Probably the most important video for anyone who wants to start a reef tank. I've seen videos duplicating standard instructions of how to set up a saltwater tank for the prospective reef-keeper, but very rarely do those same videos go into slight depth about what reef-keepers often pay attention to so that they can keep corals alive. Reef-keepers will spend thousands on automated dosers and drip systems with fail-safe programs attached to their phones, but when it comes to chemistry, it's as if everything stops at salinity and nitrates.

During my 2 1/2 years of reefing I have read and watched videos obsessively because there is s much to learn. Bar none, your videos are the most clear, to the point and thorough I have seen! You are a very excellent teacher! If only every new reefer was required to watch your beginner/intermediate series think of all the fish and coral lives that could be saved. Thank you for what you do, it's very much needed! 🤩⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

That s what I m doing now lol😅 and it’s confusing. I prefer an all-in-one easy product and a easy testing system because not all of us are whiz kids. You say you're targeting new reefers, and that is a fantastic target. However, even as an intermediate. Being reminded of, and focusing on the fundamentals, is incredibly valuable. Repetition and reexplanations are some of the best ways to stay grounded. And not get sidetracked by fads and hobby trends, or go down a rabbit hole in minutiae (though they can be fun conversations). I still find these helpful. Thank you for continuing to add to your library with your focus on fundamentals.

As a beginner what I miss is watching many channels and videos and each praises another product, contradicting one another and aside from the basics of how to set up, the rest turns way too confusing and complicated. Thank you much for this and perhaps reefers realise that some beginners like me only dream of a nano reef tank without fish and solely prefer channels teaching us how to keep corals as pets.

Awesome video again, Josh and the team. Super helpful and well put across. When you get onto the more advanced topics I'd love to see one about trace elements. I dose Red Sea alk and calcium and use tropic marin pro reef salt on my Red sea Reefer 200. My reef zelements icp always show iodine, iron, manganese, and a couple of others low. They do give you dosing instructions but some elements can be 0.02ml per day for 25 days which just isn't realistic. I'm doing 25l water changes per week but not keeping up with the traces so would love to see what you would recommend in this scenario. Cheers Allister

I test once a week at the end of the day when everything has settled and look at having a small range consistently around the number where my corals are thriving, these numbers might be different to others, like alk is 10, nitrates 15, etc the main thing I am always adjusting is the 3:1 ratio of Calcium/Magnesium I don’t mind if they drop together and the ratio and stays in that because to me it’s being consumed correctly, so that one I may do a tiny adjustment to my dosing. The key thing I found is keeping it smooth very slow changes and if that means for weeks at the beginning you need to do daily tests then that’s what you do until you have it all dialled nice in which case you can test once a week to verify it’s still dialled in. The moment you change something then you need to be on top of it again, like adding a large coral, more fish etc. I guess what I am saying is you make a change you monitor the effect and adjust accordingly.

question, I also like to keep my salinity 1.025. But the salt I use has the magnesium 1280, so I add magnesium salt separately every time and Raise it to 1400. I use Magnesium Chloride Flakes, but every time I use them it raises the salinity a little bit like from 1.025 to 1.026, then I use a little RO water and Dilute it to 1.025 , Now the question is should I keep it at 1.026 or what I am doing is the right thing to do ? what is the best practice in that situation (assuming I keep using the same salt)

Does coralline algae thrive in stability? I had a thriving coralline algae at one point but truthfully my parameters have changed dramatically. I noticed a quick die of coralline on my rock and back glass. After it died I started dealing with GHA ever since, and the coralline hasn’t really been growing any more. It’s concerning because my tank is over three years old but I have very little coralline on my rock. My rock looks bleached almost.
