I started playing drums a few months ago after turning 32.. I’ve played guitar on the worship team at my church for 17 years before the shift to the drums.. these videos are very encouraging and informative

Glad to see a worship artist who is also a great tutorial maker! I'm a bass player, but I'm watching drum tutorials and taking notes, trying to learn how a drummer thinks and plays. I've been watching your videos for a couple weeks now. Very pleased to know you serve the King.

Great info and playing! Thanks a lot. I stand and sing worship music with a 12" djembe in a stand and a 12" splash with a hard finger ring. All hand playing. One of these days I should upgrade to a cocktail set!.....

I like how you keep your drumming simple yet interesting at the same time. Not many drummers have that ability.

Hey, Rob. Been awhile since I've seen your videos or commented on them. Been out of the drumming game for many years, sadly. Anyway, I've been thinking about getting back in and setting up a cocktail-style kit with a Yamaha Stage Custom Birch 16"X18" floor tom or 17"X20" bass drum that serves as a dual-action drum, meaning as both a floor tom and bass drum. At first I wasn't sure, 'til I saw this 2019 video, and now I am convinced that's exactly what I want to do. I just wanted you to know how helpful your videos are. Keep rockin' the drums, Rob!

Great playing as always Rob! And the kit sounds great. I have a cocktail kit myself and your so right about moving around any chance you get. That left hip does takes alot of strain while playing.

Tremble! Love that song. Love the compact setup too. Seems that the disadvantage is you mostly lose the ability to use your left foot for the hat?
@Rockin_Ross5 жыл бұрын
Good stuff brother! I’m in the Rockabilly scene and play standing up (ala Slim Jim Phantom of the Stray Cats). You’re spot on that you need to keep moving around otherwise you’ll stiffen up in the hips and that’s it for your show. The cocktail kit I have is great when mic’d and like you, I swapped the snare out for one with a bit more crack. I remember one of your older videos where you’re playing this kit. You should link that video to show some new subscribers how you rocked it back in the day.😉

I had a Peace Manhattan kit a few years back. I think I played one gig with it and my back and hips were so ripped up, I never played it out afterwards. I sold it shortly afterwards for a sit down upright floor tom set. The concept still intrigues me though.
@RobBeatdownBrown5 жыл бұрын
Yea. These things are great and instantly make you the coolest kid in the room...but they’re a serious pain in the hip if you’re not standing correctly. This one is like a leaf blower. Great when I need it but I only use it a couple times a year.

Hey Rob - love your videos, and I LOVE the look of your studio kit. Can you give us some details on the kit, specifically around the series, finish, color, and the matching of that gold hardware to the finish? Did the gold hardware come as part of the kit, or was that a custom add-on? Thanks for any info - keep on killin' it!

I got some great advice from a past worship leader about playing drums in church. "9 times out of 10 you wont be playing with proffesional musicians and honestly the congregation wouldn't (orbshouldnt) care anyways. You as the drummer control the feel more than any instrument and you are the band's metronome. If yoy play a song fast, everyone plays fast. If ypu play the wrong feel, the song will fail big-time. So, dont worry about learning the exact beat from the recording, instead prioritize your work on maintianing the feel of the recording. If you can learn the original beat its merely a bonus". Kinda a jazz mentality, but it makes everyone's life less stressful since we arent being held to a note to note standard.

Have you ever tried the DW cocktail kit? In the market for one but never heard one live or even on video.
@ShivaanKeldon2 жыл бұрын
Do you think this cocktail kit would have enough bass to play with a wind intruments band ? I'd like to join a banda, so I'll have to play standed but still, and the bass tom is the metronome in this kind of band. I'm scared people won't hear it enough with that kit. Your opinion ?

Man....great tempo,vibe everything...I just gotta ask Rob I've just started playing worship songs in a church for about 7 months and it's definitely different from other genres I've played...I'm self taught,I love your advice...how can I feel more comfortable in playing with the music and band as a whole? my patterns seem to incomplete to me... everyone says I'm doing a good job...but I'm not comfortable at all...
@RobBeatdownBrown5 жыл бұрын
Hard question to answer. The simple and unfortunately boring answer is that you just have to relax and stay confident. Nobody's expecting you to 'perform' in church so there's no pressure to play anything more than what's needed. But if you want to step your game up and play more creative and less predictable stuff, you just have to practise as often as you can outside of church and listen to a lot of different drummers, preferably outside of all the Contemporary Christian stuff. Ain't really nothin' creative happening there and you'll just avoid a ton of groove and fill cliches.

Rob, brother, could you help me with a little experiment. What if I took a 16 inch bassdrum Evans fake calfskin (calftone or evans 55, whatever its called) and put it on my floor tom? I figure it would have a bit more suatain than the emad you demo'd, and maybe a felt strip would be all i would use for muffling. I only run a 4 piece kit (personal choice) but my 14 inch floor tom and my 13 inch rack tom sound so similar. Im wondering if using a bass drum head on my floor tom would help seprate the sounds a bit more. P.S. I use your tom tuning technique, with an added 1/8 or 1/4 turn (only to get the tone to pitch up a touch). Its legit magic. Love the MAXIMUM THUMPIFICATION!

@hiptoalieu5 жыл бұрын
sounds good... But, I think you coulda gotten a LOT beefier sound out of that snare!(: Just my two cents though! Tuning, head selection, resonance control, I've been able to get a SURPRISINGLY beefy tone out of my 10 by 5.5 snare.
@JS456785 жыл бұрын
Rob, this was really nice but why would you stand and play? I’ve never seen somebody stand and play a regular drum kit like that. I’m a beginner...to me, that would be a nightmare and even more exhausting trying to count “1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and” while trying to kick a pedal, stay in perfect time, figure out when to come in on songs that don’t start on your first beat, etc...and do all this while standing....why?? 😬
@RobBeatdownBrown5 жыл бұрын
That’s the whole point of a cocktail kit. They were designed for small, cramped stages and configured to play upright so you can play actual drums when floor space is limited. It ain’t nightmarish at all. And they instantly make you the coolest guy in the room when you show up with one.
