Yep! Mine didn't even last a week, lesson learnt at a young age... I was happy with my BK2 till i removed the scales & found it skeletonized WTF! I wouldn't have purchased it, if i had of known, nice way to make a tough knife weak imho...

There is a video of a guy breaking his, albeit he was hammering on it. So instead I purchased the Ontario 1/4" 5160 steel RD6 and RD Tanto. I got them from TKC and not Made in China, invested in China Amazon. Paid a little bit more but happy to support those guys. The Ontario RD6 and RD Tanto have solid handles with no material cut out of that 5160. They are pretty indestructible and I now pair them with a good 'ole Buck 110 drop point. The ease of sharpening that BOS 420HC and Ontario's 5160 in the field is why. Spent too much on collecting 'super steel' knives over the years which was pointless.

Most people that beef on 8cr steel are the ones that spend hundreds of dollars on s110v steel and they don't even use their pocket knives. Flicking it open, cutting paper and closing it does not count as using it.

CRKT OFFICIAL: The problem is that at the prices you charge for knives made with 8Cr they are not a good value. In fact none of the steels you listed are particularly expensive, I understand from a business standpoint that you use these steels to maximize your profits but despite some great designs I just can’t bring myself to purchase them. A good example is the Clever Girl, I’m just not going to pay $80 at the lowest price I can find on the Internet for what is basically 1080 steel. Given the high quality of knives with better steel coming out of the manufacturers in China some of which I suspect are OEM suppliers for your company and other American-based knife companies makes it hard to spend my money on your brand.

Dude you're preaching to the choir. I keep trying tell people when they break out the steel snobbery text book on me, that the same steel can vary from on heat treatment to another. Everyone wants to whip their super steel out and wave it around, but I can pretty much guarantee that I heat treated the 154CM in the knife I have on my side better and more consistently than their mass produced, mass heat treated M390 blade. 99.999% of people talking shit about steel online have never heard treated a blade in their entire life so to them it's just "It's this steel so it's definitely going to perform this way."

Charleston is correct. If you sweat....you're screwed out there. When you're sitting around a campfire or in a sleeping bag you're OK.... Plus you don't have to carry a ton of stuff..... A base layer, fleece, and down puffy jacket will get you through most anything in the lower 48.

Meinungs Freiheit Its fine enough. 420 is soft but 420hc has a higher carbon content and is tougher. Its easy to sharpen and lasts long enough if you arent required to use it rough the entire day. Id take 420hc over cheap chinese knives with mystery 440 Plus its so easy to sharpen all you have to do is take a field sharpener with you to keep it sharp.

It's legit Most of theD2 is legit too. Only bad thing you can say about most of them is the grind is terrible and maybe the heat treat is off. Can never know for sure tho about the heat treat

@@ericmiller254 ganzo isn't what im referring to. They list their steel as 440c anyway. Im talking about noname knives with "440" stamped on the blade. Most of the time they are 440A or 440B. Or hell even no name knives marked with 440c d2 154cm s35vn they can all be fake. That's why a reliable company is key. The steel is honestly the least of the worries. If it's not heat treated right it's garbage regardless of the "impressive" steel. That's why I was saying a proper 420hc can go a long way in the budget department if it's done right and has a good long reputation. Eafengrow for example is one such shady company that's all over Amazon listed as different high quality steels and many are actually just Chinese steels stamped with lies. It's just a buyer beware market and lots of research needs to be done before buying from questionable brands. Ganzo is an actual company and I own some of their knives. I'm a fan though I'm disappointed with so many designs having a non reversible pocket clip

I hate the word cheap because has the connotation that everything low cost is garbage, that won't do the job. You could use the same word for 429HC that Buck uses and guys have been using that steel in the woods for years. yes I know Buck has a great heat treat process but that does not mean others don't. The guy that developed the process has his own company and markets his services. In fact 8cr is slightly higher in carbon than 429hc they are about the same in Chromium , both will take a hardness at similar levels. I am an older guy from a time we held a buck knife in high esteem to have in the hunting camp, Yes the new alloys are wonderful, do you want them? yes, Do you need them? no. will you really notice much difference maybe in edge holding But then that $499.99 dollar blade may sit at home in the collection while you take your 429HC or 8cr steel knife and use the hell out of it.

Great comment. It’s literally all marketing 8cr is a great working steel for the money and I think they know that so they try to talk down about it so that people will think it’s junk and want to buy something more “premium” that’s what I’ve observed. I have a crkt squid that I’ve carried for a year and I used it for everything from cutting open bags of mulch, thick plastic packaging, foam, garden hose and my dad even used it to cut out a root that was in the way of a project. After a year of constant use it still shaved hair, and I haven’t properly sharped it once all I did was strop it every once in a while and touched it up a couple times on a field sharp ceramic hone.

