This is some pretty intense drumming that Joe Volk makes look easy. I have been trying to learn his version for 2 years and still struggle. Perfectly played!!
@alvertskaunang49479 ай бұрын
Not always like that bro, It also depends on the genre of music being played... there are times when the drummer serves the vocalist with simple playing, but if it's in the gospel music genre like Israel Houghton and the like... the drummer will definitely serve the song with his distinctive chops.

Talking about that snare sound, some tips I could give from experience would be to use and expander, with some release, gate, heaps of EQs, double compression(second should be softer, to smooth up abit) then gain staging, in that order; this should be mostly for snare top, snare bot shouldn’t take much apart from some EQ, and phase inverting, ive noticed that inverting one side of the phase gives off a nice sort of stereo sound to the snare, try it. Also, parallel compression helps the drums to cut through the mix better, and If you like your sound but its just not where you want it to be, samples can be used to fill abit of the sound but not lead the sound. Bus the snare top and bottom to its own bus, bus the toms and overheads on their own, one bus for toms, another for overheads, and send those two busses along with the kick to another big bus (Drum with no SD) , and send the snare bus and Drum with no SD bus to another bus which should be your full drum bus. Out of the snare bus, send alot of it to the parallel bus, and a good amount from the drum no SD but abit under the amount of snare being sent to the parallel bus. In reverb, i recommend the Raum reverb from Native instruments, its free and amazing, i made a good present that sounds phenomenal on the drums and mostly snare. dedicate a reverb to the snare alone, and some reverbs for the drum overall. This is something I have found from constant experimentation to get a sound sort of like this videos and all the drum sounds ranging from Hillsong, to bethel, to elevation worship. Hope this helps someone!

@@trextonhaldeman323 I actually had the idea, hopefully I can find out how I would set up such a video! I want to do videos like that to help people who are starting, showing them what I used to do and how I do it now, in regards to mixing, and even for using mainstage and covering synth sounds
@thebrayns3 жыл бұрын
@@trextonhaldeman323 also, if you want a little more smack, you can setup ANOTHER snare parallel compression bus that cuts of alot of low end and boosts some mid highs for where the transient is and lower the sound of that bus to where it works but you cant hear

Well done, but did anyone else wonder why he was playing triplets on the HH and ride? I couldn’t hear anyone else playing that figure. The sound guy and the producer must have also been wondering because while you could hear him hit the sticks on the rim loud and clear, the HH and ride were nonexistent in the mix. That had to be intentional.
@JohnLaco3 жыл бұрын
That's what the click would be playing. The song is in 6/8 and the quarter note click would be exactly what he's doing on the ride. Then his hi hat foot is doubling that. Joe's a rock solid drummer, I can guarantee it would have sounded good. Bethel just mixes overheads pretty low because there's a lot of stuff in that frequency range to compete with.
