Once at an open mike I watched a guitarist do a screaming shred-fest over "all along the watchtower" only to be told afterwards that the rest of the band had retuned back to standard tuning after they had tuned down a full step at practice and he apparently had not remembered to do so. Played through the whole lead guitar showcase of 10 minute solo without realizing nearly every note was garbage. Some people just don't have ears for it

erad5 Pretty much. They had all just started taking lessons, and figured a "Live on the Lawn" event at a local music store was the perfect place to show off their newly acquired "skills". Sad story, that store is no longer open. The owner didn't know shit about running a business, and his wife had a bad habit of taking money from the register to get her hair and nails done, so any hired help they had running that trainwreck came out unpaid. They weren't even around when it tanked, they made up some BS about needing to be out of state for something and everything from inside that was tossed out on the street was taken by neighbors or people who would actually appreciate and take care of it.

Probably like these bands , we rehearsed once and I think we spent that time just getting drunk and not playing. Well anyways we sucked so bad we could have easily been on one of these compilations, but at least I realized how bad we were and I vowed to never do that again. Well it ended up happening with another band years later but for the most part we actually practice before we go out

What really sucks is when the person who fucks up rips on you for doing fine. I was in a band for a live gig. The rhythm guitarist/singer wanted to do a song we'd not planned on doing, rehearsed once, months earlier, never really had, but he really wanted to do it. Sure. So, I joked aloud - I don't remember the chords, but I'll follow. It was one of our best songs of the night. The lead guitarist didn't remember it either, never sure when to solo. It was just the three of us. I was on bass and playing a heavy rhythm to keep the beat. The audience was clapping along. The irony - the singer had totally messed up. He'd skipped a solo, forgot a chorus, restarted a verse, and didn't know how to end it. Afterwards he ripped me a new one and how maybe I should have sheet music. Yeah, I got the song fine and kept up with him. The lead guitarist held back playing a few times as he was totally lost. But, yeah, blame me.

I used to tell my students - "You don't play guitar with your fingers - you play guitar with your EARS." These people have no ears - they lack the metacognitive ability to realize that they're bad, i.e. they don't know that they don't know. The first guitar player, for example, has arguably plenty of "technical ability" (sweep picking for example), but absolutely NO TONALITY WHATSOEVER

Maiden Head That's not the point Maiden, so yeah he has the general skills to play songs that were made by someone else but if he has the eventual want-to to make his own music, then it takes an EAR for music as they say. And even when listening to Heavy Metal or thrash metal you can hear a melody in the guitars, in hearing him play that "solo" I didn't hear anything except noise. It's one thing to say your music is good, but its another thing to hear it from someone else.

The fact is that those "worst" guitar solo are really hard to play for most so its just horrible in sound but to play must be absolutely terrorical

The dude at number three just seemed like he had just started playing and he made a band with his friends... the only thing he needs is a few lessons... the vocalist on the other hand... yikes. As for the number two spot... everyone in the audience through up their hands and said "Never mind!"

With the exception of # 5, all these guys are über-amateurs and/or beginner guitarists who clearly don't practice in any remotely disciplined fashion. However, #5 is 'a pro' and should know his 'thing' must be labeled 'Harmonically&Melodically-Chaotic-Free-Metal-Shred' -BTW, guys in Slayer played quite a bit like that. #4 has no concept of scales, keys, let alone phrasing...#3, the Floyd cover band; for what is worth, the singer and especially the bassist are equally bad and co-responsible for that catastrophic event. And Lil Wayne was at least playing more or less on the beat, in time.
