My aunt was a professional for over 5 decades, the only 3 pieces of art advice she ever gave me were really pretty good... 1, Watch how others who are making things you like make them. 2. You will make alot of stuff you are unhappy with, just keep making stuff. 3. Sometimes it's good enough for who it's meant for. (25 cents off burger coupons didn't need to be masterpieces, they just needed to meets a certain standard)

My university drawing teacher said something ill never forget. She said do and use whatever means you need to use to make your piece work. Side note, even a landscape artist painting from the wild, or an artist setting up a still life... thats reference. Doesn't just have to be a photo.

Re: draw every day- I think this also depends so much on your lifestyle and your job. I do draw everyday, but that's because I'm an art teacher- drawing and painting are part of my routine for work. Now if you asked me do I draw for myself every day, or for my personal practice every day, the answer would definitely be no. And before I was teaching art formally, I definitely didn't draw every single day because building extra time into my schedule for it just didn't always fit with my life and my work responsibilities. But I would also give different advice to other art teachers or to art students who want to become professional artists, than I would give to folks who are just trying to grow their artistic practice for themselves or as a hobby. Just depends on what your needs are and what your end goals are!

You're so right! Everyone requires a different routine and method for practicing & keeping artmaking fun. I find myself being creative in different ways every day, but it swaps around between concept making, active drawing, or chipping away at a long term project. my first college art teacher said that we shouldn't draw from photos because it would make our art flat. i'm not naturally inclined to drawing so it created this additional barrier to practicing because i had trouble finding things I actually wanted to draw so i eventualy just stopped once the class was done. I started drawing again in January [5 years after the class] and it's going a lot better.

Oh boy Inktober! I’m always excited for the IDEA of Inktober (ink is so dramatic and cool! Fun prompts!Spooky art during my favorite season!)…but there’s definitely pressure out there for the finished product to be VERY polished. IMO the culture of it nowadays has definitely become a recipe for burnout and feeling like you don’t measure up. Of course YMMV-some people really love the challenge, I am just not one of them it seems 😅

My advice for practice is something that applies very broadly to a lot of things, from drawing to playing an instrument to weight lifting. Rather than working on it every day, since that’ll leave you exhausted, have a weekly regimen you follow where you practice a few times a week. It doesn’t have to be strict (I WILL practice guitar for an hour at 2 o clock every Tuesday!), it can just be general guidelines you keep to (I’ll try to practice for an hour 4-5 days a week). That way you avoid burnout and see much more consistent gains over time.

I do draw every day, at least for the last year, but it's because I do a nearly daily webcomic and then I have a goofy sketchbook cartoon project which is a fun end-of-the-day wind-down. The webcomic takes a couple hours and is a major project and priority, the sketchbook thing can be as little as 5 minutes a day. But just drawing everyday because you think you have to to improve is nonsense for sure. First of all, to improve you need a specific idea of what you want to improve - hands? feet? more accurate perspective drawings? a looser and freer linework style? - and an idea for how to improve that so you're being methodical with your time. Otherwise you could easily just spend time practising what you consider to be mistakes and end up getting worse instead of improving. And then there's the burnout factor as you all mentioned. I've heard of some art schools that insist on each student filling a 8.5x11" sketchbook every week... that seems insane to me, especially when you have all the classwork and assignments and probably a part-time job at the same time.

Yes for sure there are context where a daily habit for a specific project can help! Filling a sketchbook is a ridiculous expectation, I haven't finished 1 in years! -Prof Lieu

