Worst Commission Experiences | Artist Reacts + Timelapse

Responding to some comments on my Twitter post “Artists, what’s the worst experience you’ve had when selling your art?” (+ a timelapse for one of the recent commissions I’ve finished). I enjoyed making this video, and would love to react to the rest of the post comments sometime ^^

Here is something I have noticed in my 14 years on DA; Requests from such people are a power trip; it gives the requestor a sense of control over a person (in this case, the artist and the art). I've seen the requestor ask for lots of "what if" corrections on finished art. I've seen the drama over adoptables. I've seen the "Is it done now?" comments. I've seen the "please and why not" pleas, the "I have autism" ploy, the "so I can get off too", the "can I have a gift" comments. I've even been demanded to draw. It's all about controlling the artist and the image, it's all about control. Because of this I no longer accept any requests; free, trade or paid.

I’m sorry to hear you’ve had such horrid experiences with owed art, people certainly can be entitled...even when they’re getting something for free

It's sad, but these situations are what puts me off of doing comms as a fellow artist. I've had someone force refund money for a comm once and I was naïve enough to not open a suite against them. Really frusterating.

Here’s the thing. I want to take some of these people aside and say, “you want to SUE and, in front of court and in front of god, inadvertently admit that you SCAMMED A F U R R Y ARTIST for a commission?!”

I had someone ask for commission and ghost me, they didnt even told me what they wanted or payed. i felt so bad at the time but rn i look back and im annoyed, why did they even bother .-.

I'm sorry to hear that, I've had people do that to me too, I understand people change their minds about ordering commissions sometimes, but it'd be better if they just said that rather than ghosting ;;

I sold full-bodies for 200 points for 2 years and the only ppl that told me I was underpricing were my friends and I didn’t believe them. I got Twitter and now my feelings are getting hurt bc I’m realizing how many people took advantage of me :’) For context my fb’s take 2 hours and I’ve had ppl tell me they’re worth around 15-20$ and it’s just mmm. It’s painful

The points system has led to so many artists being taken advantage of smh Personally I don't think any artist should work for less than $10 an hour, so definitely, if your fullbodies take 2 hours, $20 is the minimum you should charge in my opinion

Ugh .. these sound disgustingly painful to deal with. I want to start commissions, and I know how stressful it can be .. but oh my gosh. It would really help if I just could make a style that I enjoy before I ever open to commissions though. But after hearing some of these- jeez ..

Don't let these stories put you off, in my experience, most people who buy commissions are decent people, but (like with everything) you do eventually run into the odd person who isn't unfortunately

Okay but can we discuss the sad fact that people also frequently don't tip artists? Maybe this is just dumb on my half but I was raised being told that anything that is labor or skill based deserves tips. Even if the prices are fair. ESPECIALLY for non essential and luxury products. I've had artists send me back the tip even after I've told them it's for them and intentional????? Like I totally understand and make exceptions for people who are low on funds to begin with and are getting comms as a pick-me-up. I also can see and understand not tipping when y'all are friends and regularly comm each other/gift each other things, trade, etc. Like 100% don't get me wrong, not everyone can or needs to tip. But it does gross me out that it's not generally considered standard and I completely understand that not everyone feels that way BUT that's just a personal pet peeves of mine. I do completely respect other people's opinions and experiances too though!!!

I tried so hard to write this in a way that makes sure people don't feel bad for not tipping. To be CLEAR I'm not mad at people for not tipping, I'm just annoyed that it's not like standard/expected/so essential that its treated like part of the price before you ever order, in the same sense that it would be if you sayyyy.. Walked into a paint store and ordered a custom piece that way. I blame the devaluation of digital art for this one.

It grosses me out that tipping should be considered standard for anything :) That it even exists in some countries for some professions is insane. Nobody should rely on tips for anything, especially not to compensate for an unfair salary. Additionaly, nobody should expect tips simply for doing their job right. That is their job. I would add an exception to people who go above and beyond. Because their efforts and time has value to me. The only times I tip artists is if I buy something and they send me much more than expected/add features/details etc or if I find their prices to be ridiculously low from the get go. In which case, my tip is my way of saying: "you sold yourself short, look, people WILL spend more!". If you tip an artist just like that, you are either implying that they cannot set proper prices for themselves, or that you are surprised they didn't send you crappy art. At least, that is MY opinion.

No one should be tipping anyone to be honest. people can’t afford to tip and pay for the food or art or whatever they are buying, as well.

Quick note about chargebacks: it works a whole lot differently than getting a refund. It will take an additional fee from the artist. So basically you are taking more out of their account than you payed. Some people think that its no big deal when you do a chargeback when you want to be refunded before an artist starts working, but thats a biggest reason why chargebacks put people in dept. People arent immediately using the money as soon as its in the account... Only use chargebacks if you are being scammed and make sure the artist even allows refunds.

I think I usually compliment your characters/anatomy so ill talk about the background this time; I LOVE how you drew the sky, the clouds look so wonderful! and the water is jus * chefs kiss *, beautiful colorz and the rocks are like rocks! thats pretty hard to do, in my experience anyway lol- since you drew the "idea" for the background id been excited for the fire, and I was absolutely not disappointed! and the sand looks so soft!! i want to go on a beach now sorry if my comment is really long, :'D

So a long time ago I was commissioned to make a furry head. I LOVED this head... But everytime I sent an update to the buyer I would get a reply like, "It's alright." I would ask them if there was anything that needed changing and occasionally they would have a small thing here or there but nothing crazy. Anyway, I eventually finish the head and present a ton of photos to the client. "Oh ok" was their response. I was only charging $150 for the head and I had grown quite fond of it. So I told them that I would be happy to refund the commission if they didn't like it... Well they panicked and started telling me how much they loved it and really wanted it. Which surprised me haha! Although as soon as they got the head they contacted me to tell me everything they didn't like about it 😅. I actually stopped doing furry heads after that because I felt so insecure about them. It's been a long time and I think that client was just trying to help me. I should give it ago again.

I’m sorry to hear that! That’s ridiculous they didn’t just tell you what they wanted changing; but you should def give it a go again if it’s something you enjoyed! ^^

My worst experience was some one messaged me and said take my money and I’m like ok what are u wanting they said 6 headshots then I told them the price for 6 flat color headshots 18$ and that I would need at least half payment before the art so that I don’t finish it and they don’t pay and they just left me on read

I've always wanted to have the ,oxidation to do commissions and probably will when I'm old enough to get my own PayPal account an learn some more stuff about it although I do requests from time to time I'm always kinda nervous because something like this might happen. I always still try to do commissions with people I know in real life though sometimes only with friends mostly. So I'm still trying TvT. Also I live your art so much!

Don't let these stories put you off taking commissions in the future if that's something you want to do; you will get the odd commissioner who's problematic but the majority aren't like that ^^ Thank you!

When this video was made I think I was using the technical pen mostly, currently I use the dry ink brush for most things (and the soft airbrush for gradients)
