@@CN86443 oh for sure. I had a co-worker turned best friend that had a pit he got when he wasn't doing the best in life. He wasn't very nice to her early on. Yelling about her at everything. But later on, dog was about 10, he had cleaned up his life, his kid treated that dog like a friggin horse. Jumping on her, grabbing her cheeks/mouth/ears/tail. She would put up with it every time. Didn't even try to walk away. Super sweet girl who loved people but was very aware of their conduct. Always thought it was funny if we'd go to the park or having a barbeque and someone had their puppy with them and if that puppy jumped on any kid, even at 15 years old she'd run over and just body puppies for jumping on kids. And my buddy will swear, all I ever told her was she couldn't be on the bed or couch.

@@CN86443 Back in 2015 I ended up in possession of an almost 10 year old American Staffordshire Terrier that had been through something like 5-7 terrible owners, no training, lots of abandonment. She was super sweet with people surprisingly. Only problem I ever had with her and other dogs is because she was so short she would just walk under dogs and sort of bull horn toss them around trying to sniff them. Another tip in choosing a dog: spend some time with the dog before buying it. It gives you both the chance to learn about each other's unique behaviors and change some expectations. Preferably, visit the dog several times, so that a bond can form before dog moves in, so that the dog can rely on the bond for comfort and direction until new home feels familiar.

We had a border collie and black lab mix who did the same. She was such a sweetheart, and loved kids, especially toddlers. She'd lay down in the middle of the play area so the babies would come and crawl all over her. We were so lucky with her temperament, and we knew it. Unfortunately, she was the first of two lab mixes we lost to surprise untreatable health issues. I was just telling a friend earlier that people need to research dogs before purchasing them as they’re often purchased on popularity or aesthetics. If you read or do research about Akita’s you will learn that they need to be trained early as possible due to their dominant alpha personalities. Also they are predatory dogs and you have to be careful with them around small animals and children. I once wanted one, but haven’t gotten it because I’m not ready.
@jeepmanxj
@jeepmanxj Жыл бұрын
You need to do more research. Dogs are not wolves. Dogs recognize humans are not dogs and do not treat humans as a dominat or submissive. Fun fact on that. The scientist that came up with dominance theory has spent every minute since he published the first paper refuting it. As in. It's fake and wolves don't even use dominance alpha theory. Akitas are high energy dogs and they need high energy outlets. They are also extremely intelligent so they need engaging high energy outlets.

@@jeepmanxj It’s misleading that the paper is valid, but only for unrelated wolves kept in captive enclosures. @@jeepmanxj Also, the research shows that the temperament differences between breeds is almost nonexistent. Intelligence, aggression, and such are not strongly correlated to breeds (with the exception of aggression and small breeds of dog and there’s debate about what the cause of that is; basic if it’s people let them and even encourage aggression as they think it’s cute or if it’s actually a consequence of breeding them for extremely small sizes, we just don’t know).

A coworker( I dont do training as a job that way its not work its fun) told me she wanted to get an irish setter. " they are so pretty,i seen one as a kid and fell in love with them." Told her talk to a few breeders first,they are hunting dogs,bird dogs they need a job,you live in an apartment, pupper will destroy that place in a heart beat when he gets bored. @@michellerocco4932 I also train (and breed as well) dogs and that’s true, to an extent. For example, I breed Dalmatians which are normally a pretty easy going breed (regardless of what this guy says, the empirical evidence suggests they aren’t particularly aggressive or bite prone. Despite being around the 40th most popular breed in Canada they haven’t sent anyone to hospital in 40 years and C-BARQ shows they are less aggressive than others in their breed group), but they are pretty high energy lol. However, a few of my bitches are not, they are in fact quite lazy and their offspring also tends to be quite lazy. I have to encourage them to run and do their athletics (I show them in agility and other canine sports). More important than questions about the breed is questions about the breeder’s specific line.

