The crime here is counting the basket! I don't really agree with the tech, but it is justifiable within the rules. Counting a basket that didn't go in, and was shot when the play was dead... that's insane!

Marat (#32 lame-o ref that didn't hear the loud-ass whistle seconds before for some reason... thanks Jomboy for the ID) called bench interference on the Cavs, thinking that the play was still active. By rule, the shot counts, even it had been an air ball. The technical free throw was most likely tacked on by the interference.

Bench interference is similar to goaltending. The missed shot would have counted IF it was actually during play. (The refs messed this one up bad though. There shouldn’t have been any call since it was clearly a dead ball and the bench obviously can’t interfere with play when they aren’t even playing…)

Yes, the ruling would be correct if the ball was live. The way I see it, there's two egregious errors. One was the interference call when the ball was dead. The second was when the three officials conferred after the play discussed in detail what they all saw, but none of them thought it was important _when_ they saw what they saw. The ref who blew the whistle asked the one who made the interference call what he called and why, and just assumed that everything he told him took place before the whistle, without bothering to clarify that it happened while the ball was still live.
