napoleon's side, by fighters who took part in our national uprisings and finally the soldiers, who fought to reestablish Poland and her borders in WWI and conflicts that sprung afterwards. In 1927 it was officially declared the national anthem of Poland. Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła, póki my żyjemy.

That's the bloody irony: Polish Legionaires with the words "All men are brothers" sewn on their pauldrons, who were fighting alongside Napoleon to regain their freedom and independence were sent by the French to suppress the freedom and Independence of the Haitians and the Spanish. And the Atlantic? Before the German invasion part of our fleet was sent to station in British harbours (Akcja Pekin), thus being saved from destruction in the September campaign. When Poland fell, Polish Government in Exile agreed to place the ships under British command. To wszystko w imię sojuszy, Jacku. Sojuszy, z którymi wiązaliśmy tak wielkie nadzieje. The main thing they learned from the hell of the Great War is that they prayed day in, day out they wouldn't need to face the same thing again, only with even more deadly weapons this time. Even when Poland fell and Finland was bleeding, the Brits and the French were busy convincing themselves that it surely won't affect them at all in the end. This is made evident by how after the war they couldn't have cared less about the whole East Europe being left to be oppressed by the Soviets. It only mattered the war was over for the Brits, France, (and the Benelux countries on the side). But then again, a country's only responsibility is to take care of its own citizens, and that's what they will ultimately do, and only that. Those who blindly believe in Nato, or other such things, are in for a ghastly surprise if the shit again hits the fan one day. In that sense Trump was right and honest when he told certain countries to fix their broken defense forces.