"Push it" might be used, when a student settles for the first, or most obvious approach or solution, but taking the conversation into more meaningful dialogue, i.e. "Is this already an overused concept, are there deeper ways to go, is this just a starting point?" can give them encouragement to push an idea further into fresh territory. As for drawing every day - at 72, after twenty years of non-art employment, I had many ideas stewing in my head, and yet when I began again, I've found it very hard to regain the facility I had before; accepting that art may be malleable, but drawing is a discipline, I've worked to draw, even if I don't feel like it. I mix projects with just sketching people or situations, and I find I cannot predict which thing may turn out more interesting, or better. Point being, my skills are improving to where my actual projects turn out better, and a habit of working even when uninspired is more valuable, than waiting for inspiration, only to falter with frustration as the techniques aren't up to the idea. Self-identifying as a craftsperson, not an "artiste," I find to be a more humbling, yet affirming role, regarding my purpose and priorities. I cannot be a commercial artist, where deadlines and assigned concepts are constants. But, I can self-assign, switch scale or medium or subject, and focused effort is cumulative; settling in to a mental state of relaxed, but heightened awareness, as I go about my task, becomes easier to get into each session. This by itself is confidence-building, and over time I see my work has improved, regardless of what specific emphasis was chosen each time. But, it is never a linear gain; some days just don't produce that way. My motto is "expect nothing, and I will never be disappointed." There's always some give and take; a quick sketch can preserve an idea while fresh. It's so interesting to see uncurated sketches by legendary artists, that look no more accurate or rendered than my own, a great way to get over being precious about everything. But on the other side, I too often see works by local artists that have some interesting ideas, but their drawing limitations clearly hold the work back. This can be a good motivator, to revisit basic skill practice, not like doing laps in a pool, but in service to more fully realizing a certain concept. If you have something more complex to communicate, beyond "pain" or "ugliness," developing a richer vocabulary, of materials and manipulations and compositions, is required. I never accepted crude drawing or painting as the requisite for "expressionistic" art; it mostly produces generic stereotypical "angst ridden" work, whereas we've evolved to sense the subtlest nuances of expression over thousands of years, even before humans developed language. I find relatively accurate portraits that capture some ambiguity while revealing a sense of a real personality, to be the rarest examples of actual "expressionism."

This is a great point-- I think all of these "overused" phrases and suggestions can be obnoxious, but they're all based on some valuable ideas. I feel as though people sometimes throw out suggestions like this in a very surface level way, "just because". It becomes cliche in it's own right, which is sort of ironic! - Mia, Art Prof Staff

I am my worst enemy. All this negative chatter going on in my head. Always comparing my work to others and feeling like I'm coming up short. Yet they compliment me on what I've created. Why don't I love myself and be kind to myself? Ugh! So often I work all day long and look forward to some art time just for me and I'm blank and exhausted. Why am I intimidated and feel unworthy of "good" supplies? When I'm playing around on crappy paper and trying out different things I actually find aspects that I like. Then I decide to break out the good stuff and recreate it and it totally blows. Stiff, stilted .... oh so cautious and this results in crap which then perpetuates how I perceive my art. I put my creativity on the back burner for about 45 years and now I am trying to hustle and catch up. Just venting.

I've taken my throw-away bloopers, strategically lay strips of ripped paper over areas, then "ruin" the exposed areas without fussing over anything or having a plan. If I was going to throw it away anyway, why not just darken (or if working in reverse...lighten) parts of it. When I remove the covered areas, I've found an exciting new drawing. Often they turn a bad start into something worthy of framing!

I fully agree with you. I really appreciate your attitude toward these bad teachings, and I think it is important that there are people like you who speak frankly what they think. People who love and want to make art need to open their eyes and learn to defend themselves from those who spread and feed thoughts that kill creativity and freedom to learn. The sad truth is that there are economic interests behind these prejudices, and the ones who pay the price are those people who are getting into art and end up in the clutches of these wafflers. Your battle is a breath of fresh air and helps people to love, study and practice art in full freedom. Thank you for your valuable work.

Interesting thing for me as an artist with references vs imagination, I can imagine a scene, but my human dummy forms in the mind place image don’t have faces, and in still life ideas I like to make collage pictures with my reference finds. I clips bits and pieces and make my final picture idea and then set about to drawing it. On the other hand I can be inspired by a few different things and then go about creating my own chubby adorable animal characters, mostly from my own imagination. I even attempted to get Dall-E to make me a reference image and it couldn’t even get close to what I ultimately wanted to design. I’m not overly worried about AI as I have been playing with it myself. It has useful features, but when it comes to creativity, it sucks.