My neighbour got a Border Collie - same thinking that this is going to be easy. Guess what - dog is a complete workaholic, each day owner needs to drop him off to the herding job around 5 am, then he goes to work, after he's done he is getting a dog from herding. That was the only option to keep the dog stable and non-destructive. Now it's amazing, but in other household (in which people would not be that dedicated to the dog) he would be unhappy or end up in the shelter. But yeah, Collie breed is a huge lottery for me. Akita IMO big 'no-no' due to the fact that those are ancient dogs - if you have experience with stubborn and independent dogs, go for it, but i wouldn't pick as a 1st time owner.
@fighterpimp
@fighterpimp 8 ай бұрын
This is not the only option. Your neighbor could of just spent the needed time with the dog. But instead opt'd to train them for herding. There is nothing wrong with that. But it isn't the only way. Everyone says these collies so crazy and destructive. No more then the Rots I have owned and yet are just as easy to train. 100% eyes on at start for 1 year. After 1 year. Give them free range, because you trained them now. I never have in issue doing this. What most people do is this. O hey dog I love you pat pat pat pat pat. Here some food and water...... Time go outside. Open door, dog goes out, shut door.... Dog alone outside........ Of course this border collie is going to destroy everything..... You left it alone...........
@rawrpancake
@rawrpancake 8 ай бұрын
@fighterpimp Unfortunately that was not a case, guy is a really active and it was not his first Collie - he simply got a workaholic dog. I am not saying, that Collies are crazy - those are working dogs after all with a higher level of needs/energy and need of purpose - if you will not be able to fulfill this, dog will be unhappy. Sometimes it may require commitment like simply driving your dog to the herding dog, cause he loves it😁. Yes, there are other factors like how the diet looks like, but it may not be enough to "slow the dog down". I will stick to the thought, that suggesting Collies as 1st dog is not the best idea.
@fighterpimp
@fighterpimp 8 ай бұрын
Then how come I can break that habit out of every single dog no problem.................. It clearly is a trainer issue not the dog. He thinks 1 type of training fits every dog. That dog needed a different type of training that your neighbor did not know how to accomplish. Like I stated. There is other options. He just didn't pick them. So he choose to make it actually worse. How is it worse now. Because he trained the dog by working it out super hardcore with herding. Now they dog has to herd. He could of broke it out in a different tech, but choose to pick that one. No issues with it, but you act like there isn't other options. People like you are trash to talk to. They are all little high-strung mean-spirited knife wielding goblins. People just don't think micro breeds like that need training or leadership. Worst part is when one of these things goes off in a kid's face, they usually just blame the dog. In my opinion, kids need to be trained first before getting a family dog. Then train the dog too.

I had two Akitas grow up with my toddlers, I understand they are difficult, I got them at 8 weeks old, spent so much time with them, established all the boundaries, they are wonderful dogs but require a strong leader in thier life. I've seen the bad side as well, with Anita's particularly.

Thank you! It has always been a dream of ours to have a dog, but our first experience with adoption was an incredibly sad one. We made it clear that we were looking for a dog that liked children and they thought that an akita (mix?) was a good choice for us. Long story short: we liked the dog, she was friendly to us - but she had terrible aggression to children out of fear. We couldn't keep her because it was just too much. I still feel bad for failing that dog, even though the shelter should have been more careful. You can't help but feel responsible.

My parents actually bought a dog with almost zero experience and almost zero research, I was only 10 or 9 so I didn't really understand why this is so important and it ended up that no one could fulfill her needs, as she was a Swedish Wallhund. She wanted to chase cars and we live in the countryside so we had her of leash a lot. This led to her not being properly trained and eventually ran after a car and got run over. She was only 5 months old. It was very sad but I learned so much. I still love dogs to this day and I'm driven by not letting a dog fall into the cracks like that.

I used to have a lab-collie mix dog (we got her from one of my dad’s coworkers, because the apartment/loft she was at didn’t allow dogs/pets) and she was never around kids before, so that instinct of herding us snapped into her pretty quickly, especially since when we got her, me and my siblings were pretty young. She would even try to drag us out by our arms whenever we swam in the pool, most likely thought that we were drowning and tried to “save” us. 😅 She was a good girl💗,she lived to 9!