For example attempting to "chop" something with a cheap 420steel knife the knife blade then shatters and a fingernail sized piece penetrates one of your eyes, and thus distracted by that injury you walk off of a cliff and DIE from injuries sustained in the subsequent fall....

8Cr13MoV is actually not that bad.. That 420J2 shit that CRKT also uses is the worst.. .2-.3% carbon means it's basically just stainless mild steel.. At least the 8Cr13MoV has .8% carbon and is hardenable. It has to be heat treated correctly, but done well, can be very decent..

That's not how hardenablility works. Carbon isn't the sole material that attributes to a steel's maximum reachable hardness. Take 3Cr13MoV. It only has 0.3ish% carbon but it also has 13% chromium which is also a contributing factor to hardness along side Vanadium which is a carbide former. If you heat treat that steel PROPERLY you can get it to act almost like stainless 5061 in large cutting tools. It won't have the fatigue life of a true spring steel but that's a different attribute for and entirely different application. I have video somewhere of me testing one of the original SCHMBS prototypes by bending it past 45° and it returning to true. You can't do that with mild steel.

Great video. I have hiked, camped and backpacked for over 35 years and I am a believer in fixed blades made of A2, 01 and D2 tool steels. At times I had to use these knives much harder than I have wanted to. They have always performed past my expectations. These knives have a convex edge and when it starts to dull, strop it and it is back to hair shaving sharp. The brands are a Randall in 01, Bark River in A2. In tools I have always saved up for the best quality I can get. It will be the least costly in the long run and provide the most enjoyment. Keep up the great videos and happy camping. Barry Levitt

I have a 7cr13 knife as a daily pocket knife. It's not my high carbon bushcrafting knife, but I get weird looks when I carry my badass woodsmans knife lol. The benefits of low carbon steel (as I'm sure you know) are many! corrosion resistance, cost efficiency, and it's easier to find things to sharpen your blades with (the bottom of ceramic plates, car windows, rocks, etc). It's also less taxing on your whetstones, files, or diamond plates (whatever you use to sharpen your gear in the field) It also allows you to refine your sharpening ability. If you have an inconsistent sharpening angle on your blade, you will be able to notice the loss of performance on a cut test. This allows the sharpener to correct the second bevel in a much quicker time, than super steel blades :) Best of luck brother God bless

Kind of a sidebar here: After a lifelong use of blade steel (60 years), owning and using a great many top makers products and making knives for myself and others...what I’m excited to see is the fairly recent acceptance of D2 into a widely available moderate cost blade steel. It used to be popular and considered a pretty high end steel but got pushed aside by the emergence of the crazy good powder steels. But more and more I see D2 offered as one of the basic steel choices by commercial makers. Even the Chinese knife community is selling really well made knives with properly treated D2. My only problem with D2 is that deep down I like A2 better. Bark River knows A2 well and do it right. Hmmm. Maybe I should cut back on the caffeine. This looks like a case of “Help me I’ve fallen and I can’t shut up.” 😆

I've got quite some experience over the years and I have to say that D2 is my absolute favorite. In my experience it even outperforms S35VN. S35VN or S30V might hold that fine razor edge a bit longer but once you go past that point these steels are pretty much dull because the edge rolls over while D2 just gets kinda rough and cuts even more aggressively. On my stainless blades I've got a lot more dull spots than on the ones with D2. Maybe CPM-D2 is even better but I haven't tried that one yet.

D2 makes a good blade steel but has very little latitude in heat treat in contrast to many other cutlery steels. Tight quality control is crucial to optimize this steel An issue with the plethora of cheap Chinese D2 is heat treating hundreds to thousands of blades simultaneously in large rooms reduces oversight ability. High variability of great to poor D2 of the same model knife is quite common with cheap Chinese blades. Budget priced blades stamped D2 is a game of hit or miss if the blade is a performer. However, higher tiered and more expensive Chinese brands do have good quality control. Main aspect, just because stamped D2, doesn't necessarily indicate a great performing blade.

That was a great video guys, definitely enjoyed it! I would take those tools on my first family camping trip of the year. I usually go out to one of the state parks here in Pennsylvania with my parents, sometimes my sister and brother-in-law, with cousins usually setting up camp as well. I spend the whole weekend playing with fire, so I would certainly make use of them.

Have to say that I’m sold on the value of s30v steel And it’s edge retention and ability to get sharpened to a razors edge every time. I’ll pay more for this steel every time and actually get what I pay for. Soft cheaper steels just aren’t worth it when it comes to keeping a shard edge after use and getting that razors edge when sharpening you blade. Great video!

