I took the time to actually sit down back in the day and learn all the angles and get a feel for the amount of swing and I finally got it. Once you do this, this game is incredibly fun. It's not a horrible game, it just takes some time and practice to master, but once you do it's quite satisfying.

If only I had the patience (and actually read the manual) when I was younger would have appreciated this game so much more. To think of the hours I spent watching the screens when I played golf on the Commodore 64 🤦

I started with NES golf, released 4 years after this. Quite a difference a few years makes in tech. Loved that game as a kid!

It’s funny to think how much fun we had with golf of all things. There was one on the Commodore 64 I played a lot.

Very nice! Good to see you enjoy this. For me, this never quite worked, as I was not good enough to figure out how to position the player sprite when I was younger. Even now I have some problems with that 😅, so I guess I need more practice. But as you said, for an early game, this is actually quite impressive for what content they put in there. Cheers!

Looking again it was only a 2k cart. Pretty impressive. I also never really have this one the time of day when I was younger. But when I got a Flashback a few years ago I gave it an honest try and that’s when I realized how much I liked it.

I got my first game console in 1982 and it was an Intellivison and it's sports games were like Neo Geo to NES in gameplay and graphics. I did get an Atari in 1983 and I loved it for its arcade style games. Mattel's PGA Golf was light years ahead of Atari golf. Intellivision got the GOAT Golf game in 1987 called Chip Shot which was even better than NES Golf. Atari Golf felt more like an advanced Pong Game.

"it's sports games were like Neo Geo to NES in gameplay and graphics"-- wtf do you think the Neo Geo is exactly? Your Intellivision definitely did not have Neo Geo quality graphics, dude, lmao

I’ll have to check out Chip Shot. Gotta get my Intellivision working too, heheh. And you are absolutely right, the way it bounces of trees and the edge of the course (depending on difficulty) it is like a variation of Pong.

I’m pretty sure he’s just comparing the advancements between the older systems. He’s not saying the Intellivision is capable of running an arcade perfect version of Samurai Showdown.

I never saw Atari Golf before. I was expecting something really bad, but this actually looks like a fun game, and I don't even like golf. Bad graphics? It's a golf course; it doesn't need good graphics. No music? If you want music out on the golf course, you bring your own. Bloopy sounds? Yeah, they could have done a bit of white noise whoosh for the swing instead of what they did, but that's not all that big a deal.

It’s definitely much better than my childhood brain remembered.

Feels like you're winding up for a huge drive on the putting green. I've discovered that for quite a few basic Atari games that I considered "bad", that I in fact just did not know how to play them.
@CoachTroyRetro2 ай бұрын
Absolutely. The Manuals section on AtariAge has been one of the most useful online resources for me. Even if I think I know the game I’ll read up and find something new.

I love Atari Golf! Sure, the graphics are primitive, but there's fun strategy involved in getting under par. I've spent hours on this game!
@CoachTroyRetro2 ай бұрын
I’ve never recorded my scores but I’m pretty sure I never got under par for the whole course. That’s gotta be tough but doable if you memorize the course well enough.

its 20 years later, i still dont know how to control it.

🤣 yeah it’s not the most intuitive. But after a lil bit you get the hang of it.

Agreed again, truly awful game even considering its age. There were some decent sports games at the time, such as HomeRun, this is not one of them
@CoachTroyRetro2 ай бұрын
I don’t know, I think I like this one better than home run. Though the ridiculousness of controlling the three fielders is fun.