When I think of "Try Harder" I prefer to change that to "what else" in my head to see if I have missed anything. My work is very detailed, so I go back to reviewing the elements and principles of art and see if any of them jump out at me when reviewing my progress on a piece. Then my next steps appear more obvious because I have an internal standard for what more is needed. I hop around the piece as I work, so I have to return to look for bits I have overlooked, which right now is looking to improve value and crisping up my linework. It is becoming more habitual, and I expect my focus to turn to other elements and principles in future efforts.

To be honest, while not necessarily good mentally sometimes it’s not wholly ineffective in your art. Lots can be learnt by realism because you have to make an illusion to create reality and that makes you delve into a lot of abstraction. As for the drawing every day I mean listen it helps, but I understand people who might not be in the situation or privilege to do so so really it’s more of an ego thing some people have that bothers me. I mean tbh, I think you can also go from abstract to realism without much struggle because you’re just appropriating and reappropriating the rules of art, as pertains to your own self expression. But that’s just my two cents, I respect if you disagree.

“Push it”. I have never been told this. It is vague. I thought it meant to push the boundaries “Draw every day”. I can kind of see how this might be good advise, kind of like honing your skill, like a musician practicing their instrument every day, but I don’t think you should do it if it is not enjoyable. I don’t sketch very often at all, but I do create art studies digitally quite often. It's kind of like sketching, I guess. I do it because I really enjoy it, though. I might actually enjoy this process more than actually creating the art. “An artist must suffer”. I thought this was just a matter of fact, not some advice. It might be something all creatives do at times. I’m thinking of stuff like artist block, questioning if your art is good, questioning if your art is finished, or being afraid that you might ruin a piece by making a change to it. Suffering is something you should try to avoid. “You have to have realistic drawing skills…” Just not true unless realism is what you are going for… and maybe not even then. If you are doing figurative art, it might depend on the individual artist and the art they are doing. I can see how some practice honing figurative art skills might be beneficial to some. A lot of art is not even representational. Many well known abstract and non-representational artists have said they were not good at drawing, Larry Poons is one example. “Any art class or tutorial will help” is probably not true, but there are some art classes that can be absolutely transformative. I’m thinking of the series of beginning drawing classes I had in college that taught me to loosen up, and see outside the box… A complete series of art History classes was also very beneficial.

I think art advice is effective or ineffective depending on wether it is ego driven or driven by deeper, more inner and genuine feelings that underlying your very being and sort of create an artwork almost as a sigil, symbol or testament to that consciousness. Perfection and suffering go hand in hand and that’s because they’re vain pursuits; they are pure desire itself, thirsty for infinity. And yet that is absurd, as just working from honesty and truth to yourself just brings a quality of work that speaks. It’s a question you ask, sometimes a prayer, not an answer. You awaken.

Emotional turmoil & big events like that trigger creative energy, I find-- it seems so bizarre, but some of the most powerful pieces stem from heartache. It's a great way to sort through your feelings! - Mia, Art Prof Staff

Art teachers can be such hypocrites!!! It's so frustrating. I'm so sorry to hear about what your dad said-- believe me, the art industry is alive and well! - Mia, Art Prof Staff

When I was 38 (im a woman), visited my dad with my close friend, 61. She was a long-time renowned TV writer. Her characters were women who were brought into TV shows not as only cutesy wives/moms (typical in the olden TV days). She wrote them as strong, both inside and outside the house. He said to her, "I have got to apologize to my daughter here....i never ever thought artistry could do anything for her, because she was a girl. She shoulda been a secretary. " He turned, hugged me, and apologized....sincerely. She had hired me as, once again, guess what....a visual artist. And YOU all inspire me to inspire others!

I don’t draw every day but really if I don’t for a couple of days I really want to find the time and scratch that urge. It has become addictive!

A really like the women’s head in the mouth of the alligator. It’s cool because I am a fan of the Florida Gators! Go Gators! It could use a little more blood though.