I'd go with my fishing buddies for a multi-day fishing "trip"(not really a trip cuz we make camp at one spot and stay there for a few days) on the banks of Danube near Vidin. I can't believe people still believe 8Cr13MoV is bad... It's not S35VN that's for sure, but the steel can be surprisingly good if heat treated well, which a lot of companies actually do. You get quite a lot bang for you buck with 8Cr... and 440C(the ones form Boker and Sanrenmu are incredible).

most compaines heat treat 8cr, 440c etc really soft. im not sure what your smoking but CRKT and Kershaw budget steel is awful and heat treated poorly. its like that because they are low cost and have HUGE margins for making money on them. Boker and Sanrenmu are among the worst.

AFAIK, it's the Chinese version of AUS8 steel, which was pretty much the standard knife steel a decade ago (and I still have knives from a decade ago in AUS8). Shouldn't be too bad, unless you mess up something in the making of the knife.

harkonen1000000 Aus8 is Japanese and gets sharp but doesn't keep an edge worth a damn. It's better than 8cr13mov though. I'd avoid both in 2018. Any knife with these steels should only cost $20 max.

"Twinkie" steel legit saved my life once. All of my edc is cheap steel, because I would much rather lose or break something cheap, and I know that it works. I've found fancy steel with better edge retention doesn't really make much of a difference when you really need it.

The worst steel that isn't straight up pot metal is probably 2Cr13MoV, 3Cr13MoV, or 420J. 8Cr13MoV sucks, especially over $25 or so, but it's nowhere near the worst.

I have daily carried a blade with the 8Cr13MoV Steel for years. I use my knives for everything and somethings that knives should not be used for. Great razor sharp blade, lasting edge and sharpens fairly easy. The later is my only complaint. To get it great I have to work on it a bit more than I like. Those that criticize this steel are either very rich or statistic snobs and really don't have true experience. Is there better knives and steel, SURE. But a knife that will not fail you and you can afford to loose, it is worth buying this steel verses a Benchmade or other high quality knives. Do I have knives with high rated steel, YES, however, they tend to stay in the safe or on the shelf at home when I am out working and or playing.

Bryan Bunker Except you can get something like an Ontario Rat with really good steel, for like 30 bucks. 30 bucks is snob price to you? D2 isn't going to fail, and 30 bucks is hardly worth crying over. And with hard use it's the difference between having to sharpen every other day, or just running over a strop every other week. Unless you've only got like 5 bucks to your name and can only buy a knife at 7-11 there's no benefit to garbage steel.

Sebastian Fox I seen you around and I don't let people use my knives, so I really want to know how you can sit on a keyboard and tell me how my knives work and don't. I know various steels. For the price and performance, if you down this steel you are not experienced with hard working with knives and or you are elitist steel snob. I keep my knives sharp, they are tuned up once a year by a professional and then in between I maintenance them. I cut carpet, wood, paper, hunt and skin, camp and bushcraft etc with these EDC knives. They are used multiple times a day everyday. I am telling get you, because you aren't privileged to be in pocket or work beside me, that these knives are sharp for a long time and abused much more than most knives no matter what they are made of. Are they the best, NO. But they are not junk and by far not even close to be the worst steel. I do know that on several hunting trips and scout camps we have similar conversations and challenges. Guess what, every challenge I finish with my head up with pride. Benchmade and other quality steel knives excel but not enough to make me step away from my everyday knives. So attack and make blanket statements without experience to back it up. As someone said, steel is one thing, treatment is another. CRKT and Kershaw knives are the ones I use regularly. They are most of the time will shave you, without fussing over them all of the time. My point is you enjoy your approach and others enjoy theirs , don't be so snobbish but yours because you're willing and able to spend lots of money on each of your knives. Again, I have both but choose to carry and use the "worst steel knives " and never been let down.

Buahahaha, now that I call a smart move))) Of course 8cr has its application, its ok for outdoors, when you cut not so fibrous materials, like wood etc, but try to cut a lot of cardboard or rope with it. And for the crkt its a question of sales structure, if they want to adress steel snobs, who own more than 50 knives each and buy every new model they like its one thing, got to get better steels. Guess 80% of bladehq audience are steel snobs more or less. If they want to sell through wallmart its ok, no one will know anyway, if its stainless its ok))) The main question which part of the market is bigger, guess its major population, who knows about the knives that they can be sharp and dull and they cut groceries)))

Only gear queers care about steel that much. It's a knife.... Use it. sharpen it. Be practical for once. Spyderco tenacious is one of my favorite knives to carry.. I have a few. Even though its 8cr1mov steel (twinky steel??) I never sat there and been like " man this steel sucks" i have plenty of other knives way more expensive and "better quality" and I see no different besides the occasion " ooo you have a Griptilian!!". I guess this video is just some food for thought but don't let it scare you away. If you like a knife and feel good carrying it then do it.. even if it's 30 bucks.