Same here! I have 3 year old male, who showed a lot of aggression when young but with a lot off training a being a very firm owner. He is now lovely with my 2 year of sibling who step on his tail accidentally and 6 year old who can be a little harping with him. At most he’ll make a groan and get and move to another place. Must agree though it is taking a lot to socialise him with other dogs, especially male. He can be fine for weeks then one day not matter the size of the dog that dog (and it is always them) with bark or growl at him me will react in kind and we are 3 steps back again for weeks ! But if you are a strong consistent owner who is confidence in life yourself and so the dog will see your lack of fear of other dogs and you don’t take any crap from your little trouble maker when they are young they are smart dogs that will communicate in many ways and respect can be earned from them and then they will listen! A lot of work but wouldn’t swap him for the world. But for anyone considering getting one because look cool, you better have a lot of experience with dogs, enough time to put the work in with the understanding patience is what is required and most probably be aware most hate to be left alone. They may be quiet most of the time but not when alone !

I have a 4yo Akita/husky mix rescue and she's good with other dogs but I've had to be pretty firm with her in socializing situations. I know quite a few other Akita owners that haven't had any luck socializing other dogs. If she sees that I'm calm and stand between her and the other dog for a while she understands the situation and her excitement calms down after a few minutes. She loves little kids but again I have to defuse the excitement before otherwise she'll get over excited and end up barreling down people/kids. She's very gentle with my own small children

My experience with Dalmatians (not mine; years ago when I had Boxer girl and 2 kids) was really shocking. Before I met those 2 male Dalmatians; I thought that they are loving, nice, 'spotty', mellow beautties... After those 2; spotty and beautty left. Other parts went through changing opinion. At that time, without furder reading, my opinion was that this 2 are spetial due to lack of proper training and seting boundaries. To day, I think that, after 2 crazy Dogo argentino's maybe I will be able to raise Dalmatian😄

From my experience its cap on the collies. Ive know 3 collies from being a baby. None of the ever touch me in any harmful way. The first one i knew (Zack) apparently spent his time guarding me whilst i slept and apparently even pierced another dogs ear when they tried to come at me. The second (Domino) ive had since i was 5. Neither dog has ever caused me any harm, no matter how much I probably annoyed them, from my experience they are beautiful dogs who just want to be loved, fed and run. As an avid owner of two beautiful cow dogs I have to tell you if you insist on owning cow dogs and having children at the same time you will be training your children more than you will be training your cow dogs I have a Idaho shag and a mini Aussie, Blue heeler mix . Both are fabulous dogs and both are fabulous with the children that took some special training in and of itself. But when I tell you I had to train my children more than I had to train my dogs I am not joking and I still have to remind them of certain little things like staying out of their face or paying attention to when the dog it's getting ready to go into work mode. But the positive of owning cow dogs and having having children at the same time is if you don't necessarily have a ranch or any cattle for them to work up or the border collie's case sheep young children can be very helpful in redirecting that energy like playing tug of war and throwing balls one of my children love to tie ropes to the back of their RC and running around the backyard as my dogs chase it and they all have a grand time.

As they get older and when you go on forest walks from my experience when your son is being a boy and running of getting muddy that's when the negative herding starts because the herding mindset of dogs is that now the sheep has ran away and needs to be with shepherd or you that's what the dog starts thinking which is when you see issues

My first answer is “any small, hyper and/or reactive dog”. People woefully underestimate how much training and socialization they need not to mention the amount of damage they can do. I used to make deliveries and it was almost always the tiny dogs that were an actual danger. I grew up with large working breed dogs and am not intimidated easily by a dog but I always try my best not to cause any stress to them and that avoids ~95% of touchy situations. I used to train dogs for local rescues to make them more adoptable so reading canine body language is super important.
